After criticism from the UK podcast industry, the BBC has said it won’t press ahead with ads in podcasts in the UK , saying that it has “decided to rule out placing adverts around BBC licence-fee funded programmes on third-party podcast platforms in the UK.” The announcement is expected to be confirmed in the BBC Annual Plan next week. Independent podcasters had called the idea “disastrous”. The BBC will still take some advertising in UK podcasts though; Podnews reported last week on a new BBC podcast which will contain ads inside the UK, but is not produced by the public service. The BBC is funded by advertising outside the UK. Exclusive: Frequency Ads has launched a new Premium Publisher Network for host-read ads. Partnering with DAX US, the service aims to make host-read ads as easy to buy as programmatic ads. Spotify Partner Program expands into Europe 4:22

From Apr 29, eligible audio and video creators in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Ireland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and New Zealand can enroll. This means more money for existing partners, too: we’re told that eligible creators earn based on how much Spotify Premium members stream their video content in the markets where the Spotify Partner Program is available ; so a US creator will now earn from viewers in these additional countries too. By country population, this grows the total potential audience by 43% (but not all content is equally popular in different countries). YouTube’s Head of Podcasts, Kai Chuck has left the company after a reorganisation. A YouTube spokesperson told TubeFilter: “To better serve podcasters on YouTube, we’re bringing the Podcast Partnerships team together with the News and Civics Partnerships teams. We’re grateful to Kai Chuk for all his contributions over the years.” The News and Civics Partnerships teams are led by Tim Katz, who wrote a blog post about YouTube Podcasts last month. Steven Bartlett’s Flight Studio, which launched last April , is readying a video podcast hosting company, called Flightcast . The developer, who goes under the name Rox Codes, is looking for beta testers on LinkedIn . A new high of 17.2% of Japanese adults aged 15-69 listen at least once a month; that figure rising to 34% for 15-19 year-olds. Audio in Japan has always seen lower consumption than in other countries. The 17.2% monthly listeners number compares with 55% in the US. Last week was the 100th anniversary of the birth of radio in Japan. Podnews’s Editor, James Cridland, will be on Tokyo radio station J-WAVE on Friday morning to talk about podcasting and radio’s future. Megyn Kelly is to launch her own podcast network . The MK Media network has already signed a number of journalists. Podcast hosting company RSS .com has added automatic Apple Podcasts submission . The feature from Apple, which was launched in Feb , was driven in part by comments in the Podnews Report Card, and makes it easier for new users to get into Apple Podcasts without registering as a user. (The new Report Card is published next week, in a keynote at Evolutions ). The report says YouTube “would allow host-read ads to be dynamically inserted and swapped out within individual YouTube videos”, as is already the case for audio podcasts using open RSS. YouTube hasn’t commented. Semafor suggest that Spotify offers this product. It doesn’t; videos on Spotify do not have dynamic ad insertion, and uploading a video episode replaces any audio episode. 427,000 podcasts from members of The Podcast Standards Project now use additional Podcasting 2.0 features , according to a new update. In a blog post, the group encourages co-operation between podcast hosting companies and podcast apps. The post is the first since August last year; it acknowledges the difficulty of making progress, and asks for “killer features” to help move the project forward. Generative audio AI company ai|coustics has raised €5mn (US$5.4mn) in funding. YouTube is adding a dedicated “Podcast” tab on the main screen of its Android TV app , thus highlighting more podcast content to YouTube’s biggest number of users - TV is now the primary device for YouTube viewing in the US. As with its podcasts page on the web , though, it contains plenty of content which appears to have been automatically marked as being a podcast, including news reports. YouTube is currently “the US’s preferred podcast service”, said Edison Research in October . According to Gen Z podcast fans (13-28 year-olds), video is skibidi and audio is slay - they overwhelmingly prefer audio podcasts , according to a new survey from podcast hosting company Transistor. 76% primarily listen to audio podcasts, with 18% consuming a mix of audio and video, and just 6% primarily watching video podcasts, according to the global survey. Transistor also finds that Spotify is the most-used podcast app for Gen Z (56%), with YouTube at 21% and Apple Podcasts at 10%. This mirrors findings in separate studies from Morning Consult and music apps in Edison Research’s Infinite Dial last year. Apple announced podcast transcriptions within Apple Podcasts just over a year ago, and the company says it has now completed creating transcripts for all previously published episodes across the 13 supported languages. That means that more than 100 million episodes in Apple Podcasts have transcripts now available. (The company also allows creators to supply their own transcripts, if preferred). Leave the laptop at home - Zoom has released the PodTrak P2 , a portable recorder for USB microphones. The product includes background noise reduction, and contains a built-in dynamic compressor. To use video on Spotify, she explains, publishers need to agree for their RSS feed to be replaced by a Spotify-hosted video file (used even if listeners only consume the audio track): so one show lost more than half its revenue because it was unable to sell dynamic audio ads to Spotify listeners (ironically, though Spotify’s Audience Network). The Spotify Partner Program is “an untested program with secretive math”, concludes McLoughlin: “the risk just isn’t worth it”. YouTube had “1 billion podcast listeners” in Jan 7:14

YouTube released a new headline data point, suggesting that there were more than 1 billion viewers of podcast content a month in January. It also repeated that 400 million monthly hours of podcast watching were consumed on TV sets. Putting the 1 billion number in context, Spotify claimed just 120mn monthly podcast listeners in November. Apple Podcasts is likely to be smaller in terms of monthly listeners, according to Podtrac in Jan 2023 : but Apple Podcasts had a significantly higher share of downloads. Worth remembering, too, that a listener to a second of “podcast” content on YouTube - even automatically-played content - will count towards the 1 billion figure, irrespective of the amount of downloads they make, or the time they spend with podcasts. Reach doesn’t translate to time spent. However, Edison Research said in Oct 2024 that, of all the podcast platforms, YouTube was used “most often” to listen to podcasts . We wondered what YouTube considered a “podcast” to be. A YouTube spokesperson told us that the company follows the lead of creators marking a playlist as a “podcast” when they upload. The YouTube Podcasts homepage in the US, as one example, includes full TV news shows like NBC Nightly News and PBS NewsHour , which both broadcasters have marked as a “podcast” - but there are audio podcasts for NBC Nightly News and PBS News Hour as well. Australia’s podcasts homepage includes individual news stories from 7NEWS, which are in a YouTube playlist called 7NEWS Just In , but there’s also a 7NEWS Just In audio podcast, too. YouTube’s blog post was authored by Tim Katz. Who’s he? He describes himself as “VP, Partnerships, Podcasts”. That’s the first outing for this job title; on LinkedIn, he’s “Director, Head of Sports + News Partnerships”; in news coverage in 2023 , he was “Director and Global Head of Responsibility”; and in 2024 , he was “Global Director of Responsibility and Leader for the Canada and Latin America region”. We don’t see any use of this podcasting job title until this announcement. Katz is interviewed (as “Vice President for Partnerships”) in Bloomberg. The YouTube podcast trend “existed but it was a matter of us pouring some gas on it,” he said. Some parts of the industry give notes of caution. Transistor’s Justin Jackson believes, in a personal blog post, that the podcast industry is fundamentally misdiagnosing YouTube's role in consumers' lives and overestimating the benefits it will get from the platform. Wondery’s founder Hernan Lopez suggests to keep in mind the bigger picture . “Of note, [YouTube] cited 400 million monthly hours of podcast watching on TV sets —but that's against 30 billion hours+ of [overall] YouTube time spent on TV sets.” He adds that the oft-quoted “$2bn” annual figure severely underestimates the total size of the podcast market (as it doesn’t count international, subscription, or video). > > > Read more of today’s podcast industry news stories on the Podnews website : and get our free daily newsletter. Breaking: Subscription-based podcast and audiobook company Podimo has hit 1 million paid global subscribers , the company announced this morning. The five year-old company is profitable in three of its markets, and operates in Europe and Latin America. Audiochuck, the podcast company run by Ashley Flowers, has received $40mn in investment from the Chernin Group . The company turned a profit of $45mn last year, reports Bloomberg. She’s looking to expand her staff to 130. Dan Bongino, who had Donald Trump on his podcast before the election, has been named the deputy director of the FBI. The Dan Bongino Show does around 322,000 downloads per episode, as well as being syndicated across radio stations in the US, as a replacement for Rush Limbaugh. “We extend our heartfelt congratulations,” said Cumulus Media. “Dan has entertained and informed tens of millions of listeners every day and we are grateful for our successful partnership. After last year’s Podnews Report Card highlighted the difficulty of submitting a show to Apple Podcasts, Apple has fixed things - rolling out a new, streamlined, process to automatically submit a show for creators using selected podcast hosts. It removes the requirement to open an Apple account first. The launch podcast hosts are: Audioboom, Audiomeans, Ausha, Blubrry, Buzzsprout, Captivate, Castos, Hubhopper, Libsyn, Pinecast, Podbean, Podspace and Transistor. Creators can then claim their show in Apple Podcasts Connect at a later date, should they want to. There is a new, streamlined process for that, using a token to place in your RSS feed. The new process also handles transferral of podcasts from one account to another. The existing method of submitting a show isn’t going away, if you’re on other hosts. The clarity of responses to the Podnews Report Card last year was clear - with creators and publishers saying the Apple Podcasts submission process was “awfully complicated” with “too many hoops”, that the account requirement was “ridiculous and unnecessary”, and that it was particularly bad for “people who are new to podcasting”. We shared all the responses with Apple last year, and are delighted to see significant change, which should benefit the entire industry. Edison Research released the Top 25 Podcasts in the UK for Q4/2024. News podcasts did well this quarter, which included the US Presidential Election. Spotify shared some creator earnings from the first month of the Spotify Partner Program. “Hundreds of podcast creators surpassed $10,000 in monthly revenue”, the company said, but also gave three specific examples of January earnings. We’re All Insane earned more than $17,000. (An advertising planning tool that Podnews has access to suggests that this show does 579,000 downloads a month overall.) Kinda Funny Gamescast made over $10,000. (This show, we think, gets 124,000 downloads a month overall.) Your Mom’s House with Christina P. and Tom Segura and 2 Bears, 1 Cave with Tom Segura & Bert Kreischer , two podcasts from YMH studios, saw combined earnings of more than $105,000. (These shows may do a total of 6.5mn downloads a month). So, is this doing better than advertising? Podnews analysis suggests that We’re All Insane is achieving $29 CPM; Kinda Funny $80 CPM; and YMH is doing $16 CPM. However, total download numbers are from all platforms, not just Spotify. Should Spotify account for 50% of total consumption, of course, you can double those CPM numbers. And baked-in advertising is still fine within these shows, so this is additive revenue. Spotify was also keen to highlight the growth in consumption that video gives: We’re All Insane claims a 6x consumption increase in total hours year-on-year; Kinda Funny and the YMH Studios shows around 22% month-on-month. The company adds: “The top 20 video podcasts eligible for the Spotify Partner Program have seen an average 24%+ growth of consumption. Overall, video podcast consumption on Spotify is up more than 20% since the program’s launch.” Some other detail: Within Spotify for Creators, participants can see the sources of their revenue with ad-supported (streams) and premium (share). (Wouldn’t it be fun if you wanted to share some with us?) Spotify promised videos would be “uninterrupted by ad breaks”. Exclusive: Amazon’s Wondery has closed its operations in Mexico and in Brazil. Podnews understands that the closure was announced in a short staff meeting earlier this week. Those impacted include Sarah Barrett , the company’s Head of Mexico Podcast Content. It comes the same week as some of Wondery Mexico’s shows were nominated for the Ondas Globales awards; and the LATAM units own a successful YouTube page with more than 500,000 subscribers. Amazon tells Podnews: “After a careful review of our priorities and customers’ needs, we’ve made the difficult decision to close Wondery’s Brazil and Mexico original content operations. This decision wasn’t made quickly or easily, and we remain committed to developing immersive storytelling and audio content for audiences.” A raw download figure doesn’t tell you whether those listeners are new, or returning. Are they people who listened once and swore to never again listen? Or are you not reaching new audiences at all? Bumper has worked out how to calculate new vs returning listeners, using first-party data within the Apple and Spotify dashboards. That data will be added to the Bumper Dashboard soon (which we reviewed last August .) Acast has posted its first year in profit , according to the company’s financial year-end report. The full report claims a 19% net sales growth for 2024, and an EBITDA profit of $2.2mn. Total listens were down 13% in 2024, which the company attributes to Apple’s changes in iOS 17 . In Q4/2024, net sales grew by 17% overall, with sales in North America growing by 33%. However, the number of listens was down by 8% in the quarter: Acast say this is because the BBC left Acast’s network for Triton Digital . The BBC left in late November, so expect a further decrease of listens in Q1. The UK itself is a “challenging market” according to CEO Ross Adams (though Acast didn’t represent the BBC there). Netflix wants to get into video podcasts , according to Business Insider . It reportedly tried to hire Alex Cooper last year. Meta has launched a demo tool called Audiobox - “create an audio story with AI voices and sounds.” It’s quite a fun thing to play with, though it seems to like whispering very much. Spotify released its Q4/24 financial figures. 2024 was the company’s first full year of profitability (posting net profit of €1.14bn (US $1.18bn). Revenue grew 16% year-on-year to €4.2bn ($4.3bn). There are now more than 330,000 video podcasts, and 270 million people have streamed one, says the company. Chris Petersen has also taken a look at the numbers . A claim we reported on yesterday from the Australian Podcast Report “requires additional context and clarification”, says CRA, the Australian commercial radio industry body, following queries by Podnews. We carry statements from CRA and Triton Digital ; and give our own take: not least, CRA gave us quite a different response the first time we asked. “ Music publishers are asking Spotify to remove thousands of unlicensed songs from podcasts on its platform ”, reports the Wall Street Journal , claiming the number is around 2,500. The story adds: “Spotify said it reached out to NMPA ... and asked for details, but didn’t receive any response.” Spotify has always removed shows with whole music tracks, irrespective of licensing. Americans listen to audio for almost four hours every day, and almost one-in-five hours listening to ad-supported audio is listening to a podcast. The data is released by Nielsen today in the company’s 2024 Quarterly Audio Report , including data from Edison Research. Commercial radio gets a 67% share of ad-supported audio. For those aged 18-34, podcasts are even more popular, taking up almost a third of all time spent listening to ad-supported audio. Positive numbers, but ones that show how much growth is possible. 48% of 18-34s in Australia listen to podcasts every month, according to new data - and podcast listeners are listening to more shows. The 2024 Australian Podcast Report was released today , released by Australian commercial radio industry body Commercial Radio & Audio. The report, though, needs to be read with caution, since it relies heavily on data from the Triton Digital Podcast Ranker, which only lists participating publishers. One claim in the press release , quoted by Lizzie Young, CRA’s CEO, is that “63% of podcasts are achieving more than 100,000 average monthly downloads in 2024”. That simply isn’t true: based on our analysis, this number comes from the top 200 participating shows in the ranker (where, for example, in December, 139 of the 200 listed shows achieved more than 100,000 downloads - about 70%.) Most podcasts will achieve significantly less than this. Additionally, the report claims that total average monthly listeners in 2024 increased 8.5% year-on-year, but these are numbers for participating publishers, and as the small print notes, “numbers will increase as new publishers join”. The ABC joined in Dec 2023. The CRA wasn’t able to respond to us by press time. Kast Media’s bankruptcy procedure appears to have got a lot more complicated - the owner of Jim Cornette’s shows, Arcadian Vanguard, is suing Kast Media CEO Colin Thomson and his family members - and also suing LiveOne and PodcastOne. The complaint alleges that $6.9mn of cash went missing; claims that family members received two cars and a $7,665 Cartier watch; and also alleges that this was occurring with PodcastOne’s knowledge. The summons was served on Friday. The Triton Digital 2024 US Podcast Report also suggests that YouTube continues to be the most “preferred” platform for 33.1% of all podcast listeners, while Apple Podcasts has slumped to a new low: preferred by just 12.2%. The data, which is a free download, also contains more detail about the US Podcast Ranker. Video podcasts are “not equally sensible and beneficial for all podcasts“. A group of German podcast marketers and publishers have worked together to produce a white paper explaining the benefits of audio-only podcasts . Advantages include better distribution, and monetisation, and audio podcasts have a 150% higher listen-through rate than video podcasts. There have been a number of layoffs at SiriusXM, impacting the podcast teams and Earwolf. Podnews understands that 100 roles were impacted, representing 2% of the workforce, along with a number of changes to the company’s structure. The CEO Jennifer Witz called it a “profoundly challenging day”.
