64: Tiffany Yau (Ph.D candidate) on Bridging Research to Practice

This time on Creative Distillation, Brad and Jeff conduct field research from a cozy booth at legendary Pearl St pub, The Mountain Sun.

They’re joined by CU Ph.D candidate Tiffany Yau, an avid Creative Distillation listener! She’s also a social entrepreneur, researcher, author, TEDx speaker, and community-builder who is passionate about empowering people to make a positive impact on the world around them.

Over a couple of Mountain Sun’s finely-crafted brews, Tiffany speaks with Brad and Jeff about:
    * why a young, already-seasoned entrepreneur is pursuing a PhD over launching a new business
    * the real impact of impact investment in young entrepreneurs
    * her dedication to solving grand challenges, and bridging research to practice
    * and the merits of Mountain Sun’s Girl Scout Stout

    Enjoy and cheers!

63: Larry Plummer (Ivey Business School) on Geographic Impact on Entrepreneurial Success

Previously on Creative Distillation, Brad and Jeff visited Pits & Stems, a real-live speakeasy located somewhere in Old North Boulder.

They were joined by Larry Plummer, a PhD from CU who’s now the Director of the Ivey New Venture Project and an Associate Professor of Entrepreneurship at Ivey Business School at Western University in London, Ontario.

Pits & Stems proprietor Ethan Decker stays with us, continuing to mix some of the finest cocktails we’ve experienced as the four of them discuss Larry’s research on geography and entrepreneurship, and the remarkably strong linkage between where you launch your startup and its probability of success.

Speaking of linkage, we also learn there’s a strong probability that Larry and Ethan are related.

    Enjoy and cheers!

62: Ethan Decker, Owner & Sole Proprietor, Pits & Stems

This time on Creative Distillation, Brad and Jeff conduct field research at one of our more interesting — and favorite — locations to date. Pits & Stems is an actual speakeasy tucked away in a quiet Old North Boulder neighborhood.

The owner and sole proprietor, Ethan Decker, walks our hosts through the brief and colorful history of his garage-based passion project, regaling them with fascinating tales and some of the finest cocktails ever sipped on Creative Distillation — and that’s a lot of cocktails.

They’re also joined by Larry Plummer, Ph.D, Associate Professor of Entrepreneurship at Ivey Business School at Western University in London, Ontario. He earned his Ph.D. in strategy and entrepreneurship right here at CU- Boulder.

It’s a lively and slightly-enlightening conversation and a real feel-good episode from start to finish.

    Enjoy and cheers!

61: Thomas J. Dean (CSU) on Selling Out vs. Selling In

Previously on Creative Distillation, Brad and Jeff took a drive up to Ft. Collins to speak with Katie Wallace, Head of ESG at New Belgium Brewing. They discussed the history and impact of this historic microbrewery while sampling some of their fine brews — including the updated recipe for the iconic Fat Tire Ale.

They were joined by Thomas J. Dean, Tinberg Business for a Better World University Professor at Colorado State University in Ft. Collins, who’s a big fan and friend of New Belgium, as well as our guest for this episode.

Katie stays with us for a little bit, for a fascinating discussion about “selling out vs selling in”, something New Belgium knows a lot about. It’s also the topic of Tom’s paper: Lost Battles, Trojan Horses, Open Gates, and Wars Won: How Entrepreneurial Firms Co-Create Structures to Expand and Infuse Their Sustainability Missions in the Acquisition Process

EPISODE 60: Katie Wallace, Head of ESG, New Belgium Brewing

This time, Brad and Jeff take the show on the road, an hour up I-25 to Ft. Collins and the home of New Belgium Brewing, one of the original Colorado craft brewers. There, they speak with Katie Wallace, Head of Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) at New Belgium, about the brewer’s incredible origin story, which begins in 1991 in a Ft. Collins basement.

They’re also joined by Thomas J. Dean, Tinberg Business for a Better World University Professor at Colorado State University in Ft. Collins. He’s a Ft. Collins local and a longtime fan and friend of New Belgium - as well as our featured guest for our next episode.

EPISODE 59: Unpublished! Jeff's Secret Research Into Public-Private Partnerships

Previously on Creative Distillation, Brad and Jeff conducted field research at The Burns Pub, a truly authentic British Public House located in Broomfield, Colorado. They tasted some fine whiskies and other spirits and had an illuminating conversation with founder Jonny Odde.

This time, Brad and Jeff are still at The Burns, where Brad tricks Jeff into discussing
his own research — a first for Creative Distillation. Jeff tells us about an unpublished working paper that explores a public-private partnership addressing climate change through entrepreneurship, right here in beautiful Boulder.

    Enjoy and cheers!

    Learn more at TheBurnsPub.com

Jeff’s paper, “Converging Winds: Logic Hybridization in the Colorado Wind Energy Field,” was co-written with Desiree Pacheco and Timothy Hargrave in the Academy of Management Journal. Check the show notes for a link. https://journals.aom.org/doi/abs/10.5465/amj.2013.0657

The “trick” paper Brad and Jeff discussed, about the Boulder Energy Challenge, is an in progress collaboration with Kansas Associate Professor of Entrepreneurship (and CU PhD alum) Beth Embry. It’s top secret for now. Let’s just keep this one between us.
