There's a whole lot of noise out there telling us how to build and run our business. But after four years of running my own business and supporting hundreds of my coaching clients in theirs too, I've learned over and over again that nobody knows what our business needs better than we do. And when we look to others to tell us what to do, we can usually find ourselves getting a little lost and disconnected from our business along the way.So in today's episode I'm sharing why we shouldn't want a workshop, course, coach, or book to tell us how to run our business, and instead why they should be a catalyst for our own discovery and exploration in our work. Because when we look for someone else to tell us what to do, we outsource the leadership of our business and the only person who can ever truly lead it is ourselves. So if you ever feel like you’ve been listening to all of the noise but you’re not feeling any closer to where you want to be in your work, this is the episode for you. My biggest hope is that today’s episode can encourage you to know that you are the expert of your own business, and that you are oh so capable of moving it forward every step of the way too.And if you'd like to connect more you can find me over on Instagram, and dive into more of my work over at my website too.My website and Instagram
What if there was a different way to build a thriving business than the path of hustle, hustle, hustle that's been modelled to us? What if we could thrive in our life every step of way too? In this episode I share how I've recently crossed over into six figures in my business and why, after four years now of taking a very slow and steady approach to my business, what I am most happy about is that I’ve been able to reach that milestone while also being able to work less, live more, and find more fulfilment and joy in my business and life too. Because I don’t believe that we should sacrifice ourselves in the pursuit of success, and I don’t believe that fast and furious is the very best way to build a business either. So in this episode I dive into why slower is sometimes better when it comes to business growth, why I believe it’s just as important to thrive in our life as it is to thrive in our work, and why how we experience the journey is always way more important than the destination we’re trying to reach. And if you'd like to dive deeper into your own business, my Uncover Your Big-Hearted Business mini book may be a great place to start and you can download the PDF through this link here. So last year I wrote a book. It's a mini book, less than 50 pages long, called Nobody Is Going To Do Your Business (Or Your Life) For You and I shared it as a little gift with my Weekly Letters email community alongside an audiobook that I recorded for it too. This little book explored some of the lessons I've learned over the years as a creative coach about what it takes to bridge the gap between where are now and where we truly want to be in our creative life. It's filled with 12 mini essays and it's probably one of my favourite projects I've ever brought to life in my business. Since then I've also brought to life some other mini books for my Weekly Letters community, from a ten-step business plan for creatives, to a mini book filled with 105 writing prompts, to a collection of fifty of my favourite letters that I've sent to them over the years, and I have so many other ideas swirling around my mind for future mini books that I'm really excited to bring to life and share with my community soon. So for this season of Make It Happen I wanted to share with you the audiobook of Nobody Is Going To Do Your Business (Or Your Life) For You, in the hopes that it can be of some encouragement and support for you in your creative work and life right now. And if you'd like to dive into the mini book and other mini books I have created, and have exclusive access to new mini books that I'll publishing along the way too, you can find out more and join my Weekly Letters community over at www.jencarrington.comSo what you'll find next are 13 episodes sharing the chapters of Nobody is Going To Do Your Business (Or Your Life) For You, and my biggest hope is that on the other side you will have a little more clarity, a little more courage, and a little more determination to show up and bring to fruition the creative work and life that you're aching for.Find out more at my website
For the last episode of this season of Make It Happen I'm joined by the awesome and incomparable Laura Jane Williams. I've been reading Laura's blog for years, and I loved her memoirs Becoming and Ice Cream For Breakfast too, so I was ridiculously excited to have the opportunity to connect with her for this episode. We explore what it means to be a storyteller not a writer, her own writing process, taking control of your creative career by thinking of yourself as an entrepreneur and so much more.Where you can find Laura:WebsiteInstagramTwitter BecomingIce Cream For Breakfastand for more from Jen head here
In this episode I'm joined by Cat Byrne, a designer who runs her own branding and web design studio over at Gatto Web, a podcast host, and a past client and wonderful friend of mine too. We explore Cat's journey last year of choosing more for herself in her creative business and life, how she pivoted her business to work better for her so she could work less, earn more, and find more freedom and fulfilment along the way too. I had the pleasure of walking with Cat in this journey as her coach, and I was so excited to bring her onto the show this season to share her story with you and have a really honest conversation together about what it looks like to really choose more for yourself in your creative work and life and the work and courage it takes to make that happen too.Where you can find Cat online:WebsitePodcastInstagramand for more from Jen head here
In this episode I'm joined by Yasamin Al-Tiay, a musician based in New Zealand and an awesome client of mine too. We dive into her journey as a musician, how she's recently discovered that her creative happiness comes from within, and how she makes opportunities for herself in an industry full of gatekeepers too.Where you can find Yasamin:WebsitePodcastand for more from Jen head here
In this episode I'm joined by my wonderful friend and client, Fiona Barrows, a brand storyteller based in Frome and we talk all about her journey so far, from leaving a her life in London as a literary agent three years ago to travel around Asia and become a freelance copywriter, to where she is now as a big-hearted business owner living in Frome, UK. We dive into her mindset shift from being a freelancer to becoming a business owner, the message behind her podcast all about living life a little differently, and the philosophy that shapes her work as a brand storyteller too.Where you can find Fiona online:WebsitePodcastInstagramTwitterand for more from Jen head here
In this episode I'm joined by my husband and partner in crime in work and life, Alex Kontis-Carrington, as I knew I had to get him on an episode this season to talk all things podcasting. As a freelance podcast editor, and the editor and producer of Make It Happen since day one of this show too, he really knows about what it takes to bring an awesome podcast to life and in this episode we talk all about producing your own podcast, why it can be such an awesome content stream for business owners, and we also talk a little bit about him taking the leap last year to work for himself full time too. Where you can find Alex online:WebsiteTwitterand for more from Jen head here
