In stockmanship (the art and science of handling cattle in a safe, effective, low-stress manner), we have this phrase . . . good movement draws good movement. It’s this thing that happens when we ask a small group of cattle, maybe a cow, or a pair to move out in a certain direction and their movement draws the whole herd into moving in the same direction. Good movement happens when we approach the cattle with a positive attitude, read and really listen to what they’re telling us, and communicate accordingly. We don’t approach the aware, flighty cattle the same as we do the tame, docile cattle. We adjust ourselves, our energy, and approach, and communicate with each differently. These adjustments help us effectively draw good movement from each, which then draws good movement from the herd. But it starts with us. The same is true for humans. Good movement starts with us. Welcome to Good Movement Draws Good Movement, the podcast where farmers, ranchers, and rural folks can grow relationally through awareness, understanding, and effective communication. Hey, it’s me - T. I’m your host, and I, along with my guests, will be covering topics related to drawing good movement - things like self and social awareness, brain science, positive psychology, extending grace, and so much more. We’ll share tools that can help you understand why you are the way you are, why others are the way they are, and how you can use that to step out of self-told lies with grace and compassion to draw good movement in conversations, relationships, and life in rural America. Tune in every Tuesday and make sure to hit subscribe so you never miss an episode! Let’s go draw good movement! In today's episode, I'm talking about self-reliance vs. connection and what actually helps us heal. So many of us were raised to believe that needing help is a weakness or that slowing down to feel our emotions makes us soft.
Healing in isolation might feel safe, but true transformation happens in connection, especially when we have someone to walk beside us. Community gives us the courage to stay with the hard stuff and is what act...
In today's episode, I'm talking about why emotions aren't the problem - avoiding them is. Emotions are meant to help, guide, and connect you. They're not an inconvenience (contrary to what you may believe) but are actually a BEAUTIFUL part of our design as humans!
I know that feeling and connecting with your emotions can sound scary, but it is VITAL if you want to experience lasting healing in your life! I would love for you to take...
In today's episode, I'm talking about small gestures, big impact, and what the power of simple connection looks like. Connection is VITAL for us as humans - our brains thrive on social interaction!
Small connections are beautiful and transformative and can do SO much to bridge the gaps between people in our society today. Here's to making more intentional connections that leave a lasting impact!
In this episode, I cover:
In today's episode, I'm talking about a lesson from Ted Lasso on healing and holding two things at once. As humans, we REALLY struggle with duality in our culture. We've been conditioned to think that everything is either/or and not ever both/and.
It's crucial that you don't suppress your emotions, even when they feel uncomfortable. Those suppressed emotions won't just magically disappear! One of my favorite ways to work ...
In today's episode, I'm talking about why healing isn't about never hurting again. Just like physical wounds, emotional healing requires time, protection, and intentional care. Even when you've worked through something, and you feel healed and closed, something is bound to open that wound back up from time to time!
Setting boundaries and giving yourself space can really help with emotional healing, especially when you're just beginn...
In today’s episode, we’re redefining ‘I’m good’ and how feeling every emotion & healing deeply impacts you. So often, we think that feeling good means we’re never sad, worried, angry, etc., but that’s definitely not the case.
Healing is never a one-and-done thing, and it’s not going to look the same for everyone. If you need some extra support on YOUR healing journey, I would be honored to walk alongside you!
In this episode, I&n...
I'm excited to welcome Kelly Greene back to the podcast today and continue the conversation from the last episode!
Today, we're talking about finding meaning in the mess and how purpose fuels resistance. Kelly and I also discuss the vast, transcendent emotion of awe and how this gives you something powerful to focus on outside of yourself.
From learning about holistic resilience to finding meaning in the mess and purpose, both ...
I'm excited to welcome my friend, Kelly Greene, Certified Health and Wellness Coach, onto the podcast today!
In today's part 1 episode, we're discussing holistic resilience and what rethinking strength and survival looks like. Kelly has experienced her fair share of trauma over the years and has often been told how resilient she is. While she may look like it on paper, resilient was not a word she would have used to describe herself...
In today's episode, we're talking about why we stay and the pull of the familiar, even when it hurts. As humans, we find comfort in familiarity. Our brains are wired for survival, and we LIKE what's comfortable and safe, even when it's actually the opposite of that.
The pull of the familiar is SO strong, but it's not unbreakable. With curiosity, bravery, and support, it's totally possible to step out of what's comfortable...
In today's episode, Tom and I are talking about how we've navigated expectations in ranch life and marriage. We've learned that unspoken expectations are resentments waiting to happen. If you're going to have an expectation about XYZ, you've got to speak it - not everyone is going to have the same expectation or understand where you're coming from!
We hope this episode gives you a more REAL insight into how we've navigate...
In today's episode, I'm talking about cleaning the shop and why feeling your feelings gets worse before it gets better. Many of us have been little hoardy hoarders with our feelings for years. When you finally decide it's time to start the process of working through your emotions, not only are you feeling your emotions in the moment, but you're also unpacking YEARS of emotions!
Feeling your feelings is NOT easy - especially if it's ...
I'm honored to welcome a special guest, former Marine Jake Ogren, onto the podcast today!
Jake is a husband, dad, and former Marine who chose to serve after 9/11 happened. After doing multiple tours in 12 years, he left the U.S. Marine Corps and has been shoeing horses for 10 years now. He's a good friend of ours and our horse's farrier, and since I've known him, we've had MANY conversations surrounding the topics of mental health, ...
Healthy boundaries are essential for protecting ourselves and our relationships, but unhealthy boundaries can isolate us and keep us from facing reality. I talked about why boundaries can be one of the kindest things we do for ourselves in episode 36 (you can listen here if you haven't or if you need a refresher).
In today's episode, I'm talking about the process of maintaining your fences and the art of healthy boundaries. My...
In today's episode, I'm talking about what happens when pain finds you and a bit of a personal update on growth, healing, and hope. I was given news that no one EVER wants to hear when it comes to their health.
As I'm currently walking through this new and unfamiliar situation, I can't help but think of how vital it is to process our emotions. When we choose to process (or, more often, NOT process) our emotions, this ultimately impa...
"Pain isn't a bug; it's a feature." I first heard this quote from grief expert David Kessler on the Dr. John Deloney Show (give it a listen HERE if you want to check it out). This particular phrase hit me, and it really stuck with me.
In today's episode, I'm talking about the gift of pain and why we should stop ignoring it. Pain is not an anomaly - it's not meant to be shoved down or something we need to fix. Pain draws our at...
In today's episode, Tom and I are talking about what burnout on the ranch looks like and how we're learning to recover faster. This fall was tougher than usual, and it seemed to drag on and on - we both felt that way throughout the season!
We're also chatting about winter projects we're focusing on and what Tom's experience with burnout has been like.
Burnout is incredibly real in this line of work, but it doesn't have to be your rea...
As someone who grew up in rural America (and is still there), I'm very familiar with the mindset that comes along with this way of life. We're raised to keep our emotions to ourselves, work hard, and push through, no matter WHAT. Talking about our feelings and emotions is unnecessary and makes us look weak.
In today's episode, I'm talking about breaking the stigma and what redefining strength in rural communities looks like.&n...
In today’s episode, I want to share the hard truth about emotions because, well, you gotta feel them ALL. When it comes to emotions, we must understand that they themselves are not the problem, but rather, our resistance to actually feeling them is.
If you’re someone who is used to numbing certain emotions, I really want you to get curious as to WHY you’re doing so. Instead of numbing, take time to recognize, feel, and accept ...
In today's episode, I'm talking about extending grace without accepting behavior. It's a universal truth that everyone has a reason for their actions - there is ALWAYS a why behind a behavior. Even when we don't know the whole truth (and we may never), we can choose to extend more grace.
My challenge for you is to look for that story that you might have missed. Even if you can't find it, please know that there IS a story you don't k...
In today's episode, we're discussing what "Relationship before Horsemanship" really looks like with Warwick Schiller and how this applies to ALL beings (not just horses).
We also discuss what unraveling and shattering long-held truths can look like, the importance of validation in all of our interactions, why extending grace to animals seems to come easier for us than to our fellow humans, and much more.
In this episode, we&nbs...
