Milano, 8 ottobre 2001, aeroporto di Linate. Alle 8.10 un aereo di linea della SAS in fase di decollo si scontra con un piccolo Cessna da turismo, entrato in pista per errore. L’impatto è tremendo, e in 18 secondi (questo è il tempo, calcolato dai periti, tra lo schianto e l’incendio che si sviluppa nel deposito bagagli attiguo alla pista) si compie il più grave incidente della storia dell’aviazione civile italiana, con 118 morti. In quattro episodi (uno ogni venerdì), Elisabetta Francia ricostruisce le storie di chi perse la vita quella mattina. Le intreccia con i racconti dei famigliari, dei medici legali, degli psicologi dell’emergenza, dei giornalisti, accorsi per primi in aeroporto, e dell’unico superstite, rimasto orribilmente ustionato. E descrive l’impegno civile portato avanti dal comitato dei parenti per trasformare il dolore del ricordo in uno strumento attivo al servizio della responsabilità e della cultura della sicurezza.
