Episode 78: The Chicken Whackers Pt. 1

Episode 78: The Chicken Whackers Pt. 1

A man named Luke originally reached out to the show on behalf of his younger brother. His brother Keegan left home to hitchhike and travel the country, which eventually turned into living on the street for years. When the family finally got Keegan off the street, he had many stories, but there was one in particular that he was nervous and afraid to discuss, involving a mysterious group called "The Chicken Whackers".
This story was very different from our normal submissions, which is why we liked it. This first part is mostly Keegan's backstory, what it's like living on the street, and how dangerous it can be.
Part 2 will be out in just a few days.

One of the very best out there

Genuinely love this podcast; it’s in my top 3. Found it thru Reddit when looking for similar podcasts to RR, as I truly enjoy the first hand story telling. I also like that most of the stories aren’t too scary so I don’t have to sleep with the lights on - bc there’s def podcasts that will go there. I’m a fan of this whole genre and probably dating myself when I say that I grew up listening to Coast to Coast AM - where ppl would call in to the radio show and tell their spooky stories. Jack is a great host, and doesn’t interject his opinions. This is the only podcast that I subscribe to the Patreon also. The extra content is well worth it. I have had odd things I can’t explain happen to me throughout my life and it feels like a community of like-minded people. We’re rational thinkers, but also, “want to believe.” Thank you, Jack.

Jack Lets The People Tell Their Story

Jack Wagner had good instincts as a curator, editor, and producer going in, and he’s only improved as the series has built its own momentum. Great stories, great sound, and Jack knows how to set the frame and let his narrators tell their truth. Commenters asking for shorter episodes… agree that there are some earlier, messier narratives — but right now Jack has no equals in this space for setting the scene, highlighting the core drama, and dealing with the aftermath.

“Many Things” episodes ruined this podcast

After listening to ep 56 - Many Things Pt 4 specifically, I immediately removed this podcast out of my rotation. It also made me realize that Jack is actually not a good podcast host lol. This entire time I’ve been tuning in I was like “dang this dude knows how to do a podcast!” Spoiler, he does not. What made Otherworld so enticing was the space provided to people with compelling, first hand accounts of paranormal events. Jack is usually silent during the story telling, which is what he does best. Staying silent. However, his questions do nothing to contribute to the story when he finally decides to host or moderate. When he interrupts to question people, it’s always related to him trying to prove to the audience that the stories are absolutely 100% true which comes off as desperation/sales pitchy. Like, we get it dude it’s real. Let them talk, I don’t want to hear you sell it. No one is listening past episode 1 going “all these personal stories are not true, let me continue to listen😠” But the worst offense from Jack was in episode 56 when he decided to let some drunk dude ramble without guiding the conversation or knowing when to lead. No one wants to listen to a drunk go on and on about absolutely nothing while dropping F bombs every other word. It was almost as if this dude’s life depended on saying the F word at least twice in every sentence. It just turned into a ramble and that’s it. It didn’t add to the story, it didn’t sell the story, and it was probably the cringiest podcast episode I have ever heard. The very few times Jack did cut in it was just to laugh about the drunk guy’s behavior and ask useless questions. Have you ever had to listen to an advertisement or watch a commercial that was so annoying but played over and over again? Like so annoying your ears might bleed, so you fast forward through the commercial or mute it? That was what this episode was after 10 mins. I recommend skipping the “Many Things” (genius title btw🙄) saga or not listening altogether. Some great alternatives with great hosts: Radio Rental, Let’s not meet, Odd trails
