Welcome to “What Would Ted Lasso Do?” We’re Dimple Dhabalia and Jeff Harry, two certified Ted Heads and podcast newbies exploring real-world lessons in leadership and positive psychology through Apple TV+’s sports-comedy-drama series “Ted Lasso.” Apart from our mutual love of all things Ted, we both also have backgrounds in leadership and positive psychology – so we figured it only made sense to find a way to combine the two! In our inaugural episode, we share a little about ourselves and talk about how we came up with the idea of starting this podcast. We also examine the lessons “Ted Lasso” imparts and how they relate to the real world.  Join us as we try to answer…what would Ted Lasso do? “There are leaders at every level, but there’s so much that we can learn in terms of different types of leadership and how people show up.” - Dimple In This Episode [01:43] How did we come up with the idea of starting a podcast? In the pilot episode of this podcast, we dig into the pilot episode of the “Ted Lasso” series. What is “The Lasso Way,” how does it apply to the real world – and how can we use it to live happier, more positive lives? “This ability to kind of let things roll off your back a little bit more and not take them seriously, I guess, have that faith that they’re gonna come around, like it’s gonna be okay.” - Dimple As a pair of diehard Ted Heads (who just happen to have backgrounds in leadership and positive psychology), we love Ted’s flexible, supportive leadership style.  In this episode we explore “The Lasso Way” and dive into various themes including the virtue of being uncomfortable, toxic positivity, connecting through kindness and a whole lot more. “You’re gonna come across a lot of people who just aren’t gonna see things the way that you do.” - Dimple In This Episode: [02:15] If you’re comfortable doing something, you’re probably doing it wrong [04:42] Introducing “The Lasso Way” [06:40] “Other people matter” mentality [09:40] Ted Lasso and Coach Beard’s chemistry [18:13] Jason Sudeikis’ SNL stint [20:17] Not everything is about you [24:19] The importance of connecting to people, especially during the pandemic [29:52] Making an impact on other people’s lives through kindness [34:04] Ted Lasso and the idea of toxic positivity [43:59] How the word “believe” resonates with us [46:48] “What Would Ted Lasso Do?” lessons to put into practice Resources & Links: We’d love to hear from you! #WWTLD  https://www.wwtldpodcast.com/ https://twitter.com/wwtldpodcast/ https://www.facebook.com/wwtldpodcast/ https://www.instagram.com/wwtldpodcast/ Learn More About Dimple Dhabalia  https://www.rootsintheclouds.com/ https://twitter.com/dimpstory https://www.instagram.com/dimpstory/ https://www.facebook.com/dimpledhabalia https://www.linkedin.com/in/dimpledhabalia/ Why Radically Human Leadership Is More Important Than Ever  https://www.rootsintheclouds.com/blog/why-radically-human-leadership-is-more-important-than-ever 4 Steps to Creating A Human-Centered Organization https://www.rootsintheclouds.com/blog/004-4-steps-to-creating-a-human-centered-organization Learn More About Jeff Harry: https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/ https://twitter.com/jeffharryplays https://www.instagram.com/jeffharryplays/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeffharryplays/ https://www.youtube.com/jeffharryplays https://www.tiktok.com/@jeffharryplays Building Psychological Safety At Work https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/building-psychological-safety Solve Your Problem With Play https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/coaching Jeff’s Positive Psychology Playlist https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/playlist

Are you a lion or a panda? It seems like a silly question – but in today’s episode, we realize the answer may actually teach us a lot about ourselves. “There’s constant opportunities of attunement or opportunities for people to play, and then there’s a lot of times the people that don’t wanna play are the ones that are most miserable.” - Jeff In this episode, we debate the virtues of panda vs. lion, recall the fond days of trapper keepers, and Dimple explains the concept of Bird by Bird to Jeff. Episode 2 also dives into the themes of psychological safety, human-centered leadership, the importance of play and how curiosity and empathy work together. “Every single moment we have is a new moment. “The leader doesn’t always need to be in the trenches. But that leader needs to know what it’s like being in the trenches. The leader needs to know that they are not above it. ” – Jeff What does it take to be a leader? What’s the connection between leadership and kindness? And what does psychological safety have to do with it? This week we dive into those questions as we explore the themes of Episode 3, including leadership, psychological safety, kindness, and bullying. Join us for the conversation and share some laughs as Jeff dishes about his 24-hour date and notices an homage to “Ratatouille,” while Dimple shares the story behind her fear of soccer balls. “Do our actions actually represent our values? Why does it feel so scary to be vulnerable – especially with our friends? And why do we always have to be accountable for our actions? Those are the questions we answer today as we explore this episode’s themes – including why being kind to one another starts with being kind to ourselves, and the importance of courageous communication. Jeff also explains his theory of kindness and how to deal with different kinds of a-holes at work, while Dimple discusses her issues with political correctness and the difference between being right and being happy. “The reason why so many of us can be mean to others is because we've been beating ourselves up for so long.” – Jeff In this episode (4:29) Kindness can be challenging (5:45) Dimple’s take on self-kindness (7:24) The episode’s theme: Being available for friends, and vulnerability (10:02) Analyzing Rebecca’s character (13:10) Effects of toxic people and relationships (15:28) Power dynamics   (19:12) Feeling righteous and justified (23:25) Painting yourself as the “hero” of the story you tell (25:08) Courage and honesty is key in difficult conversations (27:48) The fine line with friendships  (28:19) Befriending colleagues (30:38) Two-faced workmates (31:24) Political correctness  (35:56) Taking accountability for what you do (38:37) Sorry, can’t make a change  (46:08) “Don’t let the wisdom of age be wasted on you.” “We can do whatever we want but we have to do so with integrity and be accountable to ourselves and to people around us.” – Dimple Resources & Links Mentioned in Today’s Episode Jeff Harry’s Dealing With A-Holes At Work https://jeffharryplays.medium.com/how-to-deal-with-a-holes-at-work-through-play-a6d52ad312eb Musician Cam Cole https://www.camcole.com/ #WWTLD  https://www.wwtldpodcast.com/ https://twitter.com/wwtldpodcast/ https://www.facebook.com/wwtldpodcast/ https://www.instagram.com/wwtldpodcast/ Learn More About Dimple Dhabalia  https://www.rootsintheclouds.com/ https://twitter.com/dimpstory https://www.instagram.com/dimpstory/ https://www.facebook.com/dimpledhabalia https://www.linkedin.com/in/dimpledhabalia/ Why Radically Human Leadership Is More Important Than Ever  https://www.rootsintheclouds.com/blog/why-radically-human-leadership-is-more-important-than-ever 4 Steps to Creating A Human-Centered Organization https://www.rootsintheclouds.com/blog/004-4-steps-to-creating-a-human-centered-organization Learn More About Jeff Harry  https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/ https://twitter.com/jeffharryplays https://www.instagram.com/jeffharryplays/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeffharryplays/ https://www.youtube.com/jeffharryplays https://www.tiktok.com/@jeffharryplays Building Psychological Safety At Work https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/building-psychological-safety Solve Your Problem With Play https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/coaching Jeff’s Positive Psychology Playlist https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/playlist

Are our lives really built on the choices we make? And if they are, how can we be sure we’re making the right ones?  Episode 5 of “Ted Lasso” lets us dig into some meaty themes – such as the connection between agency and choice, toxic masculinity, being vulnerable in relationships and the importance of change. Jeff also tells a story about the time he was mansplained in Portugal, and Dimple overanalyzes the titles of “Ted Lasso” episodes. We also discuss the strength of the show’s female friendships, the power of reframing our challenges and focusing on gratitude.  “Even that concept of believe - we have a choice. We have a choice to believe in ourselves, to believe that we can do something. We have a choice to find the courage to take those difficult decisions. At the end of the day we can just sit back and hope for the best. But I think a lot of what I felt coming out of this was how much choice we have in a given moment.” - Dimple  In this episode 01:31 - Last week’s lessons 03:34 - The concept of manifestation 05:54 - Taking accountability for ourselves 09:03 - Dimple’s interpretation of “Tan Lines” 13:30 - Relationships as one of the episode’s themes 14:21 - Ted’s first big monologue 21:56 - Ted and the “believe” sign 26:46 - Jeff on being in a relationship where you’re walking on eggshells 28:24 - How the show’s soundtrack makes the episode more powerful 35:51 - The groomzilla and the bridezilla 40:42 - Toxic leaders and toxic people in the workplace 46:06 - Women supporting women 54:12 - Reframing with gratitude Resources & Links #WWTLD  https://www.wwtldpodcast.com/ https://twitter.com/wwtldpodcast/ https://www.facebook.com/wwtldpodcast/ https://www.instagram.com/wwtldpodcast/ Learn More About Dimple Dhabalia  https://www.rootsintheclouds.com/ https://twitter.com/dimpstory https://www.instagram.com/dimpstory/ https://www.facebook.com/dimpledhabalia https://www.linkedin.com/in/dimpledhabalia/ Why Radically Human Leadership Is More Important Than Ever  https://www.rootsintheclouds.com/blog/why-radically-human-leadership-is-more-important-than-ever 4 Steps to Creating A Human-Centered Organization https://www.rootsintheclouds.com/blog/004-4-steps-to-creating-a-human-centered-organization Learn More About Jeff Harry  https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/ https://twitter.com/jeffharryplays https://www.instagram.com/jeffharryplays/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeffharryplays/ https://www.youtube.com/jeffharryplays https://www.tiktok.com/@jeffharryplays Building Psychological Safety At Work https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/building-psychological-safety Solve Your Problem With Play https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/coaching Jeff’s Positive Psychology Playlist https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/playlist

Two Aces

2022-07-0551:03

Do we grow more from one big step – or a hundred little ones?  This week we explore episode 6 - Two Aces - and discuss how Ted’s vulnerability makes him a more empathetic and effective leader – and the lessons we can learn from the way he grows from his grief. We also examine this episode’s themes of agency vs autonomy and living into values, sports superstitions, double standards in gender, and what happens when we don’t allow ourselves to progress after pain.  Jeff also calls BS on team-building events, and Dimple explains the idea of Schadenfreude, or delighting in others’ misery.  “[We] see the world in one of three ways: either as a playground, a place that you can play and explore and everyone is safe to play with; a proving ground where you’re constantly in competition with other people and you feel like you constantly have to prove yourself; or as a battleground where you just see everyone as a threat.” – Jeff In This Episode How being vulnerable in grief leads to growth (03:52) Schadenfreude and healing after toxicity (08:17) Why you can feel like you’ve lost even after a win (10:21) How Jamie and Danny personify the concept of “the shadow and the sun” (13:03) Gwen Gordon’s theory of play (14:47) Sports superstitions as an example of Ted’s positive leadership (20:03) Letting go in order to move forward (24:58) Psychological safety and how leaders can build trust (25:48) Positive psychology and the virtue of feeling your feelings (35:37)  Leaders who gaslight their people (36:58) Dimple and Jeff’s most important episode takeaways (42:09) Resources & Links Mentioned in this Episode Gwen Gordon’s Theory of Play https://gwengordonplay.com/ Paul Sockett https://www.paulsockett.com/ #WWTLD  https://www.wwtldpodcast.com/ https://twitter.com/wwtldpodcast/ https://www.facebook.com/wwtldpodcast/ https://www.instagram.com/wwtldpodcast/ Learn More About Dimple Dhabalia  https://www.rootsintheclouds.com/ https://twitter.com/dimpstory https://www.instagram.com/dimpstory/ https://www.facebook.com/dimpledhabalia https://www.linkedin.com/in/dimpledhabalia/ Why Radically Human Leadership Is More Important Than Ever  https://www.rootsintheclouds.com/blog/why-radically-human-leadership-is-more-important-than-ever 4 Steps to Creating A Human-Centered Organization https://www.rootsintheclouds.com/blog/004-4-steps-to-creating-a-human-centered-organization Learn More About Jeff Harry  https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/ https://twitter.com/jeffharryplays https://www.instagram.com/jeffharryplays/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeffharryplays/ https://www.youtube.com/jeffharryplays https://www.tiktok.com/@jeffharryplays Building Psychological Safety At Work https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/building-psychological-safety Solve Your Problem With Play https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/coaching Jeff’s Positive Psychology Playlist https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/playlist
It's time to Make Rebecca Great Again this week as we dive into Episode 7 of What Would Ted Lasso Do? We spent a lot of time talking about the overarching theme of limiting beliefs and how they show up for our band of Richmond misfits, and how creating connection, empowering people and leaning into our own agency can help us move past them. We also explore a number of themes this week including radical responsibility, mental health and anxiety and the significance of strong female friendships, and the power of forgiveness. Dimple and Jeff also share their own experiences of overcoming limiting beliefs and explore why the most effective leaders work to help their people be the best versions of themselves, for themselves, and not the company's bottom line. “When we have those limiting beliefs that hold us back, we are kind of putting ourselves under the bus. So for me, noticing when I am running into a limiting belief, it's important to ask what agency do I have in the moment to change it to something else? That’s something I really want to focus on. What is the small action that I can actually do to disrupt it?” – Dimple In This Episode What limiting beliefs are, and what we can learn from the way Ted, Rebecca, Nate and other characters overcome theirs (04:52) The importance of psychological safety in expressing our opinions in a team setting (08:26) Why limiting beliefs often dictate our reality (11:06) The lessons on connection and growth that Dimple learned from one of the best leaders she’s ever worked with (13:05) Radical responsibility and courageous communication (16:58) Rebecca, Sassy and the concept of no-guilt friendships (26:12) Conditioned reactions, fight vs flight and Ted’s panic attacks (31:11) What leaders can learn from Ted about accountability, apologizing and following through (37:39) Resources & Links Mentioned SmartLess podcast with Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes & Will Arnett  https://www.smartless.com/ Coach John Wooden and the Pyramid of Success http://www.coachwooden.com/ Brene Brown https://brenebrown.com/ #WWTLD  https://www.wwtldpodcast.com/ https://twitter.com/wwtldpodcast/ https://www.facebook.com/wwtldpodcast/ https://www.instagram.com/wwtldpodcast/ Learn More About Dimple Dhabalia  https://www.rootsintheclouds.com/ https://www.instagram.com/dimpstory/ https://www.facebook.com/dimpledhabalia https://www.linkedin.com/in/dimpledhabalia/ https://twitter.com/dimpstory Why Radically Human Leadership Is More Important Than Ever - https://www.rootsintheclouds.com/blog/why-radically-human-leadership-is-more-important-than-ever 4 Steps to Creating A Human-Centered Organization - https://www.rootsintheclouds.com/blog/004-4-steps-to-creating-a-human-centered-organization Learn More About Jeff Harry  https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/ https://twitter.com/jeffharryplays https://www.instagram.com/jeffharryplays/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeffharryplays/ https://www.youtube.com/jeffharryplays https://www.tiktok.com/@jeffharryplays Building Psychological Safety At Work https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/building-psychological-safety Solve Your Problem With Play https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/coaching Jeff’s Positive Psychology Playlist https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/playlist

The Diamond Dogs

2022-07-1901:00:30

This week we dive into Episode 8 - Diamond Dogs and wow was this a juicy one with something for everyone! For leaders out there we explore the theme of emotional intelligence and what it has to do with effective leadership. We also talk about how radical honesty make us happier, and consider when it's better to be curious rather than judgmental.  This episode was also about #relationshipgoals as we watched the beginning of something between Roy and Keeley. We looked at the baggage we carry into relationships, and the power of calling each other out in relationships and friendships, and the dynamics of several other relationships on the show. We dive deep into everyone's favorite monologue and why curiosity is the most underrated tool in the leadership toolbox and realize that there are a lot more WWTLD moments out there than we may be realizing. As we explore these themes, Jeff does his best Rupert impression, and Dimple takes us back to the Sixties to introduce Ted Lasso to Don Draper. “The most important skill that a leader can have is emotional intelligence. And to me, this whole episode was such a demonstration of emotional intelligence and all the facets of it.” – Dimple In this episode (3:38) The ability to manage emotions   (8:26) Radical honesty  (11:16) Analyzing Roy’s raw emotions (17:19) Uncertainty with starting new relationships  (22:23) Discernment of telling the truth  (25:42) Jeff on calling out in relationships (28:45) Rebecca and Ted’s monologue (39:28) Understanding better manners (40:25) Curiosity as a leader’s tool  (42:12) Hurt people, hurt people  (51:56) Snowboarding company only cares for money (55:24) Ignoring bigger issues in workplaces (57:21) Dimple and Jeff’s key points from the episode Resources & Links Mentioned This Week The 4 Components of Emotional Intelligence - https://ohio4h.org/sites/ohio4h/files/imce/Emotional%20Intelligence%20Background.pdf  Winter Olympics: Snowboard company Burton defends working in Xinjiang - https://www.bbc.com/news/av/world-asia-china-60045448 #WWTLD  https://www.wwtldpodcast.com/ https://twitter.com/wwtldpodcast/ https://www.facebook.com/wwtldpodcast/ https://www.instagram.com/wwtldpodcast/ Learn More About Dimple Dhabalia  https://www.rootsintheclouds.com/ https://twitter.com/dimpstory https://www.instagram.com/dimpstory/ https://www.facebook.com/dimpledhabalia https://www.linkedin.com/in/dimpledhabalia/ Why Radically Human Leadership Is More Important Than Ever  https://www.rootsintheclouds.com/blog/why-radically-human-leadership-is-more-important-than-ever 4 Steps to Creating A Human-Centered Organization https://www.rootsintheclouds.com/blog/004-4-steps-to-creating-a-human-centered-organization Learn More About Jeff Harry  https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/ https://twitter.com/jeffharryplays https://www.instagram.com/jeffharryplays/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeffharryplays/ https://www.youtube.com/jeffharryplays https://www.tiktok.com/@jeffharryplays Building Psychological Safety At Work https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/building-psychological-safety Solve Your Problem With Play https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/coaching Jeff’s Positive Psychology Playlist https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/playlist

All Apologies

2022-07-2659:29

Why is it so hard to be accountable and admit when we’re wrong? More importantly, why are we so afraid of creating space to have those conversations?   This week we look at Episode 9, the penultimate episode, of What Would Ted Lasso Do? - All Apologies - and explore what’s at the heart of forgiveness.   We also dive deep into the connection between empathy and forgiveness, the perfectionistic tendencies of high performers, the importance of self-compassion, and what the audacity to BELIEVE looks like.   “Forgiveness is ultimately about growing from the process. … Oftentimes we forgive people not for them, but [for] us. Is it really the hope that kills you? Or is it the lack of hope that’s the real threat?  This question is at the heart of our discussion as we dive into episode 10 - The Hope That Kills You - which also happens to be the final episode of Season 1 of Ted Lasso and our podcast.  This week, we analyze the impact of hope – and what happens in the absence of it – on leadership and teamwork. “You always have an impact on somebody.  So the question is, what type of impact do you wanna have? How do you wanna show up in a room? How do you wanna show up at this moment? Because all of that adds up to something phenomenal and amazing. So what do you wanna do?” - Jeff Harry We also dive deeper into the role of motivation and agency in creating and sustaining hope and empowering the people you lead, and how hope ties into the overarching concept of believe that serves as the thruline of the show.  And finally we turn to the biggest lesson we each gleaned from the first season of Ted Lasso and what we’ll be taking with us as we move into the second!   In This Episode How leaders can empower their teams to succeed, even as roles change (05:53) How failure can make for a valuable perspective, and Brene Brown’s concept of “foreboding joy” (11:47) Where motivation comes from, and how to use it to create new solutions to problems (13:54) What productive relationships look like between leaders and their people, and trusting others to do their jobs (20:18) Overcoming the impulse to self-protect by “leaning into” disappointment, and the power of hope (24:02) The importance of problem-solving together, regardless of hierarchy or role, and building psychological safety on your team (32:24)  What a “ministry of presence” is, and how just being there can help us get one another through tough times (45:51)  The positive psychology behind allowing ourselves to feel pain (47:17) Resources & Links Mentioned in this Episode Soldiers Who Salsa - https://www.warriorsbeyondwar.org/soldiers-who-salsa-more Brene Brown on foreboding joy - https://www.huffpost.com/entry/dr-brene-brown-joy-gratitude-oprah_n_2885983 Hope theory - https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/beautiful-minds/201112/the-will-and-ways-hope mPEAK- https://rootsintheclouds.com/mpeak #WWTLD  https://www.wwtldpodcast.com/ https://twitter.com/wwtldpodcast/ https://www.facebook.com/wwtldpodcast/ https://www.instagram.com/wwtldpodcast/ Learn More About Dimple Dhabalia  https://www.rootsintheclouds.com/ https://twitter.com/dimpstory https://www.instagram.com/dimpstory/ https://www.facebook.com/dimpledhabalia https://www.linkedin.com/in/dimpledhabalia/  Why Radically Human Leadership Is More Important Than Ever - https://www.rootsintheclouds.com/blog/why-radically-human-leadership-is-more-important-than-ever 4 Steps to Creating A Human-Centered Organization - https://www.rootsintheclouds.com/blog/004-4-steps-to-creating-a-human-centered-orgaization Learn More About Jeff Harry  https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/ https://twitter.com/jeffharryplays https://www.instagram.com/jeffharryplays/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeffharryplays/ https://www.youtube.com/jeffharryplays https://www.tiktok.com/@jeffharryplays Building Psychological Safety At Work https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/building-psychological-safety Solve Your Problem With Play https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/coaching Jeff’s Positive Psychology Playlist https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/playlist

Welcome to Season 2 of What Would Ted Lasso Do!  We’re back for another season with some really exciting episodes ahead, and we’re so grateful for the community that we’ve cultivated here. Thank you for being a part of this journey!  As we dive into the second season of Ted Lasso, the dynamics between the characters that we know and love are undeniably shifting, so what happens when these beloved individuals have to move through uncomfortable moments? What happens when they’re forced to grow and adapt?  Well, sometimes they have to reach out to others.  “I love that they’re starting to weave in this idea that like, sometimes you have to ask for help, and there has to be an understanding that all of our parts of life are connected. And so we’re not going to forget one thing just because we’re given kind of permission to forget it.” – Dimple (33:08) In this episode, we’re breaking down where we end up when optimism is temporarily absent, how to truly listen to those around us, the importance of character, integrity, and vulnerability in intimate connections, why leadership requires us to marry gentleness and assertion, and why we should never ever settle for less than we deserve.  In the words of Roy Kent, “Don’t you dare settle for ‘fine.’”   In This Episode [05:31] Beginning the season, shifting relationships, and how to move forward when optimism is missing [13:50] How to regulate apprehension, superstition, and aggression in leadership positions   [22:33] Why “fixing it” and offering solutions is not always the response people are seeking [26:08] The importance of developing boundaries and trust in your relationships  [33:33] How to marry authenticity and professionalism in a workplace  [ ] Evaluating character and integrity and embracing vulnerability in the face of intimacy [50:12] Fun references throughout the show  [55:12] Wrapping up the episode and revealing how we’ll be taking these lessons into the coming week Resources & Links Mentioned  World Domination Summit IG 1236 Angel Number Trudi Lebron – The Antiracist Business Book Organizational Trauma: The Unacknowledged Trauma That May Be Impacting Your Organization More Than You Realize   #WWTLD  https://www.wwtldpodcast.com/ https://twitter.com/wwtldpodcast/ https://www.facebook.com/wwtldpodcast/ https://www.instagram.com/wwtldpodcast/ Learn More About Dimple Dhabalia  https://www.rootsintheclouds.com/ https://twitter.com/dimpstory https://www.instagram.com/dimpstory/ https://www.facebook.com/dimpledhabalia https://www.linkedin.com/in/dimpledhabalia/ Why Radically Human Leadership Is More Important Than Ever  https://www.rootsintheclouds.com/blog/why-radically-human-leadership-is-more-important-than-ever 4 Steps to Creating A Human-Centered Organization https://www.rootsintheclouds.com/blog/004-4-steps-to-creating-a-human-centered-organization Learn More About Jeff Harry  https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/ https://twitter.com/jeffharryplays https://www.instagram.com/jeffharryplays/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeffharryplays/ https://www.youtube.com/jeffharryplays https://www.tiktok.com/@jeffharryplays Building Psychological Safety At Work https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/building-psychological-safety Solve Your Problem With Play https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/coaching Jeff’s Positive Psychology Playlist https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/playlist

What happens when our identity becomes so tightly intertwined with what we do? When we experience obstacles in our professional life, how do we deal with that loss of confidence?  This week in episode 2, we’re unraveling these questions in the context of Ted Lasso’s second season and unpacking what it means to be true to who you are, how to find comfort and encouragement in the people you trust, and why we have to be brave in moments of vulnerability.  As we discuss decoupling our identity as a professional from our identity as a person, we consider this question of security vs. success and how to balance and encourage the growth of both in a workspace.  “We talk a lot in the work that we do about wanting to create these psychologically safe spaces. We want to create spaces where people can show up and be themselves, and that’s what Ted has done. But at what point does that pendulum swing too far to the other end where it’s damaging the organization?” – Dimple (12:54)  In This Episode [4:15] Why it’s important for leaders to pay attention to the dynamics between their team members [11:27] How to separate your identity from your profession and also encourage success in your organization [17:40] How familial relationships influence the way we interact with others [22:14] Why we have to challenge our people to be the best versions of themselves  [35:17] How to balance supporting a team vs. the individual members [42:23] The Prince of Tides connection and how different people deal with pain [47:07] Key takeaways: fostering psychologically safe spaces while encouraging success and creating space for vulnerability Resources & Links Mentioned Every Person Who Got an Army Man and Its Meaning Brene Brown – The Man in the Arena Matthew Syed – The Greatest: The Quest for Sporting Perfection Why Prince of Tides is Dr. Sharon’s Favorite Book #WWTLD  https://www.wwtldpodcast.com/ https://twitter.com/wwtldpodcast/ https://www.facebook.com/wwtldpodcast/ https://www.instagram.com/wwtldpodcast/ Learn More About Dimple Dhabalia  https://www.rootsintheclouds.com/ https://twitter.com/dimpstory https://www.instagram.com/dimpstory/ https://www.facebook.com/dimpledhabalia https://www.linkedin.com/in/dimpledhabalia/ Why Radically Human Leadership Is More Important Than Ever  https://www.rootsintheclouds.com/blog/why-radically-human-leadership-is-more-important-than-ever 4 Steps to Creating A Human-Centered Organization https://www.rootsintheclouds.com/blog/004-4-steps-to-creating-a-human-centered-organization Learn More About Jeff Harry  https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/ https://twitter.com/jeffharryplays https://www.instagram.com/jeffharryplays/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeffharryplays/ https://www.youtube.com/jeffharryplays https://www.tiktok.com/@jeffharryplays Building Psychological Safety At Work https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/building-psychological-safety Solve Your Problem With Play https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/coaching Jeff’s Positive Psychology Playlist https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/playlist

Do the Right-est Thing

2023-01-0201:02:11

Whether in a leadership position or simply part of a team, sincerity is at the heart of functioning personal and professional dynamics. But what do we do when our gut prompts us to do something outside the norm?  Episode three, “Do The Rightest Thing,” adds a political element to the team's trials, and we see a moving display of unity and solidarity when one player stands up for what he believes in. In today’s episode, we explore finding the courage to push back, the tendency to people-please, what happens when we’re feeling lost, and why leaders must trust their team's training and ability to stand on their own.   “I think sometimes that ability as a leader to be able to recognize, ‘OK, I don’t have this particular gift, somebody else does, but that doesn’t mean I’m any less of a leader in this place. It just means I do things one way, and this person can help make this even stronger.’” – Dimple (30:05) We also discuss what it means to “do the right thing” for yourself and those around you and how these decisions can make waves, intended and unintended. As we head into the next week, we’re mulling over this question about following and trusting our intuition.  “That is the question for us listeners. What is the thing you’re struggling on where you feel like, ‘I need to do the right thing,’ and what is being communicated to you from your intuition?” – Jeff (58:16) In This Episode [1:16] What we’re willing to sacrifice for happiness and clarity [9:25] Developing sincerity and managing our people-pleasing tendencies  [16:23] Finding the courage to push back and sometimes say, ‘No’ [27:07] Why leaders sometimes have to step back and let their people fly  [36:50] The strength and drive of the younger generation and how leaders need to support these younger professionals [45:18] The importance of standing up for what you believe in  [51:20] The dynamic of the team shifts [55:19] Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing [59:35] Takeaways for the next week Resources & Links Mentioned  Spike Lee - Do the Right Thing The Amazing Tool That Women in the White House Used to Fight Gender Bias  #WWTLD  https://www.wwtldpodcast.com/ https://twitter.com/wwtldpodcast/ https://www.facebook.com/wwtldpodcast/ https://www.instagram.com/wwtldpodcast/ Learn More About Dimple Dhabalia  https://www.rootsintheclouds.com/ https://twitter.com/dimpstory https://www.instagram.com/dimpstory/ https://www.facebook.com/dimpledhabalia https://www.linkedin.com/in/dimpledhabalia/ Why Radically Human Leadership Is More Important Than Ever  https://www.rootsintheclouds.com/blog/why-radically-human-leadership-is-more-important-than-ever 4 Steps to Creating A Human-Centered Organization https://www.rootsintheclouds.com/blog/004-4-steps-to-creating-a-human-centered-organization Learn More About Jeff Harry  https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/ https://twitter.com/jeffharryplays https://www.instagram.com/jeffharryplays/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeffharryplays/ https://www.youtube.com/jeffharryplays https://www.tiktok.com/@jeffharryplays Building Psychological Safety At Work https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/building-psychological-safety Solve Your Problem With Play https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/coaching Jeff’s Positive Psychology Playlist https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/playlist

Carol of the Bells

2023-01-0956:01

It’s Christmastime in Lassoland, and in this week’s episode, we’re breaking down the fun Christmas references and heartwarming storylines happening with our favorite characters in “Carol of the Bells!” With callbacks to Love Actually, Christmas Story, Elf, and more, this episode of Ted Lasso explores the “Sexy Christmas” storyline with Keeley, Roy, and Phoebe, Christmas fun at the Higgins’ house, and Ted and Rebecca’s evening together. While some share meals and dishes from their cultures, others confront a bully in a kind way, and ultimately, they all adjust to the unique nature of their holidays away from home.  “Everyone feels seen. Not only does the character feel seen, but the actors feel seen in that moment… And I think a lot of times with anything that we do, a lot of times we’re like, ‘Well, I can’t be perfect, so I’m just not gonna mention it,’ but it’s like no – the trying is what matters.” – Jeff (26:44) In the glow of Christmas, the Ted Lasso characters share joy, forgiveness, comfort, and love as they juggle unconventional Christmases. It’s a lesson for all of us in managing expectations, finding the beauty in the unexpected and unplanned, and opening ourselves up to the magic of being in relationship with others.  In This Episode [3:46] Christmastime in Ted Lasso [10:38] The lengths we go to for the people we love   [21:05] Finding a home away from home during the holidays  [30:12] Embracing imperfection and spontaneity  [32:10] Rekindling belief and spirit  [38:38] How to look for magic when the world feels gray [52:10] Developing moments that matter and key takeaways  Resources & Links Mentioned  Ted Lasso – The Missing Christmas Mustache  In “Ted Lasso,” Higgins Delivers a Sweet Holiday Speech  #WWTLD  https://www.wwtldpodcast.com/ https://twitter.com/wwtldpodcast/ https://www.facebook.com/wwtldpodcast/ https://www.instagram.com/wwtldpodcast/ Learn More About Dimple Dhabalia  https://www.rootsintheclouds.com/ https://twitter.com/dimpstory https://www.instagram.com/dimpstory/ https://www.facebook.com/dimpledhabalia https://www.linkedin.com/in/dimpledhabalia/ Why Radically Human Leadership Is More Important Than Ever  https://www.rootsintheclouds.com/blog/why-radically-human-leadership-is-more-important-than-ever 4 Steps to Creating A Human-Centered Organization https://www.rootsintheclouds.com/blog/004-4-steps-to-creating-a-human-centered-organization Learn More About Jeff Harry  https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/ https://twitter.com/jeffharryplays https://www.instagram.com/jeffharryplays/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeffharryplays/ https://www.youtube.com/jeffharryplays https://www.tiktok.com/@jeffharryplays Building Psychological Safety At Work https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/building-psychological-safety Solve Your Problem With Play https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/coaching Jeff’s Positive Psychology Playlist https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/playlist

We’re inching toward the heart of the season with this episode, “Rainbow,” and it’s following in the last episode's footsteps with more profound social and leadership themes.  In this episode, we’re breaking down microaggressions in the workplace, the transition to a leadership role, how to balance assertiveness and humility, and the importance of being aware of other leaders in your organization. We also explore “doing” vs. “being” and how to approach dark seasons without avoiding unresolved or negative feelings.  We also go on to discuss the challenge of owning your authority around others, stepping into your sense of self, how the leaders we trust can aid us in this process, how to develop confidence through compassion, and why we have to embrace the spirit of play in a world of work.  “It’s all about play, and it’s all about remembering the joy in the thing you’re doing. The Signal

Relationships can be beautiful but messy. Ted Lasso is a show that highlights this idea in a relatable way. This week’s episode, “The Signal,” is jam-packed with storylines and interesting dynamics with our favorite characters. In this episode, we’re breaking down several powerful themes within the storylines and character interactions, such as coming into your own as a leader, finding a balance between external success and internal satisfaction, and the Roy Kent effect.  We also go on to discuss the process of helping people overcome their limiting beliefs so they can show up as the best version of themselves, the different methods people have for dealing with emotions, the dynamics of modern male friendships, and the influence your family dynamics have on your relationships later in life.  “ It takes two people to create a pattern, but only one to change it. Headspace

2023-01-3001:02:17

This week, we jump into Season 2, Episode 7 of Ted Lasso, “Headspace.” In this episode, we look at where several of our characters are in their own headspace and how they got there.  Some of the main areas of discussion include breaking down and exploring themes of trauma in various forms, setting boundaries in life and relationships, what self-care really looks like, and the role of assertiveness in leadership.  We also explore the need for external validation, how striving for perfection is in vain, how our inherent negativity bias impacts our confidence, how toxic behavior can be contagious, and how leaders can help people co-regulate their nervous systems and get out of a reactive state.  “I think there are a lot of leaders out there that are strong leaders that don’t… you know, like how Rebecca was saying in, I think, two episodes ago about how you don’t have to yell. You just have to be assertive. And so I think there’s a lot of leaders who areassertive and they’re good at what they do, and they’re strong without having to be mean.” – Dimple (4:31) In This Episode [1:14] Dimple and Jeff’s thoughts on the episode [4:27] What does it mean to be a strong leader - an analysis of Nate [9:15] Chasing approval, consistent external validation, and the pursuit of happiness [13:16] Toxic workplaces and the contagiousness of toxic behavior [20:49] Ted in therapy: the many shapes trauma can take [30:05] Self-care can be scary - it’s not all bubble baths and spa days [39:12] Stop auditioning your complaints!  [41:17] People tend to give advice to others that they should take for themselves  [42:10] How trauma can inform romantic relationships [50:12] Most relationships are not like fairytales [54:04] It can be scary to put yourself out there   [58:58] Dimple’s and Jeff’s takeaways for the week and for life Resources & Links Mentioned  Roy Is Sorry For Not Understanding Keeley Playlist Patrice O’Neal “The Da Vinci Code” Doomscrolling  Negativity Bias  Social Contagion Clear is Kind - Brené Brown  #WWTLD  https://www.wwtldpodcast.com/ https://twitter.com/wwtldpodcast/ https://www.facebook.com/wwtldpodcast/ https://www.instagram.com/wwtldpodcast/ Learn More About Dimple Dhabalia  https://www.rootsintheclouds.com/ https://twitter.com/dimpstory https://www.instagram.com/dimpstory/ https://www.facebook.com/dimpledhabalia https://www.linkedin.com/in/dimpledhabalia/ Why Radically Human Leadership Is More Important Than Ever  https://www.rootsintheclouds.com/blog/why-radically-human-leadership-is-more-important-than-ever 4 Steps to Creating A Human-Centered Organization https://www.rootsintheclouds.com/blog/004-4-steps-to-creating-a-human-centered-organization Learn More About Jeff Harry  https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/ https://twitter.com/jeffharryplays https://www.instagram.com/jeffharryplays/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeffharryplays/ https://www.youtube.com/jeffharryplays https://www.tiktok.com/@jeffharryplays Building Psychological Safety At Work https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/building-psychological-safety Solve Your Problem With Play https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/coaching Jeff’s Positive Psychology Playlist https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/playlist

Man City

Vulnerability can be scary; it's hard to be vulnerable, even if you know you have a “safe space” in which to be vulnerable. This episode of Ted Lasso emphasizes this idea in a relatable way. This week’s episode, “Man City,” is jam-packed with storylines and interesting dynamics with our favorite characters. In this episode, we’re breaking down several powerful themes, such as relationships between fathers and sons, understanding our influence on others, and the importance of vulnerability for creating connections.  We also go on to discuss the intersections of leadership and relationships on and off the soccer pitch, the power of healthy male relationships, the detrimental effects of toxic masculinity, and how loneliness manifests in unexpected places and in unexpected ways. “You never know what is happening for other people. Beard After Hours

2023-02-1301:10:131

Have you ever noticed that we often make assumptions about people based on the briefest of interactions with them. We jump to conclusions about who they are and why they behave a certain way without having the full story.  The reality is that most people are walking around wearing a mask and just trying to survive, and we have no idea what’s actually happening in their life.  Think of tWitch, Robin Williams, Anthony Bourdain, and Chester Bennington to name a few. All of these people were known for something specific - and when they passed, we learned there was much about them kept in the shadows because they felt pressured to be what the world perceived them to be. This week’s episode is jam-packed with symbolism, reminding us that things aren’t always what they seem. Here, we’re breaking down several powerful themes, including the impact of the inner critic and how it shows up in our lives, feeling lost and the masks we wear to protect ourselves, and how toxic relationships can make their way into our lives. We also discuss the value of being able to “unmask” oneself, the complexities of human interaction that lead people to suffer in silence, the idea of having access to people, and the desire to belong. “You can’t be another way because I only know you this way, and I expect only this from you. I expect Ted Lasso - happiness, joy, and none of this weird stuff- and it’s just like, you gotta let people be more than just one aspect of themselves, you know? And I think we need to embrace that more because that’s just a healthier…you know, coming from a positive psychology way of allowing all the feelings to show up.” – Jeff (09:48) In This Episode [2:49] Recap of “Beard After Hours” and the themes that came up [15:21] All about Beard: highlighting the “inner critic”  [18:02] The symbolism of the keys [22:33] The idea of access explored  [30:44] The ideas of “Othering” and “Belonging” [35:26] The perks and drawbacks of being in a relationship and being single [41:47] Another theme addressed: consistently asking for help [44:02] The struggle of dealing with your inner critic’s insults [48:43] Exploring Beard and Jane: the dynamics of toxic relationships  [55:35] Exploring the idea that there is no deeper level to some people  [1:00:05] The relationship you have vs. the relationship you want with someone [1:02:44] Is Jane good for Beard? No Weddings and a Funeral

2023-02-2001:07:30

This week, we dive into episode 10 - No Weddings and a Funeral and explore the concept of death and grief; the ritual of celebrating those who have passed on; how we as humans react to loss of life; how an occasion of sadness can also bring moments of joy and more pertinently, how the characters in the episode portrayed these emotions both as givers and receivers.  Listen as Jeff and Dimple draw from their own experiences as they reflect on the episode. Jeff talks about losing his father and meeting some family members for the very first time. Moreover, Dimple talks about her complex relationship with her dad and how she realized that in order to forgive and find compassion, she had to remember the good things and let go of hanging on to the bad. “In this country, I feel like we have no real ritual around death. You think about a lot of cultures. I know in my culture, the Hindu culture. You look at Mexico with the day of the dead and like so many other places I know that really celebrate the lives that people led and honor the ancestors. And even especially here like Native American communities, Indigenous communities, you see a lot of rituals around death. It’s just awkward here for most people. People don’t want to talk about it. They don’t know how to talk about it, especially in the workplace. – Dimple (02:30) In This Episode [01:30] Jeff and Dimple recap the episode “No Weddings and a Funeral”. [02:30] Dimple’s take on the concept of death. [10:10] On moments of levity in the episode in comparison to the heaviness of the topic. [18:20] On having fun at funerals and how a time of loss can become an occasion of joy. [20:37] Are there rules or a script on how to behave at a funeral? [23:00] Talking about Rebecca and Ted’s complex relationship and feelings for their dad. [24:10] Conversation shifts to Ted and Sharon. [25:02] Dimple talks about 4-7-8 breathing and box breathing. [34:32] Dimple talks about her complex relationship with her dad. [39:51] Discussing Rebecca and her mother’s stance on her father cheating. [40:45] Dimple talks about how our parents shape our perception. [43:52] Talking about the Eulogy and the singing scene. [50:20] Jeff on appreciating the imperfections of people to build real relationships. [52:10] On how grief can be isolating yet everyone at the funeral supports Rebecca by singing. Midnight Train to Royston

2023-02-2701:07:51

This week we dive into Season 2 Episode 11 - Midnight Train to Royston. Jam packed with so many unfinished storylines, this episode gave Jeff and Dimple a lot to talk about!   The arrival of a Ghanaian billionaire looking to dismantle colonialism one football player at a time. Nate’s misreading of so many situations. Roy and Keeley trying to grow into their own even as they do the work to stay together. Ted and Dr. Sharon’s final moments together. Trent Crimm’s decision to buck ethics in favor of protecting someone he’s grown to respect. It’s ego, passion, love, and betrayal, all packed into a heavy hitting episode that left Jeff and Dimple with a lot of unresolved questions. Check out the episode to hear Jeff and Dimple as they reflect on the episode’s development. Dimple talks about the five ways our nervous system reacts when it is activated and compares those reactions with the events and dialogues unfolding throughout the episode and much more!  “When I think about ego, ego is one of those things, like in my work I talk about the five ways that we react when our nervous system is activated. Fight or flight. Fight, flight, freeze which we are all familiar with. Fix and then something called Fake. And fake is the one where we double down, and we pretend. We do everything we can to show people that we have power. That we are perfectionists or we’re perfect in what we are doing and we don’t need help. All these things. So to me, this is very much like this ego is really like Nate’s fight or flight response to me.” Dimple – (55:28) In This Episode [03:35] Dimple’s take on watching Edwin Akufo. [05:54] The idea of the African billionaire. [10:48] On Dimple not liking the ending of the episode. [12:50] Listen to your gut and check-in with your heart. [13:20] Jeff on the second doorknob drop and understanding what your voice is saying. [16:15] The ability to hear our own opinion amid the noise. [17:40] Focusing on what’s clear, not what’s foggy. [37:25] The Good Will Hunting reference.  [41:00] Final storyline and all about Nate. [42:40] On Nate kissing Keeley. [55:30] Dimple’s take on ego and the 5 ways we react. [1:00:25] Discussing the tree analogy by Beard. [1:03:09] Nate’s betrayal of Ted. [1:03:25] Jeff puts himself in Ted’s shoes and talks about abandonment. Smells Like Mean Spirit

2023-05-0101:07:13

We’re back!! Today we launch a brand-new season of What Would Ted Lasso Do? and like the team, which goes deep underground to learn some lessons, so too did we dive deep into the first episode of Season 3, Smells Like Mean Spirit.  In this week’s episode, Dimple and Jeff explore the crisis each character is experiencing as we move into the next phase of the show. Everything from Rebecca’s personal crisis and Roy’s crisis of confidence to Keeley’s leadership crisis, Nate’s identity crisis, and Ted’s existential crisis - the driving force behind his actions this season. We also explore the challenges the team is facing with the negative rhetoric and the fine line between self-deprecating humor and self-judgment, and so much more! The episode is packed with so many storylines and themes and sets us up beautifully for the season ahead! “So, this is again why I keep defending Nate’s humanity because we talked about all the microaggressions he experienced last season, the subtle acts of exclusions. But he also had a lot of over-bullying over the entire course of his time there, even before Ted got there. So, all that stuff has played into who he has become. Again, hurt people hurt people and so we can see why he reacts this way. (Dimple 43:06) In This Episode [02:09] Jeff and Dimple giving their initial remarks on Season 3, Episode 1. [09:01] Reflecting on Ted’s thinking and how winning can corrupt. [11:50] Rebecca’s personal crisis and ambition to beat Rupert and Ted’s swearing. What do second chances plus curiosity equal? Pure magic! And pure magic is exactly what we get as we dive into episode 2 - I (Don’t Want to Go to) Chelsea where Dimple and Jeff continue our exploration of this season’s overarching theme of facing our fears. In addition, we talk about origin stories, the impact of regrets, and our favorite theme of all -  just being human. Episode 2 is rich with examples of brave leadership and accountability as we watch several of our main characters step up and engage in tough conversations rather than putting them off. This episode also highlights how our mindset can make us or break us as we contrast the limiting, albeit protective power of the inner critic with two little words that can provide us with an opportunity to change our trajectory in life and make new choices.   “I think the term ‘not yet’ is so powerful because with anything if you add the word “yet” at the end of it - there are so many things in our life that I may not be good at this - yet - but I have the capacity to practice or do whatever to shift that. It’s this way of shifting our mindset a little bit.” (Dimple 45:20) In This Episode [03:20] Keeley’s dynamic with the CFO. [10:00] Ted bringing Trent into the team.  [11:00] Zava’s real-life counterpart Swedish star Zlatan. [13:10) The two overarching themes that in the episode. [17:35] Jamie’s growth arc in the show. [19:10] On the expression of empathy. [28:11] Keeley’s confidence and standing in her leadership with curiosity. [33:08] Trent and Roy’s history and origin stories.  [35:50] Recalling Chelsea's locker room scene and Trent walking in. [40:35] Dimple elaborates on the idea of the inner critic. [45:20] The power of “not yet” and how it relates to having a growth mindset. [50:01] Rebecca’s origin story and being groomed by a narcissist.. [56:45] Letting go of results. 4-5-1

2023-05-1501:07:32

This week as we dive into episode 3, “4-5-1” we consider how we can learn to embrace the flaws and create something more beautiful in a given situation. How we can find the nugget of good or inspiration when things feel hard? This week Dimple and Jeff continue to dive into the theme of embracing our fears as they explore Colin’s truth and Rebecca’s deepest desires, and why we over me is an effective strategy. They talk about the pedestals we put people when we’re unsure of ourselves, and how in the midst of our fear and insecurity we’ll often go in search of the familiar to feel safe. This is yet another episode jam packed with so much! “Sometimes there is this sense that if I give people an opportunity to speak their minds I have to do what they’re saying. I’m working with a new coaching client and she said ‘I have a really hard time with collaboration and actually being a leader because if I ask my staff for input then I have to do what they say. How does that make me a leader?’ and I love that [question] because it’s a very real line we have to walk sometimes.” Dimple - (25:18) In This Episode [03:07] Foreboding joy [08:04 ] Decoupling self-worth from our work [09:25] The stigma of being LGBTQ+ in professional sports [15:17] Zava’s introduction to Richmond [22:10] We over me [24:22] Psychological safety [40:34] The Padawan [40:59] The ethics of Ted’s wife’s new love interest [44:02] The fine line between research and stalking [47:34] Ted’s panic attack during Zava’s first goal [50:51] Ted Lasso’s use of the woo - psychics, ghosts, astrology and how it relates to intuition [57:35] Things get better with time [1:00:24] Keeley hires her friend to work for her. Big Week

2023-05-2201:17:47

This week we jump into episode 4 - Big Week - and boy, was it ever! As the Greyhounds head to West Ham to take on Nate’s new team, everyone’s a bit off their game, and it shows.
