We’ll look at the different topics from different generational perspectives as my daughters, a Millennial and a Gen Z, will join me, a Boomer, from time to time. The key work is practice...WE invite compassion into our lives when we act compassionately toward ourselves and others, and we feel connected in our lives when we reach out and connect.""Hope is a function of struggle. We develop hope not during the easy or comfortable times, but through adversity and thebelief that we can create change.""Faith isn’t an agreement to a set of beliefs, it’s a place of mystery where we find the courage to believe in whatwe cannot see and the strength to let go of our fear of uncertainty." “Hope fuels action.” “Hope and faith balance out and build resilience.” Three Episode Takeaways: 1.   When we’re not in alignment and there’s zero balance, that’s when things can get really chaotic. One way to view segments in life are as chapters and each chapter informs the next. Without those previous chapters we wouldn’t havegotten those life’s lessons.2.   When people connect it can facilitate community. It allows people to open up. In-person events engage all senses providing more depth of a connection. It’s a whole different energy.3.   Events have 3 core elements: the design, the planning, and execution. Most of us feel good about 1 of these things. The way a host gets people comfortable is by exuding confidence that all of the elements are handled. What You’ll Learn in This Episode: 0:00 Introduction1:39 Trends in Women in the Workplace Today4:24 Owning our own motivation, values, whatdrives us6:43 Yellow stickies9:48 Employment brand (way you show up ininterviews) and Candidate experience11:37 Interview tips 12:24 Acing your interview18:46 Tony Robbins example20:06 Practice example25:02 What Jenn would tell her 20-something selfQuotable Moments:“We fought so hard and it doesn’t feel like fulfillment at the end of the day.” “The power really comes from owning it yourself.” “The only way to bring the electricity (energy) is if you’re filled up.” “The struggle for women is that we want to ace everything and we’re crushing it…we can forget to balance.” “Sustainable high-achievement” (Hannah Abad) is what we’re all looking for but we need to flip the funnel.” “You do not need to be the smartest in the room – you need to be resourceful and bring the energy.” “Fear is a really good motivator but it’s also exhausting.” “Letting the outside circumstances dictate your brand, when it’s really an internal thing at the top of the funnel (what is your identity), can derail us.” “We’re all interviewing every day.”  “Interviewing is a skill.”“Clear is kind.”Three Episode Takeaways:1.    Key trends include that women are stepping upand there are more women in leadership seats. Another trend Jenn sees is the burnout and exiting (“The Great Breakup”) at record pace. She states havingwomen at the table is important to make good business decisions that represent women in most customer bases. 2.    Knowing our personal values and what drives us can fill our cup. Bringing the energy or electricity and knowing what fills us up, allows us to show up as leaders we want to be. Keyis flipping the funnel and starting with our identity and ending with our work at the narrow part of the funnel, instead of making your work 80% of the funnel. Let’shear it for yellow stickies!3.    In addition to bringing on the energy, being able to communicate detail in 3 min or less about what wedo, and stating the financial impact can lead to success in an interview. Special Offer:25% off offer for the Ace Your Interview Coursehttps://courses.jrecruitingservices.com/offers/e79ydjmb/checkout?coupon_code=GTTL25Use the code GTTL25 when registering.  Episode Resource: Personal branding free workbooks:https://girltaketheleadpod.com/time-to-podcast Ep. 52 Personal Branding: Can’t Leave Home without One – Let’s Craft Yours!https://spotifycreators-web.app.link/e/r3BBmmTsuSb How to reach Jenn:info@jrecruitingservices.com https://www.linkedin.com/company/jrecruitingservices/?viewAsMember=true(Company page)  https://www.linkedin.com/in/jenn-hahn-5698b66a/(Jenn’s page) https://www.facebook.com/JRecruitingServices  How to reach Yo:  Our website:www.girltaketheleadpod.com You can send a messageor voicemail there. Tara Landes, GenX, has been the secret weapon hundreds ofsmall businesses leaders have used as they solve operational challenges for over 25 years. She is a certified change management practitioner from The Prosci Institute and a licensed influence trainer from The Cialdini Institute. She is also the lead faculty member for the Bellrock management training programs, which are unique in both methods and results. In this episode she brings her expertise in influencing others with grounded research and such enjoyable storytelling. She breaks down the psychology of influence using research-backed insights from Dr. Robert Cialdini, Daniel Kahneman, and Daniel Pink. Note: When we talk about influence in this episode, we mean ethical influence—using psychology to guide decisions responsibly, not manipulate. What You’ll Learn in This Episode:0:00 Intro1:06 Influence & Persuasion 2:28 Influencers5:52 Robert Cialdini Book Overview7:08 Reciprocity12:15 Sales14:23 Liking17:04 Authority19:37 GenZ Cynicism20:40 Kahneman’s System 1 and System 224:30 Consistency27:47 ScarcityQuotable Moments:*Influencers are using different aspects of the practice ofinfluence.”“The law of reciprocity states that if I give yousomething, you feel obligated to give me something back.”“There is power in making a concession.”“In my household if I have a way to make people say yes tome more often, my life is a little bit better….and their lives are a little bit better when get me to say yes.” “Before you do business with someone, build some rapport.” “When we’re teaching about influence, we’re teaching aboutusing it for good.”“Now is a difficult time for all sorts of things. It is hardto know who to trust. Our traditional go-to way of making decisions is really being upended.”“Most of what we do is on auto-pilot.”“Consistency is about having other people that you’reworking with agree to smaller things because they’ll agree to something larger to be consistent…we like to feel internally consistent.”“Scarcity is when people want something they’re afraidthey’ll miss getting.”“It takes a really long time to find friends, so find yourpeople and stay in touch.” Three Episode Takeaways: 1.   Influence is broader and persuasion is narrower – Influence is what we do to nudge people along overtime. Persuasion is a subset of that where we’re actually getting someone to take an action. Influencers use social proof and authority when we are uncertain about what to do.2.   The 7 common aspects of influence Dr. Cialdini found universal: reciprocity, liking, authority, consistency, scarcity, social proof and unity. Many times we don’t realize how we’re being influenced. 3.   41% of our day is spent selling what we’re trying to accomplish. We also like to do business with people we like so figure out what we have in-common to connect.Upcoming Event:Next cohort begins in May.Registration is now open.https://bellrock.ca/our-training/management-training/  Episode Resource: Robert Cialdini’s Book: Influencehttps://amazon.comDaniel Khaneman https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/economic-sciences/2002/kahneman/biographical/ To Sell is Human, Daniel S. What can each of us do to change the trajectory of people we lead.2.   We’re asking change makers a lot: declaration as a change maker and know who you are (personal brand) at the core of your being and how it plays out in the changes we’re trying to make. Vulnerability can be scary but necessary in making change but communicating our uncomfortableness can help us overcome the fear and find acceptance.3.   The Economist research found that for every child a woman has her salary decreases by approximately 4% while a man’s income increases by 6% by becoming a father. There is a motherhood penalty. Also 1.5% of women are more likely to leave a job for another for more flexibility than a title. This experienceis designed to help clients replace subconscious thought habits that are no longer serving them with more healthy ones. It canaffect how we relate to others, dream, and impact our goals. About 98% of entrepreneurs are obsessive thinkers. They need more breaks to give our brain a rest so we’re not so attached to our ideas and get too far ahead of others around us.2    Knowing our “natural genius” can be tougher for women. It feels easy to you but astonishes others. It’s hard to see it in ourselves because it’s something we just do. Because of this we can sometimes undervalue it.3    The “6 Most Important” list what if I don’t get anything else done, these 6 things anchor us and they create growth, change or progress. I knew theanswers already.”“The biggest tool that helped me was a forgivenesspractice. I could then work on other elements like being aware of my thoughts.” Three Episode Takeaways: 1.   Resilience can come down to our self-belief and trusting our journey is happening for a reason. When youaccept you can’t control situations, that’s when resilience helps you move forward. 2.   Once we can clear the limiting beliefs we’re unstoppable. There’s no ego in place.3.   Thoughts can affect us and our physical wellbeing. Rachel Burr, Gen X, author of Butterfly Goo:TheDown and Dirty Truth About Transformation, joins us to talk transformation. Rachel is an executive coach, leadership consultant, and people expert. She says, "... leadership is challenging because people are challenging, and leaders are people. When we add the challenges of leading groups of other people, developing a workplace culture, and driving success, we increase the difficulty by tenfold, even a hundredfold. (Is there an infinite fold?) Let’s just say it’s complex.Leadership is not easy or for the faint of heart. Still, most leaders land themselves in their roles because they’re individual rockstars, not because they know how to lead people, and they need support to thrive. " What You’ll Learn in This Episode: The beauty myth about transformationTransformation can be funPurpose and transformationTransformation definedFear and transformationSocial media and the gooCave analogy (Joseph Campbell) Quotable Moments:“If we make transformation more actionable, more achievable, then everyone can see their butterfly and not feel stuck.” “We’ll never know what we’re truly capable of until we try.” “You don’t find your path – you build it.” “If I have seen further than others, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.” (Sir Issac Newton) “Safe and happy are not the same thing.” “Sometimes we talk about the comfortable discomfort – the devil we know vs the devil we don’t.” “Look for the intersection of what excites and scares you – there’s something there. Goo in that direction.” “You don’t have to be ready for every kind of transformation.”  Three Episode Takeaways: 1.   Most of us don’t have a linear path and setting an expectation that life should be like that, can setus up for denial of agency in our own life. 2.   Transformation is personal to each of us. We get to define it for ourselves. It’s both empowering and terrifying we need to take ownership. 3.   Fear is ever-present in our lives and a normal part of change. It wants to keep us small. And if we wait until we’re not afraid to do X then we can miss becoming more confident when we actually put those things into practice.   Episode Resource: Butterfly Goo, The Down and Dirty Truth About TransformationAvailable at https://amazon.com More About Rachel: Rachel has worked with leaders, organizations, and understanding human behavior for over 20 years. Shebelieves most (read as “none”) of us have unlocked our full potential. And when she says our full potential, she means the unique combination of strengths, talents, and passions that make each of us who we are. Leadership is not acookie cutter. When we embrace and develop our leadership from our authentic core, we step into our full power to create impact and achieve success for ourselves, our organizations, and the people we lead. She works together with leaders to honestly examine what they bring to their role, including strengths, weaknesses, values, and everything in between. She helps them toconfront challenges they must overcome, and identify actions they will take to reach their goals. Susan L Combs, Gen X, is the founder of Pancakes for Roger, Inc., a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to serving those who have served our nation. She joins us today to talk about the non-profit that emerged from a humble request by Susan’s father, the late Major General Roger E Combs, during his Hospice care. His simple wish for pancakes sparked a movement, which became a book and a keynote address. Now, it stands as a non-profit organization. While the pancakes themselves couldn't be served due to care constraints, the essence of his request transcended the breakfast table. It's a touching reminder to cherish life's small joys and express gratitude for them. In 2005, Susan L Combs embarked on her entrepreneurial path, founding Combs & Company at the ageof 26. Combs & Company has evolved into a trusted ally for businesses that diverge from the conventional profiles favored by insurance carriers, catering particularly to sectors like entertainment, food, and international companiesestablishing operations in the U.S. What You’ll Learn in This Episode: Susan’s background for her book and why she wrote her bookThe 3 facets of life.Monetary worth.Elements of a good relationship.Seeing signs.February is pancake month. Quotable Moments:“Have some pancakes for Roger and remember all the blessings in your life.”“If is helped you in your life, it’ll help someone in their life, too.”“No is a complete sentence.”“My plate is as full as I like it.”“Nothing wrong withsaying no to someone to say yes to yourself.” Three Episode Takeaways: 1. There are 3 facets of life Susan’s dad offered that can make an impact: The person you’re with The thing you do for a living The place you liveAnd if you’re happy with 3 out of 3 or 2 out of3, you’re living the golden life but if you’re only happy with 1 or none of those things, you’re the only person that can change it. 2.   Susan encourages all of us to know our worth and when it’s time to walk away. She’s talking about our monetary worth per hour to help us determine your working hour. Saying no is so much easier because you know the cost.3.  At the end of the day, all women need to know they’re enough. Dima Ghawi, Gen X, joins us for this episode. She is Middle Eastern in her genes, American in her heart, and a global citizen in her spirit. She ignites the untapped potential in individuals across the globe, empowering them to shatter limitations and become courageous, purpose driven leaders. Her own journey is one of escaping confinement, crossing continents, and transforming her life’s purpose. Harnessing the power of her story, Dima is committed to inspiring individuals to attain personal and professional growth.   Topics Covered: Challenging the norm Education as a way to shatter vases Healing and rising above Following our feelings, heart   Episode Takeaways   1.   We all have broken vases and there’s beauty in the imperfection with purpose to it. A vase is the expectation that we live our life perfectly and thinking something is wrong with us if we think differently. 2. If we don’t challenge the norm we’ll just pass along the same ways of being or “chains” and miss opportunities for growth. When we challenge we can shatter our vase and rebuild ourselves. 3. We have the power to rise above and not stay small – we need to let go of the chains. We can start with a vision and keep playing it in our head to help make it a reality. It’s important to select the people we surround ourselves and watch the self-talk to be intentional and heal.   Card or Gift Item Dima Liked from Our Store https://girltaketheleadpod.com/shop     Brave Butterfly – With Brave Wings She Flies   More About Dima: Through keynote speeches, workshops, and executive coaching, Dima shares her unique leadership transformation journey to motivate and activate those around her to reimagine their potential, grow into leaders, and create inclusive corporate cultures.   Episode Resources: Breaking Vases: Shattering Limitations & Daring to Thrive - A Middle Eastern Woman's Story  https://amazon.com Ep. 139, Powering Up Your Leadership: Exploring Energy Levels with Brandy Mabra https://spotifycreators-web.app.link/e/s2GvYEsnLPb   Ep. 140, From victim to Creator: A Deep Dive into the book, Energy Leadership by Bruce D. After navigating her own life-altering crisis, Kate combined her academic expertise, entrepreneurial success, and personal resilience to create a unique coaching practice. She specializes in helping high-achieving leaders turn their most challenging moments into opportunities for growth and transformation. Topics Covered:     Post Traumatic Growth        Defining Crisis and Trauma·         The Body Keeps the Score    Trauma statistics & symptoms        EMDR benefits     IFS (Internal Family System)      Healing & different options   3 Episode Takeaways 1. Post Traumatic Growth is an individual’s ability to grow and transform following major struggles but continue to grow and transform – “what doesn’t kill you can make you stronger” with a properly set table. Resilience is one’s ability to bounce back to baseline after something challenging happens. 2. Crisis is the external experience and there are two types: with a “C” easily identifiable and requires immediate action, and those with a “c” that are slow burning, less identifiable, and can sometimes trigger bigger feelings. Trauma is our internal experience and lives in our bodies - they can cause crisis situations or over-react to situations. Crisis and trauma can be intertwined. 3. Based on the statistics from the book The Body Keeps The Score there are many of us walking around with unresolved trauma and may not know it. EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) is one powerful way to “unearth” what’s going on in our bodies to help identify the triggers to unearth traumas to work through the experiences to get closure. A Statista Consumer Insights survey of 1,050 U.S. residents revealed that the top response regarding resolutions for 2025 was surprising: 4 in 10 respondents stated they do not plan to make any resolutions for the upcoming year. Why might that be? It’s not too surprising, considering that research shows only 9-12% of people actually keep their New Year’s resolutions. So what does work? A 2022 study found that setting daily intentions improved focus and emotional regulation in 73% of participants. With that in mind, this episode will explore why resolutions often fall short—and how they differ from goals and intentions.   Plus we’ll look into Gabby Bernstein’s book, The Universe Has You Back, to understand how fear can also get in the way of achieving our dreams even with the perfect plan. The 3 Episode Takeaways: 1.   Goals provide structure, resolutions inspire change, and intentions ground us in trust and purpose. Together, they form a balanced and holistic approach to personal growth. 2.   Gabby Bernstein’s wisdom: “When we release fear and align with love, our intentions effortlessly manifest into reality.” 3.   Gabby’s insight: Joy is our birthright, but we block it when we separate ourselves from love. We do this by giving purpose to pain, seeking power outside ourselves, and placing our faith in fear instead of love. Reconnecting with love restores our joy and aligns us with the Universe.   Resources The Universe Has Your Back: Transform Fear to Faith by Gabrielle Bernstein https://amazon.com   Ep. 51, Intentions v Resolutions with help from Jay Shetty’s book: Think Like a Monk, Train Your Mind for Peace and Purpose Every Day https://spotifycreators-web.app.link/e/J1jN4NfHsPb   Ep. 70, Let’s Keep Digging into Habits with Atomic Habits by James Clear https://spotifycreators-web.app.link/e/WLNs0ZtnLPb   Ep. 163, Rethinking Grit: Embracing Quit with Nicole Trick Steinbach https://spotifycreators-web.app.link/e/l5UwfrsnLPb "Why Setting Intentions is More Effective Than Resolutions" - Psychology Today https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/a-different-lens/202212/better-than-a-resolution-try-a-new-years-intention “America’s most popular New Year’s resolutions for 2025” https://www.ajc.com/things-to-do/most-popular-new-years-resolutions-for-2025-in-us/WQ55E76N3NCG5ENB5ARKGE7EQA/#:~:text=According%20to%20YouGov%2C%20an%20international,the%20top%20resolution%20among%20respondents. With the news of President Jimmy Carter’s passing, I felt it was important to pause and reflect on the legacy of this extraordinary man. To honor him, I’m replaying an episode I did in October of this year dedicated to his life and contributions. Melinda French Gates beautifully captured his essence when she said: “One of my favorite teachings says: ‘To know that even one life has breathed easier because you lived, this is to have succeeded.’ We honor President Carter by remembering that because of him, life is healthier, better, and safer—not just for one life, but for millions.” President Carter’s legacy goes far beyond his time in the White House. His humanitarian work, unwavering commitment to peace, and dedication to uplifting others have inspired generations. On a personal note, I’ve always thought of him as the Rock ‘n Roll President—a leader with a rhythm and authenticity all his own. As we remember him today, let’s celebrate the compassion, humility, and humanity he brought to the world. I hope this replay reminds us of how one person’s courage and kindness can ripple across millions of lives.   Topics Covered: President Carter’s key accomplishments in and out of office Why Jimmy Carter is the Rock ‘n Roll President Carter’s friendship with musicians A marketing innovator when it came to campaign events His quotes about leadership Here are 3 takeaways from our episode:   1. Jimmy Carter certainly deserves to be called the Rock ‘n Roll president. He saw music as the one thing we all have in common no matter where live.   2. Jimmy inspires us to have faith, do what we believe to be right, no matter how much others may see as ‘inappropriate’.   3. While some will not look kindly on his time as President, he is an inspiring, decent human being. Thank you, Mr. President, for all you have done. I am grieving our loss. Ziem Nguyen Neubert, Executive Director of Project Cornerstone at the YMCA of Silicon Valley, joins us to discuss the topic of loneliness. Ziem leads an amazing team, working with school and community partners to support youth social and emotional well-being. Over 20 years of experience in education – serving as a teacher, coordinator, assistant principal, and principal – has been instrumental in supporting her work in building relationships and driving the vision for Project Cornerstone. Ziem is passionate about fostering positive skills, relationships, experiences, and honest conversations to create safe, caring, and equitable communities in Silicon Valley and beyond. Today, Project Cornerstone works with over 180 schools, reaching 62,000 students annually with the help of over 4,000 volunteers. Topics Covered:     Loneliness defined Social media connectedness and loneliness Misconceptions around loneliness Friendships and different kinds of connections 3 ways we take care of ourselves: assess, plan, act   3     Episode Takeaways   1.   We may not want to get rid of loneliness – if we never experience sadness how will we experience joy? It’s also a way to kick ourselves into gear and take some action when we notice it. It’s chronic loneliness we need to watch for.   2.   Social media isn’t all bad but may not be as meaningful to us as a way to connect with others. It’s the choices we make. While the social tools can assist us in connecting and be convenient/fast, we have the choice to connect this way or pick up the phone or make a plan to visit someone. 3.   There are a number of misconceptions around loneliness: like quantity matters, to feel lonely isn’t normal, we should feel shameful if we get lonely, loneliness only happens to “old” people, and introverts are lonelier than extroverts (we all need along alone time to recharge). Friendship is a key way to address loneliness but it’s good to assess, plan, and take action when choosing friends.   Ziem’s Resources The BIG document – report: “Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation – The U.S. Surgeon General’s Advisory on the Healing Effects of Social Connection and Community”       https://www.hhs.gov/sites/default/files/surgeon-general-social-connection-advisory.pdf   “US surgeon general Vivek Murthy: ‘Loneliness is like hunger, a signal we’re lacking something for survival’” (January 29, 2024) https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2024/jan/29/us-surgeon-general-vivek-murthy-loneliness-mental-health-epidemic-social-media   “New Surgeon General Advisory Raises Alarm about the Devastating Impact of the Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation in the United States” (May 3, 2023)      https://www.hhs.gov/about/news/2023/05/03/new-surgeon-general-advisory-raises-alarm-about-devastating-impact-epidemic-loneliness-isolation-united-states.html “Loneliness Among Teens Has Increased Over the Years Violence, depression, and radicalization realities are telling.” (May 30, 2022)    https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/cultural-neuroscience/202205/loneliness-among-teens-has-increased-over-the-years   Card or Gift Items Ziem Liked from Our Store https://girltaketheleadpod.com/shop       Lotus Heart with the sentiment: “I carry your heart with me – I carry it in my heart”  e.e. cummings.     How to reach Ziem:   LinkedIn account: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ziem-neubert/ eMail: ziem@projectcornerstone.org Website: www.projectcornerstone.org You can make a donation there. So today we’ll talk a bit about procrastination during the holidays and its link to stress and overwhelm. Yeah, I know, I can see your eyes rolling and you’re saying: Really, Yo? Do we have to understand this, right now? I don’t really have the time! And that’s the point, you guys. Just listening to this might open up some space for you to be calmer and more peaceful. You may be like me and not see yourself as a procrastinator but you know, if you take an honest look, I’m sure you’re procrastinating about something this very moment. We all do it. Lisa DeFrank-Cole, Gen X, joins Yo who talks with us about resiliency and other important traits for women leaders. Lisa is Director and F Duke Perry Endowed Professor of Leadership Studies at West Virginia University, and is widely known for her academic and practical expertise in women’s leadership.   She is a leadership coach and has been coauthor/coeditor of the following three academic books about women and leadership including an award-winning textbook:. Women and Leadership: Journey Toward Equity A Research Agenda for Gender and Leadership Women’s Leadership Journeys: Stories, Research, and Novel Perspectives Lisa overcame many stereotypes as a first-generation college graduate from Appalachia to reach where she is today. WV Living magazine named her a “Wonder Woman” in 2019, celebrating her for defying barriers and working towards uplifting West Virginia. Topics Covered: Why resiliency is an important leadership trait What other skills/traits women offer  What are gender norms & alignment   Likeability vs competence    Masculine and feminine traits    What are different strategies to promote equity  What is a leader identity (claiming vs granting)   3 Episode Takeaways   1.   Hardiness is needed for women to be leaders. Resilience is the ability to get back up after being knocked down and trying again. Women face challenges that are different than men when it comes to leadership. 2.   There’s a flexibility and empathy women bring to leadership situations. Because we are scanners women can assess where people are coming from. Research states women bring a transformational approach into organizations. Women can be the “glue” that holds things together which can be unrewarded and overlooked. 3.   Gender norms are changing but not equable yet. It is going in both directions for men and women. Leaders are seen in their ability to make decisions or be agents of change, and how society perceives these differently for men and women is the real challenge.   Card or Gift Items Lisa Liked from Our Store https://girltaketheleadpod.com/shop Snarky Cat, Trust Your Gut Card         Enjoy the Journey Bookmark   More About Lisa: Lisa has 15+ years as a speaker at the International Leadership Association Global Conferences presenting on Women and Leadership. Judy Bornstein, Boomer, joins me to discuss conflict – whoa! Judy is the Founder of C Suite Resolutions, where she provides mediation, ombuds services, conflict and negotiation coaching, and corporate trainings to organizations and executives. She has worked extensively as a CFO and Chief Compliance Officer, and brings her business experience to her work in addressing conflict. Topics Covered: Conflict definition Disagreement vs conflict Gossip Consequences of pushing down conflict Costs involved in unresolved conflicts How organizations set themselves up to handle conflicts Ombuds (trained independent designated neutral to build trust) Working in conflict and understanding our reactions Mediations Three Episode Takeaways   1.   If we only think of conflict as a fight we can lose that it can be a really powerful engine for creativity, change, and self-reflection. 2.   Responses to conflict can fall along gender lines. Many women are raised to “be nice” and “be good”, and told “don’t make a scene”. Women may be uncomfortable acknowledging a conflict so will be quiet or not address it directly, and there is less latitude for women to express conflict than is often afforded to men 3.   Humans are naturally (evolutionarily) wired to not like conflict, so that means our managers, bosses, and leaders probably don’t like conflict. As a result conflict may pushed down or silenced, which can lead to unintentional consequences like blaming the people involved rather than learning from the situation. Conflict is an inherent part of growth and innovation in organizations.   Great Quotes: Hope is not a strategy. We may have conflict because we are wise enough to see the complexity in our world. If you have conflict in your life it doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with you.  Conflict can be perplexing.   Episode Resources:   Baruch Bush: https://www.beyondintractability.org/bksum/bush-promise   More About Judy:   Judy is a doctoral candidate at Penn State University where her research interests center around organizational conflict. She holds a Masters in Dispute Resolution from Pepperdine University’s Caruso School of Law, and an MBA from Simmons University in Boston, where she graduated first in her class. Judy is a Mediation trainer and serves on the San Francisco Bar Association Mediation Panel and on the Arbitration Panel for FINRA (the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority). She is a regular mediator for the Congress of Neutrals where she mediates court cases in Contra Costa County, CA. Judy also co-facilitates a Transformative Mediation group inside San Quentin State Prison, where she offers mediation and conflict-resolution training to incarcerated men interested in non-violent conflict resolution.     How to reach Judy:   LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/judybornstein/ Email: jb@csuiteresolutions.com Website: www.csuiteresolutions.com   How to reach Yo Canny:    Our website: www.girltaketheleadpod.com  You can send a message or voicemail there. Tammy Alvarez, Gen X, joins Yo to discuss her new book, Escaping the Career Trap, Transform Your Apathy, a self-leadership blueprint for high achievers who want to experience true career fulfillment. Tammy is the CEO of the Career Winners Circle, author, professional keynote speaker, inspirational coach, and former corporate executive.  Her spirited “Break All the Rules” approach blends C-Suite experience with a pragmatic, results-based coaching style that helps business professionals create a big impact and love every Monday again.  Tammy’s book is written for people who feel disenfranchised and the “so what” is this: when you start to become the CEO of “You Inc.”, everything changes.  Topics Covered:       Research findings around apathy      How to transform apathy or “just good enough” phase       Being the CEO of your career        Beyond personal branding       Aligning companies & personal employee ambitions        Personal exploration of our passion       Skills to build resilience by failing successfully (experimental mindset)   3 Episode Takeaways   1.   We can break the career trap cycle by knowing what we do want to do, what we love doing, what we want to do next, and why you want to do it. If we find those things that are so natural for us and needed elsewhere, that’s where the magic happens. 2.   The Gartner research determined that 80% of respondents came back satisfied with their job and only 20% came back caring about what they do. When you connect your personal ambition to your personal aspiration with the company’s goals, individuals are more fulfilled and companies thrive. 3.   What if we treated our “frenemies” as our best customer or negotiate when new work comes along? We could be seen as a stronger leader. Drew Turner, Millennial, joins Yo to discuss the McKinsey Women in the Workplace 2024 – the 10th Anniversary Report. Drew began her leadership journey in retail at Williams Sonoma, eventually transitioning into Learning and Development at Tesla. She’s passionate about helping women break free from societal expectations and step confidently into leadership roles. Her vision is a world where women lead boldly and empathetically, breaking barriers for future generations. Drew is also Yo’s Chi Omega Fraternity sister and when they attended The Nancy Walton Laurie Leadership Institute, Yo knew she’d offer all of us rich leadership insights.   Topics Covered:        Women representation at C-suite positions   Barriers women face in the pipeline     Reaching gender parity Making career changes     Kinds of training and education needed      Micro aggressions 3 Episode Takeaways   1.   While women make up 29% of C-suite (2015 it was 17%) it will take 22 years for white women to reach parity - and even longer for women with color.   2.   The Broken Rung disconnect is about the lack of women moving into the manager level: For every 100 men, 81 women are promoted to manager (as of 2024). Another finding: women are no more optimistic than in the past.   3.   It’s good to remember that we can give ourselves permission to change it up by listening to ourselves and our intuition. All the experiences we have come along with us in making a career change.   Episode Resource: Article: https://www.mckinsey.com/featured-insights/diversity-and-inclusion/women-in-the-workplace   More About Drew   As the founder of her coaching business, Drew focuses on empowering women to overcome self-doubt and burnout, helping them lead with confidence and authenticity. We've hit a milestone, 200 episodes, and we're doing something special - this episode is a compilation of 17 different voices from different generations who answered the question: What would you tell your 20 something self today? The answers are amazing!! When considering this question as your host, I see some of my own optimism and naiveté during those years. As a warning my comments speak to Roe v Wade which greatly impacted my 20s and I wanted to speak about that. So if abortion rights are a trigger for you, you may want to skip this episode. Lata is a Change Leadership and Confidence expert, the creator of the “Leading Successful Change” program and the Founder & CEO of Passion Pioneers. Lata said this: “…your career is your launch pad to the rest of your life”. 2.   Lata’s 5 steps were: calculate the costs, remember your worth, get clear on career, commit to change, and carve your path. These can help us come from a place of authenticity and identify what we specifically want. 3.   We are not a one-dimension person. In our previous episode we introduced Rich Hanson, Drew Westen and Amy Chua, experts in political anxiety and we’ll call on them again in this episode. We’ll examine what they have to say about emotional recovery to help us after this presidential election.   Topics Covered: Post-Election Emotional Recovery Mindfulness and Self-Compassion: "taking in the good" focus Understanding Emotional Aftershocks Overcoming Tribalistic Divides Practical Self-Care Tips Reflection on National Resilience   Here are 3 takeaways from our episode:   1.   Drawing on Rick Hanson’s guidance, we can use mindfulness practices like "taking in the good" to counter negative emotions and cultivate resilience. Emphasizing moments of positivity can help us stay grounded and manage post-election stress.   2.   Drew Westen highlights that election-induced emotions don’t simply fade but can linger as "emotional aftershocks." These residual feelings of anger, fear, or disappointment may affect relationships and public discourse, so it’s important to be aware of these lingering tensions as people process the election’s outcome.   3.   According to Amy Chua, overcoming tribal divides involves recognizing diverse identities, fostering empathy, and working on shared community goals. This can be accomplished through local actions and open dialogue, allowing individuals to see each other as allies rather than adversaries, despite differing views.   Mentioned in the Episode:   Chris Davis:   Freedom from Suffering about the Election   Rick Hanson: https://www.amazon.com/   Let Be, Let Go, Let In 15-Minute Guided Meditation   https://www.bu.edu/articles/2024/anxious-about-election/   https://rickhanson.com/dos-and-donts-of-virtuous-conduct/   https://rickhanson.com/topics-for-personal-growth/navigating-political-turmoil/   https://rickhanson.com/how-to-promote-healthy-human-politics/   Amy Chua, Political Tribes: Group Instinct and the Fate of Nations https://www.amazon.com/     Drew Weston, The Political Brain: The Role of Emotion in Deciding the Fate of the Nation https://www.amazon.com/     How to reach Yo Canny:    Our Store: www.girltaketheleadpod.com/store    Our Website: www.girltaketheleadpod.com  You can send a message or voicemail there. In many of our past episodes we’ve uncovered aspects of emotions that can come up when we’re stressed plus this month we’re looking into the topic of conflict so today’s episode goes into both these areas by looking at the political anxiety many of us may be experiencing around the upcoming Presidential election. No matter where you fall on the political spectrum we seem to all experiencing the same sensation of fear resulting from the polarization we’re feeling. We thought it might be helpful to take a deeper look at this by exploring the what and the why when it comes to feeling this way, particularly as election day approaches. We’ll call on 3 experts to guide us: Rick Hanson, Amy Chua, and Drew Westen Ph.D. Rick Hanson, Ph.D., is a neuropsychologist and New York Times best-selling author. His books include Hardwiring Happiness, Buddha's Brain, Just One Thing, Resilient: How to Grow an Unshakable Core of Calm, Strength, and Happiness. He’ll help us learn more about mindfulness and emotional regulation.   And Amy Chua is author of the Political Tribes: Group Instinct and the Fate of Nations. She is a noted expert in the fields of ethnic conflict and globalization and will help us learn about tribalism and identity politics.   Drew Westen, author The Political Brain, The Role of Emotion in Deciding the Fate of the Nation, is a clinical, personality, and political psychologist and neuroscientist. He will help us see how emotions, particularly fear and anger influence politics.   This will be a 2 part series. This is the episode covering the pre-election and the other will be post-election.   Topics Covered: Political Anxiety Defined Rick Hanson’s Concept of “Paper Tiger Paranoia” Virtuous Conduct Tribalism and Identity Politics (Amy Chua) Emotions in Politics (Drew Westen) Statistics on the 2024 Election Campaign (Pew Research Center) Mindfulness, Empathy, and Connection   Here are 3 takeaways from our episode:   1.     Political anxiety, driven by high-stakes issues like abortion and climate change, is often intensified by our brain's tendency to overestimate threats, known as "paper tiger paranoia." Mindfulness can help manage these fears by grounding us in reality and reducing the sense of being overwhelmed. 2.     Tribalism, as described by Amy Chua, worsens political anxiety by creating an "us vs. them" mentality. While polarization grows, she remains optimistic that local, community-driven efforts can bridge divides and foster empathy. 3.     Emotions in politics play a major role in voter decision-making, with campaigns often exploiting fear and anger. Drew Westen highlights that positive emotions, like hope and authenticity, can inspire greater political engagement and help alleviate political anxiety.   Mentioned in the Episode:   Rick Hanson: https://www.amazon.com/   Let Be, Let Go, Let In 15-Minute Guided Meditation   https://www.bu.edu/articles/2024/anxious-about-election/   https://rickhanson.com/dos-and-donts-of-virtuous-conduct/   https://rickhanson.com/topics-for-personal-growth/navigating-political-turmoil/   https://rickhanson.com/how-to-promote-healthy-human-politics/   Amy Chua, Political Tribes: Group Instinct and the Fate of Nations https://www.amazon.com/   Drew Weston, The Political Brain: The Role of Emotion in Deciding the Fate of the Nation https://www.amazon.com/   https://www.pewresearch.org/politics/2024/10/10/voters-feelings-about-the-2024-campaign-and-election-outcomes-concerns-about-political-violence/   Peace of Wild Things by Wendell Berry https://www.scottishpoetrylibrary.org.uk/poem/peace-wild-things-0/ How to reach Yo Canny:    Our Store: www.girltaketheleadpod.com/store    Our Website: www.girltaketheleadpod.com  You can send a message or voicemail there. The technology allows one to practice and do a dress rehearsal so the body can be relaxed during what can be difficult conversations. 2.   Avatar-led technology is different than role-playing because of the vulnerability involved in 1:1 conversation with people can have unintended consequences while avatar-led training allows individual practice and results in complete buy-in. 3.   The actor/avatar provides the safe-space (no right or wrong) to allow participants reveal their personal stories that they’re naturally open to in life for their own self-discovery.   Other Episodes On Topic:   Ep. 191, The Art of Storytelling: Building Abundance Through Personal Narratives w Andrea Sampson https://spotifyanchor-web.app.link/e/QfjRzAFODNb   Ep. 76, “Don’t Take It So Personally!” & Emotional Intelligence https://spotifyanchor-web.app.link/e/2f8jMSuODNb Other Episodes with Andrea Canny:   Ep. 1, Wait, I can Sound Wimpy https://spotifyanchor-web.app.link/e/8iGXusmODNb   Ep. 2, Is Leadership Funny? https://spotifyanchor-web.app.link/e/yGgkAmpODNb   Ep. 3, Betty White: More than Just Funny? https://spotifyanchor-web.app.link/e/dtcRjmpODNb   Ep. 89, Andrea Canny Discusses: Ageism, Interviewing, Pay Gaps, Talents, & Seeing Our Gifts https://spotifyanchor-web.app.link/e/hdtUePuODNb   The Eii Demo Offer: https://eiieq.com/contact/   How to reach or follow Janine & Eii:  https://info@eiieq.com   How to reach Andrea Canny:   Andrea has her own Proofreading/Editing business (books, scripts, etc.) and her coaching studio for corporate speakers and private & group coaching in vocal performance & the business of entertainment for performers. This month we’ve been talking about grief and this episode could be an example of anticipatory grief because we’re talking about Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States who recently on Oct 1 celebrated his 100th birthday. Our hope is that you'll be inspired by this short Sound Bite episode. There is a ton of things to admire about him – I recently shared some of them with some Millennials I know who said, "Wow, I had no idea" so we're taking the opportunity today to share some of my learning with you about this man. I am already grieving our loss.   Mentioned in the Episode: Jimmy Carter – Rock ‘n Roll President https://www.jimmycartermovie.com/   https://www.newyorker.com/news/letter-from-the-south/jimmy-carters-rock-and-roll-legacy   https://theconversation.com/jimmy-carter-at-100-how-his-life-outside-the-white-house-proves-hes-long-been-ahead-of-his-time-240016   https://www.voanews.com/a/former-us-president-jimmy-carter-surpasses-one-year-in-hospice/7498654.html   https://www.southernliving.com/jimmy-carter-quotes-7976383   How to reach Yo Canny:    Our Store: www.girltaketheleadpod.com/store    Our Website: www.girltaketheleadpod.com  You can send a message or voicemail there. So we like to cover books and have guests on the show to talk about emotions so we can be better leaders and based on the number of listens, you like to explore those topics with us. And there’s one emotion we realized was suspiciously absent from our list. And that emotion was grief. As some of you know we recently lost the dog we’ve had the pleasure of loving and caring for, over the last 7 years, Caitlin. She was a very spicy 13 yo Frenchie and we are so grateful to her breeder who thought it would be great for her to live her later years with us. There were several things that the event of losing Cait, as we liked to call her, brought to the forefront as I went through the process of grieving. Here’s what we’ll cover in the episode so you can choose to listen or not and it’s okay if it’s not – grief is a complex and difficult topic, particularly if you’re going through something right now.   Topics Covered:      What is grief? And we’ll reference Brené Brown’s Atlas of the Heart for that.      Is the grief of losing a pet different from losing a person we love?       Can grief bring other losses to the forefront?       Is the experience of grief different if it’s sudden rather than having the time to prepare?         How do emotions around grief like guilt manifest themselves?         What does the author, David Kessler, have to say about the Sixth Stage of Grief of finding meaning?       What does the author, Victor Frankel, say about grief?     Here are 3 takeaways from our episode:   1.   Grief is deeply personal and complex: Grief isn't limited to the death of a loved one and can manifest through a wide range of emotions, often involving sadness, guilt, or anger. 2.   Grieving a pet can bring up layered losses: The loss of a pet can trigger cumulative grief, where past losses reemerge and intensify the current experience. While society may not always acknowledge the depth of pet grief, it can be just as profound as grieving a loved one. Pets provide emotional support and companionship, making their absence felt in everyday life. 3.    Finding meaning is a crucial part of healing: David Kessler's "Sixth Stage of Grief" teaches that healing goes beyond accepting loss; it's about discovering meaning in the aftermath. This process helps us honor the memory of what we've lost and find purpose in life again. Meaning is personal and can come from ongoing connections with loved ones, rituals, or reflecting on the lessons their lives offered.   Mentioned in the Episode:   Atlas of the Heart by Brené Brown Finding Meaning: The Sixth Stage of Grief by David Kessler On Death and Dying Elisabeth Kubler-Ross Motherless Daughters and The AfterGrief by Hope Edelmann Man’s Search for Meaning by Victor Frankel Bittersweet by Susan Cain https://www.amazon.com/    Ep 23 Part 1 of 2 – Bittersweet (Susan Cain): How do Sorrow and Longing Help Us Lead? https://spotifyanchor-web.app.link/e/znsJe8hFlNb   Ep 24 Part 2 of 2 – Bittersweet (Susan Cain): How do the Arts Play a Role in Seeing Our Whole Selves? https://spotifyanchor-web.app.link/e/xtihY7hFlNb   Ep 111 – More About Daniel Pink’s ‘Power of Regret’ – From Regrets to Resilience https://spotifyanchor-web.app.link/e/JIv88ffFlNb   How to reach Yo Canny:    Our Store: www.girltaketheleadpod.com/store    Our Website: www.girltaketheleadpod.com  You can send a message or voicemail there. Sometimes you surprise yourself. The sky is not the limit.   2.   We do make assessments about what we wear and what others wear. It can reflect what we think about ourselves. Naysayers are usually people not as successful as us and our cheerleaders usually are. 3.   You’ll find you need help so it’s important to find mentors who know more than us. We need to own who you are, the good and the bad, and acknowledge how far we’ve come. This month we’re all about Abundance and this episode continues the conversation by doing two things: The first is covering the book, The Algebra of Wealth, A Simple Formula for Financial Security, by Scott Galloway. I had seen several posts by Galloway on LinkedIn and thought he had a lot to say about wealth, both from the functional and higher vibrational level. And the second thing will be to share some recent learnings about Resilience I’ve had over the weekend when I attended the Nancy Walton Laurie Leadership Institute of Chi Omega in Memphis, TN.   Topics Covered: Key economic statistics “True advice” research findings Galloway’s wealth algebraic equation Emotional security Deep dive into resilience Here are 3 takeaways from our episode:   1.   Despite the challenges we face, the future holds incredible opportunities for those who remain focused, adaptable, and willing to invest in themselves. 2.   Economic security isn’t just about how much you earn, but about what you keep and how you use it. 3.   By embracing a mindset of resilience and long-term thinking, we can redefine success and build lives of abundance, free from the anxieties that have weighed down previous generations. Remember, wealth is not just about money—it’s about choices. And when you take control of your financial future, you gain the freedom to live on your own terms.”   Mentioned in the Episode:   The Algebra of Wealth, A Simple Formula For Financial Security, Scott Galloway https://profgmedia.com/books/   Ep. 163, Rethinking Grit: Embracing Quit with Nicole Trick Steinbach (Annie Duke’s book) https://spotifyanchor-web.app.link/e/ZKkPRCHFOMb   Nicole Trick Steinbach Podcast: Build Your Brave Career https://tricksteinbach.com/bravepodcast/   Galloway’s Prof G Podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-prof-g-pod-with-scott-galloway/id1498802610    Ep. 20, Sheryl Crow, Leading with Vulnerability https://spotifyanchor-web.app.link/e/89vpHlyFOMb   Ep. 108, Unlocking Happiness : Arthur Brooks and Oprah’s “Build the Life You Want”. https://spotifyanchor-web.app.link/e/2S3OZIEFOMb   Ep. 39, Be a terri Cole Boundary Boss in Training, Too! https://spotifyanchor-web.app.link/e/bp2kLFBFOMb   Voluspa Goji Tarocco Orange Candle (Yo's fav): https://voluspa.com/     How to reach Yo Canny:    Our Store: https://www.girltaketheleadpod.com/store    Our Website: www.girltaketheleadpod.com  You can send a message or voicemail there. We’ve been covering stories about fearless leadership for August and this is our final episode. I know you probably all followed the Olympics in Paris this year and heard a lot about the women who stood out with amazing stories like Katie, Simone, Sha'Carri , but I’m thinking there’s some other stories you may not have heard about and that’s my hope for today. I hope you hear something new and feel inspired learning about these fearless women, moms, and soon-to-be moms.   Athletes Covered: Yaylagul Ramazanova Nada Hafez Zhiying Zeng Charley Davidson Allyson Felix   Card Match to Episode: “Cheers, You Made It Look So Easy” https://girltaketheleadpod.com/shop#!/cheers/p/674843008/category=0   Here are three takeaways from the episode: 1.   The 2024 Olympics demonstrated gender parity. 2.   The original spirit of the Olympics was alive and well as athletes showed their passion and care for each other. 3.   Being a mother doesn’t need to mean career death as an athlete!   Mentioned in the Episode:   https://www.forbes.com/sites/bradadgate/2024/07/11/for-the-first-time-the-olympics-will-have-gender-equality/ https://www.newsweek.com/olympics-archery-paris-2024-pregnant-yaylagul-ramazanova-1937174   https://olympics.com/en/news/egypt-fencing-nada-hafez-pregnant-paris-2024-olympics   https://www.nbcnews.com/news/asian-america/58-year-old-table-tennis-grandma-olympic-dream-zeng-zhiying-rcna164717   https://www.firstpost.com/sports/olympics-2024-yusuf-dikec-zhiying-zeng-nada-hafez-yaylagul-ramazanova-inspirational-stories-13800111.html https://uk.huel.com/pages/10-inspiring-stories-from-the-olympics-2024 https://www.worldarchery.sport/news/201761/healey-out-paris-2024-olympic-games-and-admits-tough-season https://www.facebook.com/reel/495304023114517 https://www.linkedin.com/posts/university-of-southern-california_allyson-felix-launches-first-ever-olympic-activity-7222994196813561856-RyAZ?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_ios   https://www.facebook.com/search/top?q=shower%20arguments%20with%20emily%20solberg     How to reach Yo Canny:    Our website: www.girltaketheleadpod.com  You can send a message or voicemail there. Lida Citroën, Boomer, joins us to talk about her new book, The New Rules of Influence – How to Authentically Build Trust, Drive Change, and Make an Impact. Lida is a keynote speaker, author and executive coach empowering global executives, entrepreneurs, and thought leaders to manage how they’re perceived and drive them towards ideal opportunities. She has helped thousands of individuals gain a fresh perspective on crafting a personal narrative that tells the right story to the right people about who they are. Her personal mission isn't just about perception—it's about profound transformation, guiding others to leave an indelible mark on the tapestry of human achievement.   Topics covered in the Episode: We matter Executive Presence and Influence Groups of Rules (why, who, how, where) Misalignment of values Brand and Influence Influencers & Social Media Here are three takeaways from the episode:   1.    Executive presence is about: Gravitas but that can’t be well-defined, Image which is about how to dress the part, and Communication that are usually scripted messages. That doesn’t necessarily lead to influence which is not manipulation or persuasion. This is why we need new rules. 2.    Lida divides the 10 rules into 4 groups. Courage is our “Why” and it’s about being real. Credibility means being clear what we stand for. “Who” is now global and includes rules of being of service and inclusive. “How” is not about perfection but being consistent and that builds trust. “Where” is about visibility. 3.   Misalignment of our values can be part of the journey and gets us to where we are (Rule 3) We’ve all experienced this and we learn from them. Mentioned in the episode:   Lida’s Book: The New Rules of Influence – How to Authentically build Trust, Drive Change and Make an Impact Release Date: August 27. Publisher is Berrett-Koehler. This month we’ve been covering stories about fearless leadership and perhaps like you have been intrigued by the political landscape this month and seeing Kamala Harris emerge as what one can only describe as fearless. So I dug in and found some sources that can help us elements of her leadership that we’ve been covering on the show. Topics Covered:        Early inspirations  Competition    Determination   Resilience     Networking     Empathy   Here are three takeaways from the episode: 1.   Kamala Harris is breaking the mold for women when it comes to leadership. Her early foundation (mother-inspired, Berkeley in the 60s) set her on a course to be an advocate, empathy, and insights into politics. 2.    Kamala has designed her own way (blended family, Presidential run in 2020) and is an example of learning from failure and demonstrating resilience. 3.   One of Kamala’s greatest strengths are her people skills: networking, building influence and creating alliances.   Mentioned in the Episode:   Ep 48, A discussion with Andrea Mein DeWitt about her book: Name Claim Reframe, Your Path to a Well-Lived Life. https://spotifyanchor-web.app.link/e/cfTURe31gMb   Book: Kamala’s Way, An American Life, Dan Morain   Ep. 60, Let’s Celebrate Women’s History Month with the book: Women and Leadership by Julia Gillard & Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala https://spotifyanchor-web.app.link/e/T20W9Za2gMb   Ep. 15, Part 1 of 3, Atlas of the Heart: How do the emotions, Empathy and Compassion, relate to leadership? https://spotifyanchor-web.app.link/e/DZ0O7Q71gMb   The 'blended' family behind Kamala Harris, August 16, 2023 https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/clylqv3g4rwo   Inside Kamala Harris' close bond with rarely seen sister Maya Harris https://www.hellomagazine.com/celebrities/711649/meet-kamala-harris-sister-maya-harris/   Economic shocks are wiping out progress on gender equality: Global Gender Gap Report 2023, June, 2023 https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2023/06/economics-shocks-gender-equality-linkedin/     How to reach Yo Canny:    Our website: www.girltaketheleadpod.com  You can send a message or voicemail there. Kim Dechaine, Gen X, joins us to talk about the fearless face of depression as part 4 of our 4-part series about the book Fearless Female Leaders by Kathy McAfee and Rosemary Paetow (Eps, 182, 183, 184).   Kim is a recognized international speaker and facilitator who specializes in empowering professional women to stay in their leadership roles with more ease and joy, by navigating and preventing overwhelm and burnout. Through her journey with depression and suicidal thoughts, Kim has learned one important truth: we are Human-BEINGS, not Human-DOINGS. Her passion lies in providing workshops and leadership programs to businesses and organizations that focus on mindfulness, self-leadership, and productivity.   Topics covered in the Episode: Role of leadership and core values like peace Trusting your intuition Self-awareness and leadership Compassion The necessity to look after ourselves Post-partum depression Connecting to each other  Mental health actions to “pause” and “be” Here are three takeaways from the episode:   1.    Values in leadership, especially having peace and calm in our heart, when it comes to decision making, it might be a lightness leading to a “Yes”. 2.    Women in leadership have a special gift of intuition – pausing in that peace and calm can help us listen to that intuition. Both are intertwined. We have to learn to be quiet and pause. 3.   Self-awareness and shifting ourselves is #1 to be fearless leaders – it starts with us. Compassion helps us lead from our heart. We have to be able to listen and to listen we need to pause. Reminder: No one has 100% mental health. It’s a practice. We need to prioritize it. Paula Stone Williams, Boomer, joins us to talk about the fearless face of authenticity as part 3 of our 4-part series about the book Fearless Female Leaders by Kathy McAfee and Rosemary Paetow (Eps, 182, 183).   Paula is a Pastoral Counselor and internationally known speaker on gender equity and religious tolerance. As Kathy and Rosemary wrote this in their book after interviewing Paula: “She who had been born into a boy’s body and was given the name Paul by her parents knew she was meant to be a girl… After leading a double life he made the fearless decision to move forward with her gender transition... for the first time in her years on earth she was feeling seen, heard, loved and valued for who she truly was. A woman.”    Topics covered in the Episode: Transition journey Male & woman leadership insights Gender equity Authenticity Mary Oliver’s The Journey Actions to take the deep inner journey What keeps us from leading Rejection Types of gifts Women apologizing   Here are three takeaways from the episode:   1.    Women can have very strong leadership tendencies and tend to have great confidence coupled with great humility. 2.    The call toward authenticity is sacred, is holy, and for the greater good and it’s terrifying and never easy. 3.   What stops us from leading is not what we fear but what gave birth to the fear. It’s something that comes from thinking we’re unworthy of deep human connection as we are. You cannot lead from a place of strength until you deal with this dragon. Jane (Ballard) Dyer, Boomer, joins us to talk about fearlessness in the face of sexism.   Jane is a retired Air Force pilot and found her determination and grit to graduate from her training school even though her class voted to make sure no woman would graduate from her class. She broke the team goal with style and grace. Whoa!! Her story is amazing and will leave you much inspired. It is featured in the book, Fearless Female Leaders, written by Kathy McAfee and Rosemary Paetow which we featured in Ep. 182.   Topics covered in the Episode: Explicit sexism Taking the time to find confidence over nervousness Self-inflicted stress Dads’ unconditional support Women empowering other women Importance of voting Selecting people to be on our team   Here are three takeaways from the episode:   1.    We will face the “naysayers” in life. It may take us time to dig deep to find that part of us where fearlessness is born. 2.    Jane’s success during these 1980s led the way for so many more future female pilots. 3.   We can all lack confidence at times but we can remind ourselves, like Jane did, that we can do things even when we’re afraid because we can breathe in the support of those who believe we can. More About Jane:   Jane Dyer retired from flying in 2017 as a Boeing 777 Captain.  She amassed over 10,000 accident-free hours at FedEx.  Prior to the B777, she was the Captain of the Airbus 300 and Boeing 727. Her flying career began in the USAF where she flew the KC135, an air-refueling aircraft, and instructed in the T-37, a primary trainer for the Air Force.    While in the Air Force, she met and married her husband, John Dyer. John also retired from the US Air Force as a pilot, serving two tours in Vietnam.  He is a highly decorated pilot, including the Purple Heart.    They have four children, three grandchildren and a great grandson.    Jane has always been active in her community as a youth sports coach, church volunteer, and Boy Scout merit badge counselor.   How to reach Jane:    janedyersc@gmail.com   How to reach Yo Canny:    Our website: www.girltaketheleadpod.com  You can send a message or voicemail there. In our episode 177 we covered the book, Worthy by Jamie Kern Lima. I’d mentioned my interest in a distinction she covered: Toxic Positivity. When I saw that part in her book I had visions of the Disney Pixar film Inside Out (2015) which did a fantastic job illustrating the dangers of being so over-positive that it can be damaging. I could totally relate to the character! Can you? Topics Covered: Defining “toxic positivity” Signs and problems with “toxic positivity” Melody Wilding’s Sensitive Strivers and positivity Gabby Bernsten’s view on “manic manifesting” Research findings   Here are 3 takeaways:   1.   “Toxic Positivity” is common and often a response to some underlying beliefs. 2.    Thinking positive 24/7 can be stressful and deny our humanity. 3.    Accepting our full range of emotions benefits us and some ways to do this include practices like mindful meditation and learning to take other perspectives.
