Narrative design an often overlooked yet crucial aspect of game development. When done correctly, a game can inspire, delight, and represent players in ways never thought of before. But when done incorrectly, a game risks offending, alienating, and misrepresenting players who may seek comfort and joy in a particular project. In this episode of Those Who Play Create! Chances are if you’re a millennial around my age, you’ve at one point in your life enjoyed a classic video game. The nostalgia of playing a retro-style pixel game just unlocks many warm memories and feelings. In this episode, I interviewed Zu Ehtisham, the lead developer and pixel artist for the upcoming indie hit Berserk Boy. A project that is not only inspired by this golden age of video games, but seeks to pay homage to it as well!

Video games open up a new world to us players. Just like turning the pages of your favorite novel, video games can transport you to a whole new universe where seemingly anything is possible. But what separates an okay game from a great game is the ability to ground the fantasy using some real-world elements.
