Placement is one of the hardest things to get "right" right now. This is because while special education "isn't a place, it's a service," schools still have a framework for assigning caseloads and having some sort of order for their staff... ...and that leads to support levels where children are encouraged to fall within a certain placement. In this episode with Angelica Medrano, we discuss: 1) What these 4 levels of placment are 2) What determines the placement 3) What that placement looks like 4) Key factors that are so important for parents to know so they can get their child the right support placement! From sharing about your history and culture to steering the ship-learn all about how taking the offensive and putting in the work to be a great advocate really does pay!
Who is this case manager person, and what do they actually do? Do I have any control over who I get, and what happens if they aren't helping me advocate for my kid?  Case managers are super important in the IEP process, as they can make your job as a parent advocate so much easier, or so much harder.  Don't know if you have a "good" case manager or a "bad" one? We go through that as well. You'll have to listen to find out!
Before I get into these amazing tips and stories from parents and parent-friendly professionals alike, we need to back up a sec.  We need to talk about how the IEP (Individualized Education Plan) came to be and why it's the best vehicle to advocate for your child with a disability. We need to go over what IDEA is and what the intention was, the update in 2004 and how it raised the inclusion bar, and why it's the best way to advocate from a legal and timing perspective!
Beth Liesenfeld, occupational therapist, shares the mission of the Elevate Your Advocacy Podcast: to help parents of disabled children get the most out of their advocacy efforts through understanding and leveraging the IEP (Individualized Education Program) process. Expect to hear from parents who have been through the process, quick tips and explanations, stories of real life parents and students, and interviews with the most Parent Friendly educators and special service providers. It's time we talk about 504's... Because this under-rated and often misunderstood learning plan is pretty amazing when it works and it's being implented!  ...but pretty useless if it's not.  Topics we cover today are:  1) 504's vs IEP (let's review the difference!) 2) Can you have BOTH an IEP & 504? (hint: I see this answered incorrectly alll the time!) 3) Common issues with 504's (ex: it not being implemented).  FREE Accommodations 101 Guide: https://theieplab.com/accommodations shownotes: https://theieplab.com/episode148
The #1 thing I help parent advocates do is to focus in on WHAT their advocacy should be focused on.  SO! It's not suprising that we have to back up and ask ourselves some questions about the plan in place, and how it's working and how it isn't!  This is the recording of the free webinar we held last week to help parents answer 3 questions to determine if their child's IEP/504/other learning plan was effective, and YOU can listen to it today! I overheard some teachers talking in a coffee shop a while ago...and I while I sat listening to them...offended...I also thought about how we (meaning you...and me!) can persuade them to think a little deeper. So today on the podcast, it's a bit different-because it's story telling time! Both in how staff learns behavior management (-or not-), and my own story of creating some change with a kiddo with "behaviors." We also tackle: -Why ABA in the schools is such a big deal. -What is PBIS? -And how we can actually have changing ideals from behavior being "dealt with" to changing the perspective to equal more and unique support needs? So is this week's episode excusing the archaic nature of schools and behavior? Absolutely not! Will it create an "ah-hah" moment that allows you to craft your questions and support requests in a way that makes staff question if "what they've always done" is really the best way? I sure hope so!
