Congress reauthorizes the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.

FISA reauthorization. On Saturday night, President Biden signed legislation reauthorizing Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), the controversial warrantless surveillance program whose renewal had been held up by bipartisan concerns. Minutes after it lapsed at midnight on Friday, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) announced a deal to vote on a package of amendments to the House-passed bill to reauthorize the FISA. The Senate approved the reauthorization 60-34.

House passes foreign aid, TikTok bills.

House passes foreign aid, TikTok bills.

The House foreign aid and TikTok bills. On Saturday, the House of Representatives passed three separate foreign aid bills for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, totaling $95 billion. The House also passed a bill that will ban TikTok from app stores if ByteDance, the Chinese company that owns it, does not sell the app to a U.S. company and also allows the potential transfer of seized Russian assets to Ukraine.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) helped usher the package across the finish line despite threats from members of the House Freedom Caucus that they'd move to vacate him from the speakership if he passed the bills.

Separate bills for aid to Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan.

Separate bills for aid to Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan.

House Speaker Mike Johnson. In a closed-door meeting of Republican legislators on Monday, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) announced a new plan for voting on foreign aid that will split the $95 billion foreign aid package passed by the Senate into four different bills. The House would then vote on the bills funding Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan separately, with a fourth bill addressing other Republican priorities and sources of funding for the aid. The move comes in response to pressure facing the Speaker to align divisions within his own party, which uniformly urges support for Israel but whose right flank opposes any additional funding for Ukraine.

Answering our reader and listener mailbag.

Answering our reader and listener mailbag.

Every now and again, we have so many reader questions in the backlog that we decide to devote a full edition to address them. Today is one of those days.

I love reader mailbag editions because they give us a chance to cover a variety of topics in one newsletter. It can also be fun to answer questions that are a little more personal, or a little outside our standard U.S. politics realm (we love those kinds of questions, so don’t be shy!).

In today’s edition, we’ll be tackling a wide range of topics and doing something new: Splitting up some of the answers. You’ll notice that some of today’s questions are answered by Ari, some by Will, and even one by Magdalena.

We hope you enjoy this edition, and don’t forget you can always ask us a question by replying to an email or filling out this form.

Billy Fleming ,

This is what journalism should be

Isaac does deeper-dive analyses on one major headline each day, presenting facts, known liberal and conservative spin, and his own opinion where he acknowledges his own biases. It has made me feel like I have the full context in about 10-20 minutes. Tangle is overall just rational. While I don’t always agree with Isaac’s Take, I always respect where he is coming from and understand his logic. 10/10. Recommend.

MeNoelle ,

Way overdue! Grateful for this pod

I’ve been a subscriber to the Tangle newsletter for a couple years, when I was looking for news sources that aren’t slanted, and that represent middle America, which is where most of us live. Can’t someone just explain the news? The best part of Tangle is when they explain “what the left is saying” and “what the right is saying.” It offer perspective you’ll find no where else. This pod is the perfect complement to the newsletter and my morning routine!

Buongi mama ,

Great balanced podcast

I HATE listening to or reading the news. That is, I did until I found this podcast. It is so refreshing to get both sides of the story with a hopeful cast. Thank you so much!!
