Wow. You'll just have to listen to what Ikki Soma has to say. It's powerful. It's fun. It's wise. It's all of the above and so much more. It was a straight honor to talk to Ikki. As a professional sports chaplain who was formerly the NBA's Houston Rockets chaplain, he takes you inside the locker room to see what it's like working with NBA athletes in today's day and age, ministering to pro athletes. Amber & I stumbled upon Stubbs BBQ one Sunday during SXSW to a Lecrae concert, followed by an incredible panel with Lecrae, Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger, former Facebook exec & current YouVersion Bible app exec Nona Jones, Immersed founder Renji Bijoy, and Sailpoint Technologies Mark McClain talking Faith in the Workplace. The panel was all a part of an incredible Sunday Service at SXSW event presented by the Luis Palau Association & sponsored by He Gets Us (you know, those incredible Super Bowl commercials, DCX-building connections in the Austin community, and the Living Water Foundation. This day was honestly one of the best experiences we've had in Austin thus far. This episode comes to you recorded in Portugal. I’m half-Filipino. I’m half-White. Mrs Amber J is my Filipina queen. Together, two worlds collide. Though we both have Filipino in our blood, we both have completely different experiences growing up in Detroit & LA. My dad came to Detroit from The Philippines when he was 8, Amber’s mother came to LA when she was an adult. Naturally, LA is more diverse than the Midwest, so our conception of being Asian in America and all that comes along with that (cough cough - we’re not Chinese, Japanese, Thai - we have so much respect for these cultures it’s just most people never guess Filipino - they’re only conception of Asia is associated with China or Japan, not the dozens of other countries that make up the continent - and ask questions like “what are you”. Well, I’m glad you asked. I’m a man. A man of God. A husband. It’s interesting how just because of people’s perceptions and views, I’ve gotten stereotyped to be “Yao Ming” “Jackie Chan” “Jeremy Lin” and oh, must love math and be great at kung-fu…these among countless other forms of discrimination and how that can deep-seededly without even realizing it affect how we view ourselves, is discussed in this episode. Among a myriad of other topics associated with race, being Filipino-American, challenges we’ve encountered while on a mission trip in Europe, what we’ve learned, how we’re growing, and much more. (please excuse the fan noise in our northern Portuguese abode--it's authentic to our living situation) Side note: I’m not Chinese or Japanese . Shout out to all those who are. But people in just pure ignorance out a label on me and stereotype me because they look at me and see Asia (a continent that has 50+ countries) so they say what they know & assume what they think they know- karate , math , you know. I never did karate I don’t like math. I’m proud to be filipino 🇵🇭 I’m half Filipino half white was being and raised in the great state of Michigan and most importantly I’m a man of God. I’m a man. Not your preconceived notion of what you may perceive me to be. Think before thinking 🤔 Before saying before stereotyping before judging. #stopasianhate People can over complicate things and find excuses to judge just like the Pharisees did but hey Jesus home we serve was the most misunderstood so we got him to depend on every day. I’m just trying to be done people pleasing. It’s something I struggle with my whole life and I’ve gotten to a point that hey if you don’t understand I don’t have to explain myself that hey if do you know somebody doesn’t like me just for being me or just completely misunderstand me or tries to attack me guess what I’m covered by God Almighty and will continue to love Jesus honor my wife love my family friends and love you and forgive you and just be me. With 91 years of living, this man is honestly one of the most profound, knowledgeable, agents for true, authentic, tangible change fighting for justice in this world today.Background on Dr. Perkins via his foundation:"Dr. John Perkins is one of the last living civil rights leaders who fought for equality and reconciliation throughout most of his life. He also has...received 16 honorary doctorates. Now, at 91 years-old, Dr. Perkins has written his final book, Count It All Joy: The Ridiculous Paradox of Suffering (Moody Publishers) that reflects on examples of suffering, why we suffer, and the joys of suffering. When he was seven months old, John Perkins’ mother died of malnutrition. At 16, his older brother was murdered by police. As a civil rights activist, John was tortured and beaten by police. He endured familial suffering with the murder of his sister and the death of two sons. John recently battled cancer. The league seemed to be at the forefront of a lot of discussions involving social justice protests and seemingly was one of the first major leagues to shut its arena doors in 2020. In what was a difficult season of life and the NBA continues its season, hopefully we can all learn a little something from some of the lessons they've learned to apply to this season of life...to continue the conversation so that it doesn't become just a trend or #hashtag but a livelihood to promote equality and respect and love others. It's a shame that it took everything that transpired for people to talk about it but at least NOW it's being talked about. But it should be talked about whether or not it's 'cool' or 'mainstream' to talk about it. It should be talked about. Period. And equality should be an everyday, everybody thing. Period. Not just when it's trending. Black lives matter.When you hear that, what does that spark in you?It's what i ask Fortune 500 company GM's global communications / multicultural specialist--Lester Booker, Jr., MSA. We worked together with the Detroit Pistons in Community Relations and is my close friend-was one of the groomsmen in my wedding-my brother in Christ. We talked about this topic and so much more--from his experiences dealing with racism, what he's learned through quarantine, his thoughts on the pandemic, how believers can make an impact during this unprecedented time outside the four walls of a church in the world with COVID-19 along with the social justice unrest--and why difficult conversations can spark real change--that this needs to be more than just a trending topic but how we can enact tangible action to better listen to all races and backgrounds in bringing real equality...and even--yes--my "Are you 4 Real?!" segment where we debate on the best fast food restaurant of all time, if he had a super power what would it be, his favorite memory which includes proving doubters wrong and walking across that stage to get a master's degree. I'm a black man, my life matters...the life I live is significant, it makes a difference, it impacts people...if everyone comes together and has the right mindset..we'll definitely progress and the world's issues right now are really making people have hard conversations that they never want to have but are forced to have because of what's going on in the world today everyone has to have these conversations...black lives matter, at the end of the day...African Americans, people of color, minorities, to your point, they matter... 2044 are going to be the majority...people...like it or not it , the minoritywill be the majority, it's trending that way""these conversations have happened and happened ...now the action has to happen""I hope that pastors, bishops all over understand the importance of building disciples and the importance of the work that's done outside the four walls of the church because...there is no church building right now...there's still more people praying now than they've ever prayed before in their life..people are believing, people are having transparent conversations with people to have understanding of who God is and what He is...even in trying times people are still putting (their) faith in God"…

One that is long-suffering, one that is pure, one that is genuine.You've stuck by my side through the up's and down's, love, leading all the way to these past few weeks...some of which have been the most difficult of my life...the week leading up to this episode being released ... hearing my Lola died in Michigan...you were with me getting a last minute flight there to honor her life and encouraging/supporting me every step of the way.
