Hello Counties! It's been a minute but we're back with a feed drop! We were recently interviewed by the co-founders of SquadCast.fm, Zach Moreno and Rock Felder, on their podcast, Between Two Mics: The Remote Recording Podcast. They asked us to join them because when we wrapped season 2 of our podcast, Arielle posted this epic tweet thread about podcast marketing. In it, Arielle writes about how in just 14 months, with no network backing, no ad budget, and a niche topic, we were able to reach 100,000 downloads for the podcast. In this interview, we explain how we did it. We also discuss how Counter Programming came to be, we talk about our friendship, and lots more. We hope you enjoy it. We've missed ya, Counties! Today we're diving into the question that was on everyone's mind after watching Bridgerton ...What the heck is a Viscount? The good news for us here at Counter Programming is that Bridgerton was recently back in the news. Unfortunately for everyone else, the news was that Regé-Jean Page will not be in the upcoming season (even though Shonda Rhimes said this was planned from the start). This week, more counters! Tally counters. Welcome to Counter Programming with Shira & Arielle. Each week, we bring you information on anything with the word "count" or "counter" in its title. We started as a pandemic distraction cast. And we will continue until we're both fully vaccinated and incubated. Definition: A tally counter is usually cased in metal and is cylindrical in shape. Part of the circle is flattened out and contains a window of plastic or glass. Inside the counter are a number of rings with the numbers from 0 to 9 in descending order going clockwise. Most counters have four such rings, allowing the user to count up to 9999. A metal ring may be attached to aid in holding the counter, and usually half the ring is bent to allow it to fold flush with the counter when not in use. - Wikipedia Credits: Daniel Tureck - sound Caio Slikta - logo Jason Shaw - Tennessee Hayride (theme music) Email us: counterprogrammingshiraarielle@gmail.com Find us on IG: @ counterprogrammingpod…

It's the countertop series! We're learning about recycled glass today. Definition: Recycled glass countertops are made from glass (sometimes from curbside recycling programs) mixed with resin or concrete. They can be made to look like natural stone (the homogenous look) OR they can have a glassy, tiled look (terrazzo style). Fun facts: - The recycled glass countertop was invented in 1996 by Don McPherson, who was at the time a student at UC Berkeley. - In 2006, investors acquired McPherson's company (Counter Productions) and renamed it Vetrazzo. - Vetrazzo is still the leading manufacturer of recycled glass countertops. It's the countertop series! Last week was all about quartz. Today, LAMINATE! Definition: Laminate is a combination of plastic and paper—interestingly, though, generally not recycled—and sometimes board. These materials are formed into a thin layer and colored or manufactured with naturalistic or textured designs. This layer is then laminated to particleboard or chip board. ( Bobvila ). Fun facts: - Laminate countertops are only a bit over 100 years old. - Laminate as a product was invented by engineers from the Westinghouse company. - The bottom layers of a laminate counter are made of brown craft paper -- literally the paper grocery bags! The DNC is formally meant to be a time where the Democratic party nominates their presidential candidate and sets out their platform for the coming four years. Hey, Counties! Each episode of Counter Programming will focus on a "counter" of some sort. Today, we learn about COUNTING sheep. Thank you to Michele and Jacob for lending your voice for this section of the episode! You can do the same. Record a voice note saying, "Hi, i'm (your name), and you're listening to Counter Programming with Shira & Arielle." Then send it to us: counterprogrammingshiraarielle@gmail.com. Insta: @ counterprogrammingpod . WELCOME to all of our new listeners. Thank you for tuning in! Counting sheep is a mental exercise used in some cultures to try to put yourself to sleep. In most instances of the practice, the person who wants the sweet release of sleep will envision an endless series of identical white sheep jumping over a fence, while counting them as they jump. The idea, in theory, is to make yourself bored while occupying your mind with something simple, repetitive, and rhythmic, because all of these things help people fall asleep. The Serta Sheep Saga Serta has been using the idea of counting sheep to sell mattresses since 2000. The idea is that the sheep are put out of business by a Serta mattresses’ ability to fix many of the common sleep issues. The sheep appear in many commercials that depict various scenarios where they lose their job -- as counting sheep -- to a couple's recent purchase or a Serta mattress. According to researchers at Oxford University , Allison G. Harvey and Suzanna Payne, from the Department of Experimental Psychology, counting sheep isn’t super effective. Harvey and Payne found that the volunteer insomniacs took longer than usual to fall asleep on the nights they were instructed to count sheep (or were told not to do anything to help them fall asleep). Bottom line: counting sheep isn't really that great a solution. Here are a few tips & tricks from Sleep Education: Keep a consistent sleep schedule Get at least 7 hours of sleep Wait until you’re actually tired to get into bed and if you can’t fall asleep in 20 minutes get out of bed until you’re tired. Only use your bed for sleeping Make your room quiet and cool Avoid blue light before bed Avoid large meals, caffeine, alcohol, and fluids before bed Leave us a review on Apple or a comment on Castbox . Hey, Counties! Each episode of Counter Programming will focus on a "counter" of some sort. Today, we learn about Count Olaf. We're joined by Margot Nissenblatt today. Record a voice note saying, "Hi, i'm (your name), and you're listening to Counter Programming with Shira & Arielle." Then send it to us: counterprogrammingshiraarielle@gmail.com. Insta: @ counterprogrammingpod . Olaf etymology : From the Old Norse name Áleifr meaning "ancestor's descendant", derived from the elements anu "ancestor" and leifr "descendant." Synopsis of Olaf: A Series of Unfortunate Events is made of thirteen novels , written by American author Daniel Handler under the pen name Lemony Snicket . They are classified " children's novels ," but the books often have a dark, mysterious feeling to them and have been classified as postmodern and metafictional writing. The books follow the turbulent lives of Violet , Klaus , and Sunny Baudelaire . After their parents' death in a fire, the children are placed in the custody of a murderous relative, Count Olaf , who attempts to steal their inheritance and, later, orchestrates numerous disasters with the help of his accomplices as the children attempt to flee. The books seem to be set in an alternate, "timeless"[16] world with stylistic similarities to both the 19th century and the 1930s, though with contemporary, and seemingly anachronistic scientific knowledge NEXT EPISODE: Count Chocula Leave us a review on Apple or a comment on Castbox . The Negroni was created at Cafe Casoni in 1919 in Florence, Italy Count Camillo Negroni was friends with the bartender Forsco Scarselli and he asked him to make him his normal drink but a bit stiffer His normal drink was an Americano (which has sweet vermouth, campari, and club soda with a lemon garnish) So the bartender replaced the club soda in his Americano with Gin...and the Negroni was born The drink became popular around Italy And Count Negroni even started his own distillery that bottled Negronis (and is still open today) Video inspiration for this episode There is some controversy regarding which "Count" "Negroni" is the inventor of The Negroni. If you are a white person trying to learn more about Black Lives Matter, follow WP4BL on instagram. check out your local chapter of Black Lives Matter . If you hear chants of “defund the police,” or “abolish the police” and want to understand more about what that would mean, two podcast recommendations for you: Today, Explained The Daily Zeitgeist Follow Counter Propaganda on Instagram. Their mission is “reclaim the narrative.” They feature a person of color each day and tell their story. We’re partial to it because it has “counter” in the title. If you’re looking for a little more context into how police forces came about, and spoiler alert, they've always been racist and were founded on principles of white supremacy, another podcast recommendation: Throughline Thank you to Ari Moskowitz for lending your voice for the intro section of the episode! #PodcastBlackOut Counter Programming Transcript: This is Counter Programming with Shira and Arielle. We started this podcast in April as a way of bringing you an alternative entertainment source to all of the grim COVID-19 news -- we wanted to give you something else to focus on. Today, we’re heading in the opposite direction. We wont be posting our regular episode as part of the #PodcastBlackOut. Today, we do want to focus on what’s going on in the world. We acknowledge what a privilege it is to be distracted by the news and to choose not to pay attention to it. We don’t want to be distracted. This week, we want to focus on what’s going on in the streets as protests continue to take place in response to the death of George Floyd in Minnesota by policeman Derrick Chauvin. As white women, we have the responsibility to be allies and to be actively anti-racist. And that means listening instead of talking. Thank you to the Sunni and Brandi of the Book of Lies podcast. They’re two podcasting sisters that we met a while back at Outlier Podcat Festival. They posted about #PodcastBlackOut -- which is an initiative to read the names of people of color who’ve been killed by police brutality -- instead of posting our regularly scheduled episode. This list of names is by no means exhaustive. Thank you. Hey, Counties! How’s that isolation going? We hope you’re healthy and safe. As always, each episode of Counter Programming will focus on a "counter" of some sort. Check back in our feed to listen to our previous episodes. Countertenor Info: A countertenor (also contra tenor) is a type of classical male singing voice whose vocal range is equivalent to that of the female contralto or mezzo-soprano voice types , generally extending from around G3 to D5 or E5. Countertenors often are baritones or tenors at core, but on rare occasions use this vocal range in performance (via Wikipedia). As explained by Lestyn Davies, a Grammy award-winning countertenor, “It’s a voice produced by not using one’s ‘modal’ or normal speaking voice, but the higher range that occurs when the combination of larynx muscles and vocal cord position are changed in such a way that the air passing through the cords vibrates a much thinner outer layer." Interview/Information about Aryeh Nussbaum Cohen: We talk about the Brooklyn Youth Chorus, Hannah Senesh Hebrew Day School, Elton John's 60th birthday party (at MSG), castration, the Church, Princeton theses, La Boheme, and so much more. Here's Aryeh's website (gorgeous, right?!) Here's the clip that we played of Aryeh singing. AMAZING! Aryeh dispels some rumors about opera, so listen in to have your perspective shifted. We talk about the practice of castration (long gone) and how it has affected the opera world to this day. Thanks for tuning in! Leave us a review on Apple or a comment on Castbox . Tweet at us. Last week, Shira and Arielle covered step counters. Check back in our feed to listen to our previous episodes. Counterfeit history: Counterfeiting money is thought to be the world's second oldest profession. It dates back to the ancient civilization of Lydia (modern day Turkey). Counterfeiters would shave off the edges of coins and mix the precious metals with base metals. In the 1690s in England, the punishment for "clipping silver" was hanging, burning at the stake, and drawing and quartering. Interview with Lisa (a counterfeit coin) Meet Lisa, a counterfeit coin who lives in a shallow dish on a dresser in Studio City. She believes she was created in the 1760s, but appraisers believe she was created in the 1930s and made to look older. She thinks a lot about what's "real" and what's "fake," beyond the scope of coins and currency. She's friendly with the bracelet she's situated next to and hopes to one day retire as a charm on that bracelet. Learn more in this interview! Top scams: The Money Painter - JS G Boggs (started drawing in the '80s) He was an artist and drew money. He never sold his counterfeit money but he would use it to pay for items and then would keep his receipts. Albert Talton (2000s) He was able to produce and counterfeit more than $7M in faux currency which was used before he was caught in 2007. Frank Bourassa (2010s) Was able to pass off more than $250M in fake money. Only made $20 bills. He still knows where the missing $50M is, and he is out and about since he only spent 1.5 months in jail in 2014. Wayne Victor Denis - (the 90s) Produced $12M in fake money (only got 4 years in prison) and wrote a memoir from jail about the experience. Viktor Baranov (1970s) Replicated the most complex Soviet coin, using a unique machine that he invented. He was one of the first people to be caught and people still use his techniques today.
