Y’all, when I came across the Fuerte and Fearless clothing line, I fell in love with the brand, the message, AND the shirts! I HAD to know more about who was behind it all—and with a little investigating I connected with Fuerte and Fearless founder Jeanette Guardiola-Woods. Do you know the difference between honoring a culture and appropriating it? Why is appropriation such a big deal? I’m diving into these questions with my friend, author and yoga unity activist Susanna Barkataki, whose work focuses on using spiritual & DEI tools to uplift the underrepresented.  Susanna is shining a light on how the Western world is marginalizing yoga (because “Namastay in bed” is NOT okay!), and she's on a mission to bring yoga back to its roots by confronting the appropriation of its sacred culture. Her book “Embrace Yoga’s Roots: Courageous Ways to Deepen Your Yoga Practice” is just one way she’s taking on toxic yoga culture through education. In this episode, Susanna is joining me to share the stories & context for why she is passionate about teaching yoga’s origins, how to be creative with your OWN culture for your biz brand, and what y'all can do to STOP appropriating and START appreciating other folks' traditions & cultures. Listen now to hear more about: How Susanna is taking on the sea of whiteness in the yoga world Cultural appropriation as a door to systemic inequities The problems with glamorizing yoga How puns can escalate into exploitation of BIPOC What cultural appreciation ACTUALLY looks like (and what tools you need to be empowered to make the RIGHT choices) Why she’s bringing social justice & DEI into her yoga work Unpacking decolonization (and why it's NOT a metaphor) How words of social justice are co-opted and misused Susanna’s advice for being authentic, avoiding performative action, and aligning your values Why it’s EVERYBODY’S responsibility to live the practices of anti-racism and DEI  And so much more! Y’all… I just had to get this out. I’ve been wanting to talk about leadership this month, and the “Karen” of the moment, Rachel Hollis, and her microaggressions and nonapology on Instagram last week brought this conversation forward that I just needed to have with you. If you haven’t seen the conversation about what Rachel Hollis has said and done, it was talking about her privilege, wrapped in whiteness, in classism, in elitism, and in meritocracy and the things that so many of us are trying to stop and I have so much to say on this.   So in this episode, I’m bringing you a conversation about what Rachel Hollis got wrong here, how this applies to leadership, what lessons I want you to take away from this to become a better leader yourself, and the 3 things we need to do to truly make change.   Listen now to hear more about: What leadership IS and ISN’T Why we need to continue to talk about microagressions (and why they are JUST as harmful as the more obvious expressions of racism and oppression) Formal vs unformal power and why it matters What the core of this work REALLY is This important thing that makes you a more effective coach, teacher, and educator and how Rachel Hollis is missing the mark   Short on time? It’s time to take a hard look at how you are spending your time and money on business coaching. Are you getting a return on your investments? It’s about moving your clients through transformational journeys, and I know you’re passionate about your clients and what you do! But when you hear all the noise online encouraging you to focus on “racing for those six figures” and see other coaches out there doing harm, you might be thinking it may be time to put some regulation around it.    Listen in as I unpack where I stand on this, what it ACTUALLY means to be certified as a coach, my advice for you if you’re considering a coaching certification for your own practice, and how we can have a real impact on the industry.   Listen now to hear more about:   What you need to know about the differences between certification and licensure and what they mean for the industry   How to choose a high-quality certification program if you are going to pursue one Some of the MOST IMPORTANT questions to ask when deciding on a coaching program that maximizes your professional experience, skills, and impact What there isn’t enough of in the coaching industry The MOST IMPORTANT things you shouldn't forget about as you grow your business And much more!   Short on time? In our businesses, figuring out which collaborations are value-aligned and which are not — especially out here in the “Wild West'' of online business — is so important. Clients are asking for the receipts that the collaborators you choose share their beliefs, especially in this social climate. Will your business be ready to show clients the proof? It seems vast majorities of us have worked in places where toxic and unhealthy business cultures are rampant. You may feel that you are the problem, but I am here to tell you that is NOT true! Toxic work cultures are deeply rooted in oppression and replicate the nastiness of our society. So, what do you do if you work in a culture that is unhealthy? Are you a business owner wondering if your DEI and anti-racism values align with your business policies? I’ll show you what steps to take in this episode, as we dive into the TOP FIVE signs of a toxic business culture. My best tips will help you create a liberatory work environment and be an accountable leader, since patterns of clear DEI and anti-racism violations have no place in a business culture that claims to be inclusive. Once you know better, you can do better!  Listen in to hear more about: How to spot toxic work environments (and what makes healthy business cultures!) These top five signs of a toxic business culture will help you be self-reflective and self-aware of your DEI and anti-racism values How you can utilize data to identify patterns of disparity and create accountability  Why critical feedback should not lead to a fear of retaliation (and how it should improve your business instead!) There’s conflicting advice as to how a business should be showing up online to their followers. What should you share? Should your anti-racism and DEI initiatives be a part of your posts? Are these posts truly fully aligned with your values and not just an externally motivated performance? Are you prepared to hold the weight of what you are posting online? In today’s episode, I’m diving into what it means to be performative online, how you can avoid it, what you can do to align yourself with your values and commitments to show up as the REAL you, and how to make a plan to have clear values front and center for your business online so that you can reach the clients who share those values, too. I’ll talk about: Should you be sharing more about anti-racism and DEI topics on your social media? My biggest tips on what you should (and shouldn’t!) be posting Why you should STOP performing for others online and start authentically communicating your truths How performative actions will leave you and your team feeling unprepared to handle defensiveness (and what you can do to be ready!) Why you MUST be trained in the skills to facilitate a safe space for DEI on your social media These simple steps will get your actions ALIGNED with your commitments and values My MOST IMPORTANT lesson about not being performative so you can act from your truth and show up as YOU And much more! 2020 did NOT go as planned for anyone, and it definitely asked us to all show up in a different way than we planned a year ago. But it did have some awesome things, like causing people to FINALLY listen to conversations around DEI, justice, and anti-racism and start noticing that we have to do things differently — including in the coaching industry. So as we begin 2021, we’re back with weekly episodes of the podcast, bringing you things we can be doing differently, things we can be doing better, and ways we can reframe the way we approach and think about business so that we can be running businesses that are impactful with world changing implications. We’re back with an episode on what we’ve been up to since the podcast was on hiatus, the impact that was made, and where we’re going in 2021!   I’m diving into: What I thought I would be doing for 2020 vs what ACTUALLY did happen The thing we don’t talk about enough in the coaching industry (and why it’s so important to start focusing on it) Dealing with cancelled travel plans and events in the wake of the pandemic The switch that was flipped in 2020 and started to finally wake people up How the Black Lives Matter movement spilled over into different industries (and why this was so important) Managing concerns, worry, and frustration for those of us working around anti-oppression, anti-racism, and DEI work The work that is ahead of us in 2021 (and what we’re planning in our business for THIS year!) How we incorporate our beliefs and passion for DEI into our team and business and our team culture Creating sustainable, successful, highly impactful and affordable programs in your business The shift we helped clients make and the results their communities noticed because of them And more!   Apply for your spot in my Embodied Impact Mastermind: http://www.trudilebron.com/embodied Connect with me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/trudilebron/
