    'Bittersweet': Historic Marietta Rectory Razed

    'Bittersweet': Historic Marietta Rectory Razed

From the BG Ad Group Studio this is your news minute on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Today is Friday, May 17th, and I'm Keith Ippolito.

    'Bittersweet': Historic Marietta Rectory Razed

Saint Joseph Catholic Church has embarked on a significant yet bittersweet demolition project that involved tearing down its historic rectory in Marietta. Nearly two centuries of history are being torn down as the rectory undergoes demolition due to severe safety concerns.

Monsignor John Walsh highlighted that mold, asbestos, and lead had made the rectory unsafe for its residents and visitors. The damage, which dates back to Christmas Day 2022, was caused by a burst pipe that led to extensive water damage, forcing priests to relocate.

Despite efforts from Cobb Landmarks to preserve the historical Sugar Hill House portion, the church decided to demolish the entire rectory. Built in 1852 and used as a field hospital during the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, the rectory holds deep historical significance.

Facing over $2 million in restoration costs, the church chose to build a new rectory for about $1.2 million instead. While the decision was difficult, Monsignor Walsh emphasized that safety was paramount.

STORY 1: Missing Cobb Teen Found Dead from Apparent Suicide

Cobb County Police Department reported the tragic discovery of 17-year-old Reed Springer's body, who had been reported missing earlier. Reed was found dead near his east Cobb home, believed to have died by suicide. Police do not suspect foul play. Reed had left his house around 12:34 p.m. on Tuesday and was reported missing later that evening. Stress over finals was cited as a potential factor. The Cobb County Medical Examiner will determine the official cause of death.

STORY 2: Cobb School District Map Debated in Appeals Court

Lawyers presented arguments in federal appeals court over whether a lower court's ruling that the Cobb County School District's map was likely an unconstitutional racial gerrymander should be upheld. The original lawsuit, initiated in June 2022, challenged the 2022 school board map. The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals heard oral arguments on the district's appeal. While the map in question is no longer in effect due to a new map signed into law by Governor Brian Kemp, the legal battle continues. The appeals court also questioned the school district's standing in the case, with Judge Ed Carnes criticizing their handling of the lawsuit. A ruling from the appeals court is pending.

STORY 3: County OKs De-annexation of Cobb School District Property

The Cobb County School District, after selecting a site for its new $50 million event center, is seeking to annex a 10-acre portion of its property into Marietta. The proposed annexation, approved by the Cobb Board of Commissioners, aims to bring all district-owned property near the chosen location into the city. The event center, planned adjacent to the district's headquarters, will host various events and activities. Additionally, the commission approved an annexation request from Powder Springs to develop a single-family home community on county property. This move aligns with the district's and developers' plans for future projects in the area.

STORY 4: Marietta Schools Considering New Cell Phone Policy

Marietta's Board of Education is considering a plan to restrict cellphone and smartwatch usage for middle school students by providing locking pouches for their devices. Superintendent Grant Rivera proposed the initiative to curb distractions, bullying, and anxiety caused by technology and social media. The pouches, to be locked by staff during school hours, aim to improve student focus and mental health. Exceptions will be made for medical needs, and communication protocols will be established for emergencies. Stakeholder feedback is being sought before the policy is finalized. Board members expressed support for the initiative, recognizing the potential benefits for students' well-being and academic performance.
