This week comes one of the most inspirational stories you will hear. I’m joined by Jon Watts, who, at the age of 18 found himself in prison. During his time inside, he turned his life around, completed all 3 levels of the Duke of Edinburgh Award and was released as a full qualified chef. He worked at Jamie Oliver’s Italian restaurant before going on to set up his street food stall and catering business. It would have to take a special someone for me to bring the crew out of London, away from the set, to film an episode. And Raymond Blanc is indeed that special someone. TW: Conversations about birth trauma and eating disorders feature in this episode. I am back!!! It only took a year but I am here, live and direct, Season 10 baby! I am overjoyed to have Calum Franklin on this podcast this week! Today calls for a celebration! Today marks the 100th episode!!!! I cannot believe we have some so far! I am finally joined by Hollywood royalty!! It only took 8 seasons to get there! This week the powerhouse that is Clare Smyth MBE, joins me in my humble kitchen to talk all about being a Michelin starred chef, running 2 restaurants on opposite sides of the world and what it’s really like for a female chef in the restaurant industry. To commemorate the Season 7 finale, I have my mum, Susan Young, on!! You are in for such a treat to get to meet the woman who has inspired me, fed me and loved me my whole life! I felt like after 7 seasons it was time to introduce the queen in my life, my best friend, my “momager”, my disco diva! Mum delves into her incredible childhood between Iran, Norfolk and London and how it set her up for life. She goes back to when her mother met her Iranian father at a dance in the 1950s in England, and subsequently moved back to Iran where my mother became quite ill. She was brought back to the UK, had her identity changed and didn’t meet her real father until she was 17! She reminisces about coming down to London aged 18 to become a Bunny Girl at the original Playboy Club in the 70s, meeting her first Iranian boyfriend and embarking on a career in the antiques and jewellery business. We cover her whole life in food; how she was taught to make Iranian food, where her ethos comes from when thinking about cooking and making delicious meals. We reminisce about the best dishes of my childhood, her gourmet packed lunches and what makes a great home cook. I love my mum so much, and she really is the foundation to my knowledge of food, taste, flavour and cooking. I owe so much to her, particularly my appreciation of eating. I met Chris Baber over food - of course - at an amazing party at Nobu full of the best canapes! We positioned ourselves right by the kitchen doors – in the firing line, and now it was time to get him over for a chat! I’ve followed Sabrina Ghayour’s career for a while now, and so it was a huge pleasure to finally have her on the podcast. She’s just launched her new cookbook, Persiana Everyday, which was a tough process to write as she wrote it through lockdown, whilst dealing with all the things complexities that have come with the last 2 years. I am so happy I have finally met the man himself, Glyn Fussell. And he came to my house. And he loves my granola! I sat down with one of my childhood culinary heroes (and my dad’s!), Ken Hom. He recorded from his gorgeous house in France, where he splits his time between there and Thailand. Ken is one of the most celebrated TV chefs of our generation, bringing the flavours of Chinese cooking to our homes. I absolutely loved sitting down with my good friend, Eric Lanlard, the French pâtissier extraordinaire. What a charming chap musician Jack Savoretti is! It had been a long time coming but we finally sat down to talk all about his Italian heritage, childhood family dinners and some of his naughty food vices! He’s currently on tour so we talk all about finally being out there performing live, his new album, Europiana and he opens up about the music industry; the difficulties he overcame, the time he was asked to change his name as it wasn’t “British” enough (!) and he discusses stepping away from the industry. This conversation felt very full circle to me – I was first introduced to Jack in 2012 when I was taken to his concert in Shepherds Bush – close to where I live now! When I started Crazy Sexy Food, I wrote a list of dream guests I’d love to have on. If you’d seen it, you would have laughed and told me “Yeah Right!”. So, when I got the call a couple weeks ago that Nobu Matsuhisa was in town to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Nobu London Park Lane, and he was doing a select number of interviews and that CSF was in the running I could not believe it! But here we are. And here I was, in this episode, sitting down with the man himself discussing his life in food, dealing with childhood trauma, setting up his business 50 years ago and his meeting with Robert De Niro. Nobu is a gentle but very fun man. He was so incredibly open and hospitable; this really has been the greatest honour. He eloquently discussed the hardships in his life, namely when one of his restaurants burnt down and he lost everything. This in turn lead to depression and suicidal thoughts. He managed to use his inner strength and family support to start again, and here we are, all these years later, and he’s still at the helm of the global empire! This was an honour of the highest level, and being in Nobu’s presence is something I will never forget.
