It's still WHAT WOULD WALT HAVE DONE? MONTH on Escape From Vault Disney! And for our second belated episode of What Would Walt Have Done? Month, the randomizer goes all the way back to 1976 to pick an ambitious misfire released just in time for America's bicentennial, a would-be epic treasure hunt adventure set in the Reconstruction-era American South that aims to be Budget Mark Twain by way of Budget Robert Louis Stevenson, depicting America as a chaotic lawless hellscape where former slaves run back to their plantations, snake oil medicine can be refashioned into Molotov cocktails, impromptu hoedowns turn into attempted gangbangs at the drop of a hat and we're supposed to take the big evil frightening villain seriously even though his name is "Spangler." Also the guy who voiced Prince John is in it but he doesn't suck his thumb even once. It's WHAT WOULD WALT HAVE DONE? MONTH on Escape From Vault Disney, as we devote March 2024 to movies, featurettes and/or TV specials produced by Walt Disney Productions during that odd, awkward inbetween time from 1968-1984, after Walt died but before Eisner took over! And for our first episode of What Would Walt Have Done? Month, we're joined by the man who literally wrote the soon-to-be-released book on that era, Meet the Robinsons director Stephen Anderson! And for our topic, the randomizer goes all the way back to 1977, the summer when Star Wars had the unmitigated audacity to dominate the box office 35 years before Disney owned it. The only competition Disney had that summer was a Herbie sequel and an animated talking mice movie, so the Disney execs thought "Hey, y'know what Walt would've done? He would've paired the animated talking mice movie with 48 minutes of documentary-style footage of a bear and a raccoon in the woods just kinda wandering around, narrated by an obscure country singer who, for thoroughly unclear reasons, is named 'Mayf Nutter.' That'll steer audiences away from Luke Skywalker blowing up the Death Star for sure!" Are you starting to understand why Disney struggled in the 70s? This week, the randomizer goes all the way back to 2019 to pick yet another NatGeo special! And since it's become abundantly clear that every NatGeo special is exactly the same, I'm gonna devote the rest of this description to talking about the life of actor/comedian Chris Elliott. Born in 1960 in New York City as the fifth and youngest child of Bob Elliott of Bob & Ray fame, Mr. Elliott was hired as a production assistant on Late Night with David Letterman and soon began playing various wacky characters on-camera. This led to supporting roles in such films as Manhunter, The Abyss, Groundhog Day and There's Something About Mary, as well as starring roles in his own FOX primetime sitcom Get A Life and the feature film vehicle Cabin Boy. More recently, in the 2010s he had his own Adult Swim series Eagleheart, and a regular supporting role on Schitt's Creek. Chris Elliott's surreal, offbeat style of humor has been a comedy staple for over forty years and counting, and he continues to be an always-welcome character actor to this day. This week we're bypassing the randomizer for yet another Guest's Choice episode, which in this case doubles as a belated Christmas episode AND triples as an even-more-belated Halloween episode! Our good friend and newly-sentient amorphous blob of characters Garrett Smith "makes" us watch one of the most groundbreaking animated features of all time, a 1993 stop-motion animated borderline-experimental quasi-operatic tone poem of a film about the shenanigans that ensue when the bored leader of an annual tradition finds a buncha magic trees containing the other annual traditions and decides to colonize one of them, filled with gorgeous sumptuous visuals, haunting musical numbers and some guy's name in the title who didn't direct it and only visited the set maybe ten times. This week, for our belated second Christmas episode of this winter season, the randomizer goes back to 2021 to pick another piece of Disney+ original content that continued the grand holiday tradition of the televised Yule Log. Hand-crafted from paper art by Brittney Lee, Walt Disney Animation Studios' acclaimed visual development artist on Frozen and Frozen 2, this warm and inviting hearthside scene sets a festive holiday mood Stylized cut-out paper flames combine with imaginative visual effects (including a touch of snow provided by Elsa) and silhouetted images of Anna, Elsa, Olaf, Kristoff and Sven to add to your holiday fun and enjoyment. This week, for our first Christmas episode of 2023, the randomizer goes all the way back to 2020 to pick a heartwarming holiday special made when the world was struggling through an unprecedented catastrophic global pandemic, so naturally The Disney Channel thought it'd be a swell idea to take a quartet of promising young actors from the ZOMBIES movies (I swear we didn't mean to cover two ZOMBIES tie-in specials in a row, the randomizer just works in mysterious ways sometimes), entice them to enter Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom after hours with the false promise of an empty park and no lines for the rides, then sadistically force them to complete a bunch of meaningless tasks involving bike-taxiing, apple-throwing, candy-cane-canoeing, letter-sorting, water-balancing, table-setting and bridge-running, all while emotionally manipulating them into thinking holiday magic itself would disappear forever if they failed to complete all this arbitrary nonsense on time. David Ganssle and I finally wrap up our conversation where we said a few words about every item on the Not On Disney+ Month shortlist! In this one, we go through another, shorter list of Disney-owned movies and shows that I considered for the shortlist, but ultimately didn't make the cut.
Yet again, me and David Ganssle continue making our way through the Not On Disney+ Month shortlist in alphabetical order! In this one, we briefly discuss the original 1997 Under Wraps, Victory Through Air Power, The Watcher In the Woods, "Weird Al" Yankovic: There's No Going Home, Winnie the Pooh and a Day for Eeyore and The Wuzzles!
This week, for our second of two Halloween episodes of the year, the randomizer goes all the way back to 2022 to cover that time the Disney Channel cartoon about noseless cornlike rural caricatures spent an entire half-hour special shamelessly promoting the trilogy of Disney Channel movie musicals about various high-school-age monsters who don't act like monsters except when they do. If that sounds random and arbitrary to you, try recording a podcast about it where exactly one out of four people has seen any full episodes of the cartoon, and no one has seen any of the movies. Or better yet, don't, cuz we already did. Join Tony Goldmark, Rob Bergman, Shoebox and a Surprise Special Guest as they get bitten by a ZOMBI-THON WITH BIG CITY GREENS! Check out my guests' stuff! Frankenweenie (1984)

Frankenweenie (1984)

2023-10-1801:05:271

This week, for our first of two Halloween episodes of the year, the randomizer goes all the way back to 1984 to cover one of the earliest live-action efforts of a rising young talent by the name of Tim Burton, who in this landmark early work explored many of the very same themes and motifs that would later become ubiquitous in his filmography, including the juxtaposition of mundane suburban life with horror-fantasy tropes, the celebration of misunderstood outsiders over bland conformists, and of course cool-looking German expressionist gothic art design absolutely slathered all over the screen. At the time it was a unique, exemplary work of art from an obvious future auteur, so naturally Disney buried it like an undead dog's bone and only released it eight years later after its director made freakin' Batman. Join Tony Goldmark, Haley Baker Callahan, David Ganssle and Gaby Tyrrell as they obnoxiously point out that it's Frankenweenie's monster, not FRANKENWEENIE (1984)!  Watch the extended cut of Frankenweenie (1984) on YouTube: https://youtu.be/2rcPe9sojpc?si=0aP7tzSHgih91ki_&t=352 Read my livetweet of Frankenweenie (1984): https://twitter.com/efvdpodcast/status/1448840318128852997  Watch Diamanda Hagan's review of Life Returns, featuring me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k75BYiDdWec  Check out my guests' stuff! This week we're bypassing the randomizer for yet another Guest's Choice episode, in which our good friend Madeline Maye makes us watch one of the first episodes of a 1988 ABC Saturday morning cartoon produced by Walt Disney Television Animation, a series that came about when the executives said "So yeah, Winnie the Pooh's a big popular brand for us, let's just slap together a cute little Pooh show to sell some more plush toys to pre-schoolers, it doesn't need to be mindblowing or anything." To which the writers, artists and showrunners responded, "We are going to make an episode about Rabbit looking after a baby bird that will rip every last audience member's still-beating heart right out of their asses and show it to them before they die drowning in their own salty tears." Join Tony Goldmark, Madeline Maye, Chris Nebergall and Renie Rivas as they count all the bees in the hive and chase all the clouds from the sky back to the days of THE NEW ADVENTURES OF WINNIE THE POOH, season one, episode four, "Find Her, Keep Her!" Yet again, me and David Ganssle continue making our way through the Not On Disney+ Month shortlist in alphabetical order! In this one, we briefly discuss Ten Who Dared, That Thing You Do!, They Might Be Giants: Here Come the ABCs, Titan A.E., the 2015 Tomorrowland movie and the 1997 Tower of Terror movie!
UPDATE: And, of course, mere minutes before this minisode went public, they announced that Spider-Man: Far From Home would arrive on Disney+ on November 3! Yet again, me and David Ganssle continue making our way through the Not On Disney+ Month shortlist in alphabetical order! In this one, we briefly discuss Spider-Man: Far From Home, Sport Goofy In Soccermania, a bunch of Disney park attraction videos (specifically the original Star Tours pre-show and ride film, The Disney Studios Story from the Backstage Studio Tour, Back To Never Land from The Magic of Disney Animation, Michael & Mickey from Inside the Magic: Special Effects and Production Tour, and the pre-show queue videos from Mickey's House and The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror), the 1993 Super Mario Bros. movie and The Sweatbox!
Yet again, me and David Ganssle continue making our way through the Not On Disney+ Month shortlist in alphabetical order! In this one, we briefly discuss the 1997 comedy RocketMan, the 2006 remake of The Shaggy Dog, The Shnookums and Meat Funny Cartoon Show, the infamous "Michael Jackson" episode of The Simpsons (S3E1, "Stark Raving Dad"), So Dear To My Heart, the 1983 adaptation of Ray Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes, Son of Flubber and Song of the South.
At long last, this week the randomizer wraps up Patreon Request Month 2023 by going all the way back to 2012 to pick Nick F's request for an episode of the OTHER project titled "Once Upon A (something)" that first aired on ABC in which Disney tried to cram every last Disney character onscreen together. Specifically a season one episode that had the bold vision to say, "hey, remember when Disney retold a tale as old as time so absolutely perfectly that it became the first-ever animated feature nominated for Best Picture? We can probably do it better." They failed of course, but along the way they sure did give us an episode chock full of stupid character names, bad CGI backgrounds, annoying maniacal cackling, slutty goth waitresses, sneezing pharmacists, the kidnapping and excessive caning of a drinkware thief, and what the hell, a scene where a human being gets turned into a flower. Join Tony Goldmark, Charley Marlowe, Madeline Maye, Chris Nebergall and Veronika Vexed as they enter Shrek's outhouse and wipe their asses with a torn-out storybook page that begins with ONCE UPON A TIME, season one, episode twelve, "Skin Deep!" It's Week #4 of Patreon Request Month 2023, and the randomizer is going all the way back to 2023 to pick Tony Cogan's request for two specific episodes of the second volume of the series that boldly combined the two most reasonable fandoms known to man, Star Wars and anime! In season two, this series expanded its scope from just anime to animation styles from around the world, including, in these two episodes, those two countries that have always gotten along swimmingly with each other, Ireland and England!. Ireland's Cartoon Saloon studio, of The Secret of Kells and Wolfwalkers fame, brings us a striking, dark, violent, morally ambiguous fable about everything one must sacrifice to obtain one's goals in life, and England's Aardman Animation brings us a bright sunny claymation romp through what can only be described as "we have podracing at home," complete with slinky droids, Vader hairstyles and freaky-deaky claymation hippie wookiees! It's Week #3 of Patreon Request Month 2023, and the randomizer is going all the way back to 2007 to pick Jinx Productions and Jonathan Librach's request for the long-awaited (though I'm not sure by who) live action feature film adaptation of a 1960s animated series that millions of people watched in reruns while enthusiastically cheering "okay, I guess this exists!" And the movie boldly exists as well, transforming the uniquely-designed clothed bipedal dog-like characters in the cartoon into boring ordinary dogs, replacing Wally Cox's cartoony voice with the snarky rasp of the guy from Mallrats, and casting Tyrion Lannister and Kronk as the bad guys and unfairly expecting them to carry the whole damn movie when they don't really seem to feel like doing that. Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves

It's Week #2 of Patreon Request Month 2023, and the randomizer is going all the way back to 1997 to pick Andrew Weiss's request for Disney's very first live-action direct-to-video sequel, continuing the wacky adventures of Wayne Szalinski, the genius inventor played by easily one of the six or seven funniest people from SCTV (that's not an insult, they were just all really great and it's really hard to rank them) who miraculously invented a shrink ray that could solve world hunger and revolutionize practically every industry known to man, but instead was mostly used to shrink kids, shrink parents, shrink audiences and briefly turn a toddler into a kaiju. This third movie had the lowest budget of the three, and hoo boy does it show. This week, the randomizer kicks off Patreon Request Month 2023 by going all the way back to 2010 to pick Gordhan Rajani's request for an episode of an animated Marvel series that aired on Cartoon Network, in which the superheroes looked like Chibi knockoffs, called themselves "Squaddies" for some cosmically appalling reason, lived in a town with very few non-superheroes, and elected Stan Lee as their mayor until they didn't. Becuase I'm bored

I'm trying this thing where I watch the media in question after the prelude before they talk about it. makes me feel included.

Watched this the first time in a long time a few days ago. I really hoped the donkey scene wasn't going to be as traumatizing as it was at 8 years old. It still is. I had to stop watching for a moment, after the first donkey cries, "I wanna go home to my mama!" Nearly turned it off after the other one starts screaming, "Mamaaaaa!!!" I also called my mama and told her I loved her...so something came out of it
