State of the Theme Parks 2024 It's that time of year when we look at the current state of the Disney and Universal theme parks in America, and talk about the most exciting changes, additions, and re-imaginings that have been announced for the coming year. Join us for the 2024 State of the Theme Parks Address! Topics covered incude: As of just a few days ago, theme park reservations are no longer needed for most guests at Walt Disney World, and park hopping is open all day long. To accommodate park hopping, inter-park busses will now start running at 10 am. Interestingly, there is currently no bus from MK to EPCOT- all guests hopping between those two parks are being sent via Monorail. Also recently returned, is the Disney Dining Plan and Quick Service Dining Plan at Walt Disney World Resort. The plan features some significant changes to price and inclusions from the last time it was offered. Coming later this summer, the fan favorite Free Dining Plan promotion. Comes with strings attached - requires Disney+ subscription, a longer stay, and the aforementioned changes to the DDP The Country Bears Jamboree is closing very soon for re-imagining, and the latest release from Disney confirms my fears that they're not just adding a segment with Disney songs on to the beloved show, but totally changing the show to be all Disney songs, with one song that "fans will recognize" - I'm guessing Big Al will still interrupt with Blood on the Saddle. Rock and Roller Coaster is down for a lengthy refurb - AGAIN. Disney says there is not current change coming to the theme, although the internet feels the time is right considering recent allegations against Steven Tyler. Construction will soon start on a DVC member lounge somewhere in MK Scaffolding is starting to come down from Tiana's Bayou Adventure as exterior work and landscaping is nearing completion. The exterior of the mountain is now covered almost entirely with plants to fit the bayou theme. Disney again mentions large future investment in MK, and specifically teases another announcement for Frontierland, making a future retheme of Pecos Bill's to Tiana's Place seem more likely. Paradise Pier Hotel at Disneyland completes its transformation with a grand reopening as Pixar Pier Hotel on January 30. To celebrate all things Pixar and the new hotel, Disneyland and Disney California Adventure will be hosting the return of Pixar Fest from April 26-August 4, featuring an all new pixar themed daytime parade at DCA, and the return of Together Forever, a Pixar Nighttime Spectacular at Disneyland. May 24, Fantasmic! returns to Disneyland with new special effects, a reimagined finale battle between Mickey and Mileficent, and the return of the iconic Peter Pan scene aboard the Sailing Ship Columbia Run Disney finally returned to Disneyland - the half marathon weekend just wrapped up, and Sept. 5-8 will feature an all new Halloween half marathon weekend, Disneyland will expand the plaza between New Orleans Square and Haunted Mansion into a park like area with space for live entertainment. The grounds and queue of the Haunted Mansion will also be expanded to give guests a tour of the mansion's gardens, and guests can visit the carriage house which will house a brand new Haunted Mansion shop. Dreamworks Animation land will replace Wood Woodpecker's KidZone in Universal Studios Florida some time in 2024 As always, a huge thank you to our sponsor, Key to the World Travel. Travel Trends for 2024   It’s that time of year when we’re all figuring out what the next 12 months are going to look like, and the internet is full of suggestions on how to make sure our lives are on trend in 2024. Let’s take a look at the 10  hottest travel trends we’ve got our eyes on this year. The trends we cover include: Astro Tourism - Keep your eyes on the skies and seek out the best spots to view the Northern Lights, meteors, comets, and more as you explore the globe. Cool-cationing - Forget the beach! As summers get hotter, vacationers are seeking out cooler climates to the north and far south for their holidays. Gig Tripping - Follow your favorite band on their summer tour, catch a bucket list show at a legendary venue, or search the globe for the hottest music festival. Skip-gen Travel - Grandparents are leaving their adult children at home, and taking the grandkids out for bucketlist adventures or to share meaningful places and experiences. Luxury Rail Travel - 5 star hotels on wheels, travel in style without the stress of traffic or airports. Wild Feasting - Foraging for ultra-local ingredients to help prepare a meal, or dining al-fresco after a cooking lesson. Travelers are looking to go beyond eating local delicacies, and actually eat with locals. Dupe Destinations - Ditch the crowds, and look for spots that give a similar flavor, but aren't overrun with tourists. Set-Jetting - tourists are seeking out locations where their favorite prestige television shows and movies were filmed for a chance to get closer to the action. Authentic Cultural Immersion - parasailing and wax museums are fun, but travelers in 2024 want a chance to experience daily life and culture in the places they visit. Frontier Exploration - whether they're braving the Drake Passage to see Antarctica, or pushing personal boundaries by trying strange new foods, daring adventures, or unfamiliar locales, travelers in 2024 are all about going to undiscovered places. Disney World One Star Reviews 2023 Lately, we’ve been seeing a lot of posts on social media with hilarious one-star reviews visitors have left for some of America’s most popular and stunning national parks. That got us thinking - what do reviewers on popular sites like tripadvisor.com have to say about the Walt Disney World Resort? The results are definitely a mixed bag.  Some of them are hilarious, some of them are infuriating, and most of them have at least a little bit of the truth tucked in between the unreadable spelling errors and major entitlement  issues. While most of the complaints are just so ridiculous they’re funny, the legitimate concerns could be fixed by either doing some research (or even better, book with a travel advisor like the experts at Key to the World Travel!), or learning to manage expectations and remember that you’re not the only person hoping to have the perfect Disney vacation.    Join Dan and Jeff as they share their favorite bottom-of-the-barrel reviews for The Most Magical Place On Earth, as well as some great tips on how to avoid making the same mistakes as these disgruntled reviewers. In this episode, we dive into our recent adventure at Universal Orlando's Halloween Horror Nights! Rain or shine, or even a tornado warning, we braved it all to experience this event without any interruptions. Armed with Express Passes, we conquered seven houses in just a few hours – now that's impressive considering the long lines! Our favorite picks this year? "The Last of Us" and "Stranger Things" blew our minds, as did Yeti:Campground Kills and of course the always terrifying Universal Monsters: Unmasked. We spill the beans on our strategies for getting the most out of this Universal Orlando event, like the "stay and scream" option and the RIP tour choices. The attention to detail and the immersive experiences in these haunted houses at Halloween Horror Nights are mind-blowing. Beyond the haunted houses, we wandered through scare zones and enjoyed all the entertainment Universal Orlando's Halloween Horror Nights has to offer. Don't even get us started on the themed food options; we indulged like there was no tomorrow. We're incredibly grateful to have been there at Universal Orlando's Halloween Horror Nights, and we can't wait for the Christmas celebrations. But that's not all! We're breaking the news on Universal's year-round horror attraction in Las Vegas, Universal Horror Unleashed, the first year-round attraction inspired by Hollywood Horror Nights. Featuring multiple highly immersive horror experiences, including mazes, dining, and a bar, this spot is on our spooky bucket list for sure.  We encourage you to pack your bags, grab your scare squad, and venture into the fog for Universal Orlando's Halloween Horror Nights. In this podcast episode, we are joined by a special guest, Cameron Matthews, to recount our remarkable Monorail Pub Crawl escapade at Walt Disney World. The Monorail Pub Crawl is an intriguing journey involving visits to diverse establishments situated within the hotels along the Disney World monorail line. During this adventure, we had the opportunity to savor delectable food and beverages offered at these venues. Commencing our crawl at the Polynesian Resort, our first stop was Trader Sam's Grog Grotto. We soaked in the lively ambiance at the Tambu Lounge before progressing to the Grotto. Notably, the concoctions at this spot were exceptional, with noteworthy recommendations being the lapu-lapu and back scratcher drinks. Moving forward, the next destination was the Grand Floridian, where the Enchanted Rose beckoned. This venue stood out for its sophisticated and elegant setting, coupled with creatively crafted cocktails. This strategic crawl approach advised listeners to initiate our journey with a lunch visit to Steakhouse 71 and conclude at either Trader Sam's or Enchanted Rose to ensure a pleasurable experience devoid of excessive crowds. A focal point of our discussion revolved around the distinctiveness of Trader Sam's as a Tiki bar offering immersive interactions and captivating special effects. This was emphasized as an essential must-visit. Conversely, the versatility of Enchaged Rose, boasting three distinct bars and ample space for numerous patrons, was highlighted. Our narrative featured an array of exceptional experiences at each location, encompassing an assortment of drinks, including some clandestine menu selections. Notably, the culinary offerings at Citrico's and Steakhouse 71 received praise for their excellence. As our conversation neared its conclusion, prospects of forthcoming pub crawls were explored, with notions like a Skyliner Pub Crawl and a Disneyland-based bar crawl surfacing as exciting ideas. In this episode, we explore the world of theme park dining, focusing on hot dogs, corn dogs, sausages, and more. We discuss unique offerings like the jalapeno popper corn dog and the diverse range of hot dogs at Disneyland, Walt Disney World and Universal parks. From exotic options like Korean bulgogi sausage to classic bratwurst, we share our excitement for trying different varieties. First, we’re amazed by the selection of unique, creative, and downright tasty corn dogs at Disneyland, and are very excited that Blue Ribbon Corn Dogs is coming to Walt Disney World’s Boardwalk.     We highlight the quality sausages at Downtown Disney’s BB Wolf’s Sausage Co., EPCOT’s Biergarten and The Leaky Cauldron at Universal Studios, and the impressive selection at Universal City Walk’s Hot Dog Hall of Fame. Our episode concludes with a rundown of mouthwatering hot dog styles and a nod to vegan options. We encourage listeners to share the show and recommend Key to the World Travel. Beating The Heat at Disney World This week, the Gold Key Adventurers Society gathers to share some tips on how to beat the heat while visiting Walt Disney World in Florida during the peak summer season. To avoid the scorching heat, we suggest going to the parks early in the morning and late in the evening, taking breaks during the middle of the day, and spending time at the pool when it's hottest. For those staying overnight or longer, choosing to stay at a Walt Disney World resort hotel can enhance the overall experience by taking advantage of early entry and extended park hours, and hopping between parks to avoid the heat from the hottest ones, such as Animal Kingdom and Epcot. When it comes to seeking ways to escape the heat, we share with listeners the various indoor attractions that provide a good respite. The Magic Kingdom has indoor attractions like PhilharMagic and Enchanted Tales with Belle. In Epcot, indoor options like Living with the Land and The Three Caballeros boat ride are recommended. In Hollywood Studios, the light show at night is beautiful as is Toy Story Midway Mania. We also share our favorite cooling gear for staying comfortable and suggest using handheld fans, lightweight, rechargeable fans, and cooling neck gaiters. We also caution listeners against spending too much on overpriced cooling towels and suggest using a bandana or wet ball cap. Additionally, we share fun facts about the Disney parks, including some history and trivia. We also discuss some of our favorite pools and water attractions in Walt Disney World, including Stormalong Bay and the Big Blue Pool. We even suggest finding rest and respite at pool bars and sit-down meals on the hot days. We emphasize the importance of staying on-site to quickly return to the resort and avoiding traveling off-property during peak season. For those looking to relax and avoid the heat on Florida's hottest summer days, some tips include arranging for preferred parking or utilizing the Skyliner. We also recommend indulging in some treats like Dole Whip or a citrus swirl, and drinks from Trader Sam's, and the pool bars at Riviera and Nomad Lounge. We also discuss an upcoming Indiana Jones movie and share some alternative options for cooling down, taking a humorous note in the popular song and making a funny joke. We close the show with some recommendations for staying hydrated while visiting theme parks and for avoiding heat stroke and dehydration. We suggest bringing water bottles or simply asking for water at quick serve counters. We also discuss drinking electrolyte beverages like Powerade or smart water for salt replenishment. And we remind our listeners that it's important to stay cool and not party too hard during the hot Florida summers, and to take breaks when necessary. So go out there, follow these tips and have a great time at Walt Disney World!     As always, a huge thank you to our sponsor, Key to the World Travel. Disney World Hotel Tour: Coronado Springs This week, we invite you to join us on a captivating tour of Disney's Coronado Springs Resort, a remarkable Moderate level resort located within the enchanting Walt Disney World Resort. We'll be showcasing all the compelling reasons why this resort should be your top choice for your next magical stay.Check out our video tour of the resort hosted by travel host extraordinaire Cam Matthews here . First and foremost, let's explore the captivating theme and aesthetic of Disney's Coronado Springs. This original resort draws inspiration from the alluring ambiance of Spanish colonial Mexico and the American Southwest. As we venture further, you'll discover that the guest rooms are situated in three distinct areas known as Casitas, Ranchos, and Cabanas. The Casitas offer luxurious suites, making Coronado and Gran Destino Tower the only moderate resorts at Walt Disney World with such accommodations. Throughout the common areas and guest rooms, the vibrant presence of the beloved characters from "The Three Caballeros" is skillfully woven into the decor, adding an extra touch of whimsy and charm. Next, we'll delve into the magnificent Gran Destino Tower, which opened its doors in 2019. This stunning 15-story tower takes inspiration from the themes and visual aesthetics of the renowned Disney animation short film, "Destino." Originally a collaboration between Walt Disney and Salvador Dali, the film remained unfinished until 2003. The Gran Destino Tower pays homage to this artistic masterpiece, offering guests a truly immersive experience filled with elegance and sophistication. As we satisfy our appetites, we'll explore the delightful dining options available at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort. The main dining venue, Coronado Springs, boasts a variety of culinary experiences, including Rix Sports Bar & Grill, Maya Grill, El Mercado de Coronado, and Cafe Rix. If you're looking for a unique dining experience, we recommend checking out Three Bridges Bar & Grill, Siestas Cantina (a charming poolside bar), and Laguna Bar, a picturesque outdoor lakeside bar. Additionally, the Gran Destino area offers Toledo, an exquisite dining destination specializing in tapas, steak, and seafood. For a more relaxed atmosphere, you can unwind at Dahlia Lounge or indulge in specialty gin drinks and Spanish-inspired appetizers at Barcelona Lounge, which also serves as an espresso bar and quick-service breakfast spot in the mornings. Of course, no trip to Disney's Coronado Springs Resort would be complete without exploring its remarkable recreational facilities. The Dig Site pool complex steals the spotlight, featuring the captivating Lost City of Cibola pool with a thrilling 123-foot waterslide—the longest on Walt Disney World property. Additionally, you'll find the largest hot tub on the property, capable of accommodating up to 22 adults, a kiddie pool, Siestas pool bar, sand volleyball court, the exciting Iguana Arcade, and the fun-filled Dig Site playground. For those seeking a more tranquil experience, the resort offers three serene quiet pools, each located in the distinct "settlement" areas of Coronado Springs. Throughout your stay, immerse yourself in the vibrant Colors of Coronado and admire the intricate Spanish Mosaic Art experiences that add an extra layer of cultural beauty to the resort. Both sections of the resort feature fitness centers to help you maintain your active lifestyle. You'll still find an array of engaging recreational activities to enjoy, including a daily campfire, nightly movies under the stars on the Gran Destino Lawn, invigorating pool parties, thrilling games, and a refreshing jogging trail for those seeking a scenic workout.   As always, a huge thank you to our sponsor, Key to the World Travel.   Favorite Disney World Restaurants 2023   Now that dining plans are back at Walt Disney World, it’s time to start planning all the tasted meals you’re going to use those dining credits on in 2024! We’re kicking off a summer of Disney Dining this week with a look at some of our favorite under rated quick service and table service restaurants around Walt Disney World, as well as the spots we think are totally over rated, and not worth spending your precious meal credits on.  We also want to share with you a couple new/newly updated spots that we really think you should check out next time you visit Walt Disney World.    Topics of discussion include: Should we give Be Our Guest another chance? Magic Kingdom dining could use some help. Always eat at the Jungle Navigation Co. Skipper Canteen! EPCOT is dining heaven, at least as long as you stay in World Showcase. Hollywood Studios doesn’t seem like it has a lot of great dining, but we actually had a long list of spots we like there.  Animal Kingdom has tons of hidden gems, especially if you like Asian food or barbecue.  Disney Springs has too many options to count, but a ton of them are great! Don’t pass on House of Blues, and check out the takeout window versions of some of the nicer table service locations.  We didn’t have enough time to dig into the dining options at the resort hotels, but Heather and Jeff recently tried a few new/updated spots they wanted to recommend. The updated menu at Narcoosee’s at the Grand Floridian has elevated the restaurant from “meh” to “must try”! Rosa Mexicana at the Dolphin is elevated Mexican food that is more than worth the trip to sample. Amare at the new Swan Reserve tower is a fantastic spot for some fine Mediterranean style dining.  We have a long list of places we still need to eat at! Keep an eye out for more culinary adventures this summer.    As always, a huge thank you to our sponsor, Key to the World Travel. Disney World Moderate Resorts, But “Plus” It Last week, we started talking about how to “plus” your stay at a Walt Disney World Deluxe Resort. Plussing is a term used by Disney to mean taking something great, and making it even more betterer.  This week, we’re going to continue the conversation and up the challenge a little bit. Let’s look at a Moderate level resort, and talk about about ways you plus your vacation to make it feel a little more Deluxe, while staying within a more “middle of the road” budget.  Conversation topics include: Hotels- which Moderate hotels give the most “deluxe feeling” stay, or a little more bang for your buck as far as luxury, amenities, and activities? How to to plus the hotel stay- upgraded room categories, activities outside the theme parks you can book that fit within a more moderate budget, great restaurants that fit a moderate budget but still deliver Experiences inside the theme parks- less expensive tours, other special experiences, splurge on Individual Lightning Lane attractions, etc.   As always, a huge thank you to our sponsor, Key to the World Travel.
